CONSTANTINE Will Face 'Papa Midnite' In New TV Series

Bleeding Cool have released a few more details on the upcoming Constantine tv show, and in doing so reveal that the first "villain" to face our foul mouthed occultist will be none other than Papa Midnite. They also reckon the series will be set in New York! Read on for more..

We know Welsh actor Matt Ryan will play John Constantine in the Fox pilot, and now thanks to Bleeding Cool we also know who he'll be going up against.

"Introduced in the pilot, with a subplot providing him a kind of origin, is the character of Papa Midnite. As the series runs on, we’ll see Midnite and Constantine facing off again and again, as the stakes get higher and higher."

This immortal voodoo priest/organized criminal began as a foe to John in the Hellblazer comics, but later on they found themselves teaming up to battle bigger threats to the world..so we can probably expect the show to follow suit. Midnite was played by Djimon Hounsou in the 2005 Constantine movie.

In addition, the site report that the pilot (and presumably the entire show if indeed it's picked up) is to be set in New York, with scenes being set in the Ravenscar Psychiatric Hospital - a location which should be familiar to Hellblazer readers. What do you guys make of this? Any casting suggestions for Midnite?

@KingGhost519

That might be an issue if Papa Midnite had actually been cast and since he hasn't and there is no announcement of what race they're looking for what you're saying has absolutely nothing to do with this.

What are you talking about? Nothing about this article or the original article suggests in the slightest that they are changing his race

Djimon Honsou was my favorite part of the Constantine movie. He was awesome. This just adds 100 cool points to this show. I may not be a DC guy, but I'm gonna check this one out for sure.

Whoops I read that wrong. Sorry about that. I thought it said Matt Ryan was gonna be playing Midnite. I was reading too fast. Please forgive me.

@GliderMan: he is a con man born from a working class family that dabbles in magic and stuff, caused a REALLY ugly incident (seriously, when I read it gave me nightmares) with black magic when he was in a punk rock band made of young occultists like himself that in the long run got all of his friends from the band killed and him locked up in an asylum for the criminally insane for a few years.
In the first number of the old Vertigo series (Hellblazer) we see him persecuted by the ghosts of his friends from the band and trying to save the last surviving member, from there things get from bad to worse.

GliderMan, he doesn't! This ain't a standard superhero story. I'd say at best he's an antihero. Now DC did soften him a bit when they cancelled his Vertigo series Hellblazer and brought him into the main PG13 roster, but he was originally quite a piece of shit at times.

Derek Luke for Midnite looks wise ...whether he can pull off the accent? possibly.

I'm not really familiar with the character, but I'm interested in checking out the show.

He sounds important to Constantine's story.

@McGee LOL! I remember that guy.

"Set in NY"?... Man, why the hell can't they film it in London,w here the character belongs?? I know, he has been in the US a few times (one of the very earliest comics, I'd say Hellblazer #3 or something like that, takes place in America), but still...

But well, at least they respect the comics by having Papa Midnite in NY, where Joh first meets him in the comics, rather than using some other character that belongs in the UK.

So I take it that Swamp Thing won't show up now. He could be in New York but I highly doubt he will be too. So then if NBC licensed the character and only has the rights to Constantine then Justice League Dark the movie can't happen. Hopefully NBC doesn't have the exclusive rights so JLD can come out some day. I am most likely the only one but I would prefer to see a JLD movie over the JL movie.

Djimon was a perfect Papa Midnite in the Constantine movie. He was one of my favorite things about that movie. I really want this show to do well and not screw up the characters with a watered down John Constantine, but only time will tell. Still, I really want a Constantine movie that follows the source material more closely than the previous film. I guess I am alone in that, but a Hellblazer movie is long overdue in my opinion. I would think this series would have to be on a premium cable channel to really do Constantine justice, only because I can't see NBC going into the very dark territory Hellblazer sometimes went. However, since that isn't happening, I really want this show to take risks and turn out good.
