Netflix Appears To Officially Be Joining The Scramble To Buy Warner Bros. Discovery

After months of rumors and vague responses from Netflix executives, it’s now confirmed that Netflix has hired a consultant to evaluate the possibility of acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery.

After months of speculation, it's become increasingly evident that another studio might actually purchase Warner Bros. Discovery as soon as next year. The only thing we don't know is who it will be.

Several weeks ago, a few self-proclaimed experts wrongly asserted this could never happen (even though it was painfully clear that preparations were in the works), but several reports have emerged since and it's hard to ignore the fact that Warner Bros. Discovery's financial status isn't great right now, even if its 2025 theatrical run was a big success.

WBD is planning an early to mid-2026  restructuring that would see the company split in two- one company would contain its studio and streaming assets (HBO, Max, Warner Bros. Television & Motion Pictures, and DC Studios) and the other company would house its linear/cable networks (CNN, TNT, Discovery, etc.).

Current WBD CEO David Zaslav appears to be keenly-focused on erasing the $30–$40 billion in debt created by the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger back in 2022.

The newly created and Larry Ellison-backed marriage of Paramount and Skydance made an offer back in October to the tune of roughly $49.64 billion ($20/share), which was rejected by Zaslav. Paramount Skydance more recently made a second offer of $24/share, which was also rejected.

In a press statement officially confirming that WBD would be fielding offers,  Zaslav remarked, "It’s no surprise that the significant value of our portfolio is receiving increased recognition by others in the market. After receiving interest from multiple parties, we have initiated a comprehensive review of strategic alternatives to identify the best path forward to unlock the full value of our assets.”

Samuel A. Di Piazza, Jr., Chair of the Warner Bros. Discovery Board of Directors added, "Our decision to initiate this review underscores the Board’s commitment to considering all opportunities to determine the best value for our shareholders. We continue to believe that our planned separation to create two distinct, leading media companies will create compelling value. That said, we determined taking these actions to broaden our scope is in the best interest of shareholders."

Now, reports have come in that Netflix has hired the same consulting firm, the financial advisors of Moelis & Co, who just recently provided similar services to Skydance on its acquisition of Paramount.

As previously remarked, despite some successes over the years, Netflix has largely struggled to create its own stable of powerful IP, which logically dictates that the streamer should, at the very least, explore the idea of buying instead of building.

Other companies/studios said to be in the mix besides Netflix and Paramount Skydance are Apple, Comcast, and Amazon.

@Forthas - regardless of how anyone thinks about Gunn, that’s not going to happen. If Netflix would pay Zack Snyder hundreds of millions to make two Star Wars pornos I bet you they’d pay even more to have someone who’s movies actually make money.

@ElJefe - Whatever. Affleck is an n his fifties. Gal Gadot is largely regarded as a terrible actress and box office poison. Cavill likely has no interest. Mamoa is now Lobo… a role he was born to play. You wanna talk about Flash and Cyborg?

Give it a rest.

@Rpendo - Lol you’re fighting with yourself. I don’t disagree with your thoughts on Snyder, I’m just saying Netflix has plenty of money to put the Snyderverse together again. And those actors love ZS and if he called, who knows?

Rpendo
Rpendo - 11/1/2025, 7:19 PM
@ElJefe - Again, trying to rationalize netflix or any other company

1) getting the money together to pay an expensive—but-mediocre cast who have all aged out of their roles
2) giving money to the director of the cinematic triumphs that were the Rebel Moon saga
3) betting huge on a genre that is clearly not as popular as it was ten years ago
4) doubling down on failure

is ludicrous.

@Rpendo - Wrong. Netflix is mired in Obama's politics. And they don't watch their money and get robbed of many millions.

Zack Snyder loves such studios.
WEAPONXOXOXO
WEAPONXOXOXO - 11/1/2025, 10:04 AM
@PartyKiller - not a fan of Rebel Moon. I didn't even bother watching part 2. That being said. I think part 1 had over 100 million views in the first 6 months. So, just saying that for Netflix this was considered money well spent.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 11/1/2025, 10:39 AM
@Rpendo - If Netflix get WBD you'll only be seeing one DC film in select theaters every year or so. That'll be the end of the DC "Cinematic" Universe.
roboticJohnson
roboticJohnson - 11/1/2025, 10:46 AM
@WEAPONXOXOXO - I'm not sure about that, zack snyder tried to start the army of the dead universe and the rebel moon universe and we haven't heard anything about those 2 for a long time, they even cancelled the army of the dead animated series. It's kinda hard understanding how netflix sees snyder now imo

@ObserverIO - I disagree.

If a DC first lm released in theaters can break even at the box office budget-wise and then be a hit on streaming… huge win.

Thunderbolts lost like 30ish million at the box office, but sold a bunch on VOD and got into the black… and then hit big on streaming. Win.

Superman made a bit of money at the BO, and then sold a bunch of VOD, and then was a hit on streaming. Win.

FF made a bit of money at the BO, sold a bunch of VOD, etc etc…

This is the new formula.

Streamers constantly dump money into big budget movies that are only released on their streaming services, which make them no money directly. The he Electric State cost 300 million plus and didn’t generate a dime for Netflix. If they had released it in theaters and it grossed like 400 mil ww, it still would have been a loss, but they would have at least recouped some of the budget.

It isn’t 2011 anymore.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 11/1/2025, 8:14 PM
@Rpendo - The point is they won't even get released at all. Like Electric State wasn't released.

They only seem to release a movie in theaters (and even then a very limited release) if they think it's going to be a very strong awards contender.

So no more DC films in theaters. Maybe The Batman part II in select theaters only.

To my knowledge, everything from Netflix are exclusives and don’t go to iTunes/Apple TV to purchase so no thanks. For those thinking it’ll just go back to the Snyderverse, Netflix can still stick with Gunn. Netflix put a stop to the rebel moon universe bc of the budgets. If Snyderverse does come back, cool, but no guarantee for anything here 👍

Kinda interesting that Snyder has been posting DCEU pics lately when there were early rumors of Netflix being in the run for WBD. Those tapered off for a while but, now with this news?
If true, Snyder could be showing that he has extreme confidence in this happening with Netflix.

@ElJefe - I agree with you.

Honestly, he does this out of the small amount of relevance he can get. His stuff in Netflix, outside of his first zombie movie, has been bland at best.

He seriously needs to understand he's a great director of other people's writing. He completely sucks at writing himself.

Comcast/Universal should buy DC. It makes the most sense. Universal has been successful in crafting Box office juggernauts as well as smaller scaled horror stories with iconic characters thanks to it's partnership with Blumhouse. Can you imagine a Blumhouse Swamp Thing?

But not sure if the Government will let that happen as they would be at fault for monopolizing the media.

Disney might have the current funding to purchase WB.

And Disney has been failing upwards spectacularly all there content with no good direction.

If this was ever pulled off it would have been something the world has never seen and the sudio would forever be recognizd in the annals of history. Not to mention the shit ton of money they would be making.

LOL, even if Netflix landed the deal(highly doubt it). They’re not gonna give the keys to Zach Synder after the disaster deal with his Rebel Moon movies. After witnessing he couldn’t write and direct his way out of a paper bag, they’d hand the keys to DC to someone else who is a bit more competent.

It would be highly unlikely they would bring the Snyderverse back and even if they did it would still be shit
