James Gunn Is Expected To Share Official DCU Updates Tomorrow - But What Will Be Announced?

Though nothing has been made official, James Gunn is expected to share a few updates on his plans for the DCU at some point tomorrow. Will a full slate be announced? Here's what we've heard...

James Gunn has previously indicated that fans would finally learn more about his and fellow DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran's plans for the DCU before the end of January, and tomorrow is the 31st!

The Suicide Squad director dropped a big hint that announcements would be coming at some point on Tuesday via a Twitter interaction yesterday evening, and we now have a few updates to share.

From what we can gather, a press event is being held (or already has) tonight to give the major trades a heads-up about what's coming tomorrow. This could suggest that the details will be shared in separate reports throughout the day, but what exactly can we expect?

Well, probably not very much!

While Gunn and Safran have been busy making plans for the past few months, we'd be very surprised if a full slate was ready to be unveiled. Though nobody knows for sure what's on the agenda, several insiders believe just a few projects will be announced, and we should also get official confirmation about the status of the "old guard" as the new DCU begins to stake shape (although Dave Bautista seemingly let the cat out of the bag a little early).

This is mostly just speculation and our best guess based on what we've heard from several sources (we're not even certain that an announcement is coming tomorrow), but we should know more very soon.

In the meantime, let us know what you think/hope will be announced in the comments down below.

I hope he has room for the Legion of Super-Heroes and Freedom Fighters somewhere in this universe.

@blackandyellow - Or to the Infinitors of Infinity Inc.

If there are not deep-dive obscure characters getting their due now then it'll be more of the same thing.

@blackandyellow - Legion is a must! It has that young adult appeal with the relationships. And plenty of classic superhero action with plenty of room for comedy and horror. Tons of potential spin-offs as well such as:
The Subs,
The Wanderers
L.E.G.I.O.N.

I Doubt they'd give us Freedom Fighters before the JSA though.

James Gunn can't announce to much until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is released in May. 2023 in my opinion.

I think a full reboot makes sense, using The Batman as the launchpad makes sense as well as he doesn’t seem keen on multiple iterations of the same character.

@Relativity - A full reboot makes sense, but using The Batman as a launching point does not.

@Relativity - Zaslav said something about not wanting four different Batmans out there. I am believe two will happen, Reeves’ and the shared universe Batman.

@TheUnworthyThor - In a way it will be a repeat of Nolan’s trilogy which could have been used as a launchpad but then we had a false start with GL then another start with MOS, they should try and be cohesive this time.

@Relativity - I think they’ve made it clear that they are okay with two Batmans. Besides trying to fit aliens and magic into the world of The Batman would ruin what they created with The Batman. They can create basically a new trilogy to stand next to Nolan’s while also creating a shared universe with their own Batman. They can have their cake and eat it too.

@Godzilla2000Zer - What about titles? I'm betting on "Superman", "Wonder Woman Returns", "Green Lantern Corps", and "Lobo", nice and simple. What say you?

Godzilla2000Zer - 1/30/2023, 6:52 PM
@TUD - I think it's a little early for any official titles since none besides Superman are currently being scripted that we know of. Simple is best I agree

@Godzilla2000Zer - Woohoo! I will say though, I think Superman Legacy is a bit generic/cliche-sounding. It's a nitpck, but I would rather have just "Superman".

@TUD - Yeah kinda wondering how a younger Superman is gonna already have a legacy but I like the title I do thing they need to add Batman to Brave and The Bold to make it clear it's a Batman movie.

Not too many expectations, literally. Maybe a thing or two will catch my attention but I am going with zero anticipation.

If they reveal that from now on there aren't gonna be anymore unnecessary cancellations of DC projects such as last week with Doom Patrol, Titans or like especially Batgirl as they work on buidling Zaslav's cash cow cinematic universe I'll be good.

Two predictions: the official title for the Superman movie set in Metropolis and some Harley Quinn project because DC now all of a sudden adores this former murderous jester. Maybe she'll get her own TV show starring Margot Robbie which if she does will confirm Gunn and Safran are cherry picking.
