Hollywood is Going Crazy for 3-D!

Avatar has apparently convinced studios that 3-D is the only way to go for box office success. Next up, Jon Favreau's Cowboys and Aliens. . .

We've known for awhile that both Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. have shown interest to respectively direct and star in the comic adaptation Cowboys and Aliens; a story that unites Wild West gunslingers and Native Americans against an invading alien force. The Daily Beast has just revealed some insight that not only is Favreau attached to direct, but the film might be his first foray into the 3-D movie making realm.

Cowboys and Aliens, a Dreamworks project, is also supposedly set to start production this July for a release date sometime in 2011. Bad news for fans hoping to see Iron Man 3 any time soon.

Though these rumors have yet to be confirmed by the studio, Dreamworks' CEO Stacey Snider had this to say: “There’s no doubt that people all through the industry over the holidays were thinking, ‘Should we do this movie in 3-D? Is this worthy?’”

“For us, it isn’t about genre or demographic but more about the scope of the world that you’re creating,” Snider went on.

The 3-D epidemic is definitely sweeping Hollywood faster than Swine Flu. Director Ridley Scott supposedly wanted Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe, to be in 3-D. Unfortunately, Scott had the idea too late in the game since principal photography was already wrapping up. A Hollywood executive unrelated to the project stated that if Universal, the studio behind Robin Hood, had decided to convert a mid-production film into 3-D it could add an estimated minimum of $50 million to the budget.

Mr. Scott isn't the only A-list director to be bitten by the 3-D bug. Steven Spielberg's next project is The Adventures of Tintin, based on the long running comic series. The film will utilize both 3-D and motion capture to bring the story of a young reporter and his amalgam of odd friends to life.

It's pretty apparent that a comic adaptation like Cowboys and Aliens is just the type of film to benefit from the 3-D treatment; but we should hope studios won't be spending more effort on glittery effects while forsaking solid scripts and quality casting.

I really don't want all of these movies in 3d. Its a nice gimmick, it worked for Avatar but it won't necessarily work for everything. Robin Hood in 3d? Do we really need to see that? A few arrows coming at us? I get that its not just about that, and it does look nice..I just don't want iy to completely take over. I guess, they will always give us the option anyway though...ah [frick] it, do what you like yis [frick]ers!

Yeah, Robin Hood in 3d would be way to gimmicky for me. But the news about Aliens and Cowboys doesn't surprise me as favreau was all about the 3D technology when Cameron showed it to the Hollywood big wigs over the summer.

3D gives people a reason to go to the movie theater. It will continue to become more of a big driver for movie studios, until people can recreate it in their homes.

If 3D is the future I'm staying in the past
and never watch another new movie again!
I know I'm a dinosaur but this is ridiculous!

For those of you who think 3D is ridiculous,
they've already developed 3D that does not require the use of glasses. Without delving into the science and engineering of it, it is hella expensive and will become mainstream in about 5 to 10 years. You will be able to get the 3D experience without the glasses.

For example, there is a TV that has autostereoscopic capabilities, but it costs a quarter of a million. Only the elite can afford it, and frankly I'm happy that people are willing to give old ideas new chances and push the medium that much further. Those who aren't with the idea will eventually be on board once autostereocopic tech is in the theatres.

I watched an interview on G4 with Cameron. He was talking about 3D being the future inso far as within the next couple of years our televisions will all be 3D. He said they have them already but they are very expensive.
He sees them as taking the place of high def within the next ten years.
He also said he doesn't plan on shooting any more movies without them being 3D.

OMG 3D is the future and story will fall. Very concerning. But I trust Jon Fav and Tony Stark so im ok with them goin 3D. Avatar was great!

im not surprised really, 3d is a flashing cash sign but i agree to much 3d and not enough quality will have us all tearing our hair out.

3D doesn't scare me. It seems gimmicky, because of the way it was handled in the past. But it is the future of the cinema experience. More 3D being casually introduced into the movie watching experience will have an effect likened to switching from Xbox 360 to a Sega Genesis. Don't laugh. But someday even Rom-coms will be 3D because it'll be expected for all movies. Its the future. You're kids will say, "ewww...that's an 'old' 2D movie! I don't want to watch it. It's so boring. I don't care that its Star Wars (or LOTR, IM, TDK)."
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 1/5/2010, 8:12 PM
Phinehas: Exactly, it will be like going from VHS to DVD. The gimmicks will be gone and all you will have left is fantastic depth and picture quality.

