CONFIRMED: No Major Marvel Studios Hall H Appearance At San Diego Comic Con This Year!

We already know that The Dark Knight Rises and Superman: Man of Steel will be absent from SDCC, but now Marvel Studios have confirmed that they also won't have a major presence this year!

It was already rumoured that Marvel Studios (along with several other major studios) would be scaling back their presence at the annual event due to the expense and lack of benefits their appearance generates. Now, we have confirmation that Marvel Studios definitely don't have anything major planned for SDCC '11, meaning we can pretty much rule out seeing The Avengers once again assemble on stage in Hall H! Here is an excerpt from the report over at Hero Complex.

Don’t expect the Avengers to reassemble in Hall H at Comic-Con International in July.

The official word from Marvel Studios is that their team will sit out the Hollywood previews in the 6,000-seat hall, where fans, bloggers and journalists from around the world come to see filmmakers and stars introduce and promote their upcoming spectacle movies.

The leadership at Marvel Studios is also quick to point out that sitting out Hall H is not synonymous with sitting out Comic-Con, which runs July 21-24; the studio will have a major presence on the convention showroom floor (one Marvel source cryptically said that the booth plan will be as attention-grabbing as last year’s Hall H panel), and there’s talk of a promotional event beyond the walls of the San Diego Convention Center, which might suggest a 'Captain America: The First Avenger' promotion, premiere or special screenings.

And what of Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment? Well, as we reported a few weeks ago, they also will not have a major presence at the upcoming event in San Diego.

"Go big or stay home," is how one Marvel insider put it, and that logic is seemingly embraced by rival Warner Bros. with 'Man of Steel,' the 2012 feature-film revival of Superman that is conspicuously absent (at least at this point) from the Hall H program. 'The Dark Knight Rises,' Warner’s follow-up to its billion-dollar Batman film in 2009, is also M.I.A., but Gotham City filmmaker Christopher Nolan has never set foot in Hall H so this latest absence may add to his mystique, but it won’t shock anyone.

Well, I think it's fair to say that this is pretty bad news for both the event and us fans. If major studios like Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. are pulling out, it won't be long until the rest follow suit. (many already have, including Disney) How this will impact the Hollywood presence at other Cons is something else to worry about, but be sure to share your thoughts on this news in the usual place!

With an all star cast which includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Rufallo as Bruce Banner, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Tom Hiddleston as Loki, The Avengers is set to be released on May 4, 2012!

Its because the comic con crowd are the people who were going to go see Avengers from the moment they knew Sam Jackson had been cast as Mr Fury.

It makes more sense to spend the money on marketing to the people who arent already huge comic book fans where the real money comes from. Plus by the time comic con comes around in July both TDKR and the avengers are going to be well into filming and it would be ridiculous to fly back to sit infront of people who you can already guarantee the money of for an hour showing a few minutes of footage. It might seem like a shame but it makes perfect sense.

it doesnt matter. DC can throw everything they have at Marvel and it wont do anything. the only movies DC puts out is Superman, Batman, and recently Green Lantern. 3 major titles.

what's Marvel got? Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, X-Men, Spider-Man, Daredevil, THE AVENGERS!!!!!

no competition. at all.

Good find Josh. This makes perfect sense. Why throw tons of money at promoting something to people who are already going to see it? It's the general public that these films need to be sold to, not the fans.

Having said that, I'm sure this will piss off SDCC ticket holders.

Just cause Marvel isn't going to be in Hall H doesn't mean we wont see anything cool from marvel like it says above "one Marvel source cryptically said that the booth plan will be as attention-grabbing as last year’s Hall H panel" so I'm still keeping my hopes up

Comic Con was VERY crowded last year. I could write the word "very" 100 times and that wouldn't cover it. I went to many Comic Con's, stopped for 3 years due to my daughter's birth, and then went back in 2010. It was ridiculously full, so much so that I'm not heading back this year.............so while this is sad news as major movie events for comic fans are fantastic once-in-a-lifetime experiences at shows.................. I was there when Bryan Singer premiered a true, fully cut trailer for X2.........I can see how return vs. investment is not feasible.

i mean, to see the Avengers on stage was mind-blowing, but what were the logistics / costs to make that happen??? and WB just got embarrassed by their lack of support for GL, when compared to what Marvel had for Thor and Cap, from the Hall H presence to Odin's throne and various key props at the Marvel booth.

my guess is that companies are evolving their Marketing strategies for CBM film promotion, and the days of Comic Con being way more than a comic show may be.....to a degree.......slowly passing.