Gabe@ If they perfect 3D without glasses and to where its
affordable to the average person and its used subtly
then I'm all for it! But they still need to write a good
original story and a good script and good character
development and exposition. I just don't like 3D being
over-used and throwing out good writing and using FX
to cover the bad writing and dialog!

I'm not saying Avatar is sh!t 'cause its not! I just don't
like directors relying too much on it to cover-up
redundant derivative story-writing and dialog!
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 1/5/2010, 8:16 PM
DDD: Won't it be cool though when its all 3D? Screw the movies, can you imagine sports? Football, baseball, racing, porn, it will be awsome!!
Phinehas
Phinehas - 1/5/2010, 8:19 PM
DDD, they do that anyway with FX, action, or campy formulaic drivel. And they'll do it with 3D too. Smart people like yourself will see through it. Its inevitable. Avatar is a nice pile of gift wrapped crap, though.
RedDevil
RedDevil - 1/5/2010, 8:26 PM
Avatar is great mainly because of its graphics and the story is something that you will be like wow that was pretty cool in the next day, then later it will be easily forgotten. I like Avatar because it was a fun treat to watch for the Holiday but can be forgetable.

3D was big in the 50's and had a resurgence in the 80's. It was thought to be the future thing both times. For me, it is too gimmicky for most films, like others have mentioned. There may be a handful of films that it works with.
DDD
DDD - 1/5/2010, 8:35 PM
Phineas,@ Yep, Avatar is gift-wrapped
and kind of a stale plot but Cameron
always comes through on FX! He's the FX
King!!! So Avatar is worth watching but
I unfortunately will have to watch it
on regular DVD 'cause the 3D glasses do
something funny with my eye balls!

Oh, well, I guess I'm just a big mutant,
I just wish my mutations came with some
cool powers! lol

My brother told me today that one of the TV
networks is going to start broadcasting
college basketball games in 3D. He didn't
remember which network it was. So I guess
the future with 3D is crashing in on me
whether I like it or not!

Phinehas - 1/5/2010, 8:37 PM
While this is true Ranger14, the ability and the technology has jumped leaps and bounds in the last 60 and 30 years. If you can feel like you're in the environment of what you're watching it will enhance the movie all the more unlike how it did then! Seriously, even the glasses don't have the blue and red film on them anymore.

DDD, the home version of 3D still sucks! LOL I think a special projector is needed. Then again, maybe you're like Nada on "They Live"!!!

LOL @ Tyler. Well it may as well be if everything else is converting, don't you think?
And porn could keep all the gimmicks, that would be OK.

Honestly I applaud the change of pace. Regardless if it looks like a fad its a new way to experience movies more intimately. Avatar was the best movie experience of my life. And I am a movie person. So thats not something small. It may seem cheesy right now because you have to wear funny glasses but think ahead. Dont be so narrow minded. The future will hold new technology based off what we prefer now. It looks like we are headed in this direction naturally even if people will doubt its relevance.

i dont know what all the hate for 3D is about. it isn't the same as 3D was 20 years ago. it looks a LOT different. it isn't just things flying at you anymore, now it actually looks like you can get up and walk into the movie, it gives EVERYTHING depth.

as long as directors don't try to make movies specifically for 3D (like making every scene with shit flying at the screen), i don't see the problem, you always have the choice to see it normal.

I used to be dead against 3d, haing never seen one that worked. However, I recently went to Universal Studios and saw they're Shrek thing and I have to say I was very impressed. With that said, there remains a time and place for 3d and pimping it out to all these movies is right out of the blunder box!

Shaman is right once more! Animation and porn!

Ron Burgundy doesn't need 3d, this 'stash can jump out and grab you with just 2 dimensions to play with!

Good movie-making doesn't need 3D to cover
up the bad writing/directing/acting!!!

I hate live 3D!

Cowboys and Aliens?

Isn't this pretty much AVATAR all over again?

I wonder how many people in the early 1920's were like "God, sound in film? It's a nice novelty but it won't last. I didn't come here to see a bunch of people talking!" HAhahhahahhah