Hell, it's all about the comics anyway, isn't it?

and Hawksblueyes? fine point. They are preaching to the converted, from a certain point of view.

Yeah Comic Con used to be about the fans connecting with the writers, artists and editors of COMICS now it's just a big bloated, obese spectacle for Hollywood. When was the last time they actually talked about comic books. I'm glad I'm not attending.

This is a good thing. I hope more and more Hollywood studios pull out and the casual fans disappear with them, thus leaving the San Diego COMIC con for the COMIC fans.

@Arminies Marvel Studios didn't really have much at NYCC last year anyway, it was all about NYAF and that silly Michael Jackson dance game....

.... I hear the AF will be reduced this year though, and since it's 4 days long this time, we may get some good stuff....

To be honest this is also good because in order to get into Hall H on Saturday you basically have to be in line by 5 am. I spent last years Comic-con Saturday in Hall H and I pretty much missed everything else. I'll be there again this year so I'm ok with this.

I wonder if Marvel will move their presentations to the Disney D23 Expo in August. The event promises: "The Walt Disney Studios will give fans a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse at the exciting roster of project on the horizon. From exclusive video clips and live performances to filmmaker discussions and star appearances, audiences will be treated to an up-close look at select movies from the Studio's upcoming film slate."

I know they usually wrangle Johnny Depp and others for it. It's a massively pro-Disney crowd, without any competition from other studios and their projects. Now that all future Marvel Studios projects are going to be entirely Disney releases, I'm sure they'd love to have any news premiere at their own conventions.

@NateHawk 89

It's not Marvel vs DC,it's Marvel studios,FOX and Sony vs Warner Bros.The only reason
you can list all those Marvel films is because Marvel gave away the film rights to it's top franchises(Spider-Man,X-Men,Fantastic Four,Daredevil,The Punisher and at one time The Hulk and Blade,because they were broke.WB has only given out the rights to RED, which was a hit at Summit pictures.

@Intruder

Good chance for most of your Marvel Studios wishes to come true, except for the FF rights going back to Marvel.It would be a bomb shell if they did,but FOX has made it clear they intend to keep the rights even if it means making a straight to video FF film.There's just too much potential for the FF to be a truly cosmic Marvel franchise for FOX to give the rights back.But,maybe Disney can break out the check book and make a deal for Marvel Studios to make the FF while FOX can still distribute the film for a big fee.

I'm a gigantic Marvel fan and I couldn't be more sad about this news. I've been to Comic-Con twice before and it's been amazing. I haven't been in a while and I finally have the ability to go again and it will be the first year that I bring my wife and perhaps the last time I'll get the chance to attend. The hands down most exciting part of this event for me was the Marvel presentation. I love everything about what they've done with the MCU movies and have been ecstatic about The Avengers coming out since they announced it right after Iron Man came out. So I've been waiting three years for this and now am sorely disappointed and am having trouble being excited about this event at all. I understand the reasons everyone's giving for this but let me tell you why I think they're bull: the extravagant showings and special information that's given that attendees are the first to hear and the things that are shown to them before anyone else are not completely about promotion - they're about showing appreciation to the fans. They're about celebrating the things that we all (as nerds) get immensely excited about and rewarding the fans that made huge plans to be in that place at that time to do and see things that are not easy to make happen. For a lot of people it takes huge amounts of work and compromise to be able to make it to this event. This sense of celebration and appreciation is how I have often viewed these types of showings and it makes me very sad to think that's apparently not the case. I feel sick to my stomach

@blkyank- Marvel signed crap deals for X-men and Spider-man because they had to in order to prove to Hollywood that comics were properties that could make money. However, the rest of their deals were with much better terms for Marvel. I'm sure Fox can't whip out straight-to-video FF films in order to keep the rights. The Hulk reverted back to Marvel fairly quickly. Daredevil's rights were extended by a theatrical Electra film, but are about to be up again (hence the reboot talk.) Ghost Rider 2 is in production right now solely to keep the rights, but they couldn't skimp on it.

I agree that Fox won't risk the FF rights going back to Disney and seeing them make a hit out of it... but I'm sure there are agreements in the contract that state how they have to go about developing a project in order to extend the rights, how wide of a theatrical release it must have, and how much time they can take between projects. The Roger Corman FF deal surely taught them that much.

Truth is, I've never been, and when I do somehow go to SDCC, I'm going only for the exclusive swag...and the comics. That's it. I think most of these studios pulling out is a good thing. Maybe it's time the con went back to its roots.
