Warner Bros. Closing Deal With Amazon To Develop New DC Animated Content

Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that they are in the process of closing a deal with Amazon to develop new DC-branded animated content for the Prime Video streaming service...

Recently-appointed DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran made it clear that the new DCU will incorporate movies, TV and animation, and we now have an update on their plans for the animated side of this connected universe.

While speaking at the U.K. TV conference in London (via Variety), Head of Warner Bros. Television Channing Dungey revealed that Warner Bros. TV and Amazon are in the process of closing a deal for new DC animated content.

"One of the interesting things that's exciting for me at this moment, the approach of the previous management was much more like 'Everything has to stay in house, we don't want anything to go outside,'" she said. "David Zaslav has been much more open to our exploring all of our animated IP and being able to do it on different platforms. Certainly, HBO Max is going to be our first stop but we're already in the process of closing a big deal with Amazon that's going to feature some of our DC-branded content in animation."

This is an interesting development, but it probably won't come as too much of a surprise to anyone who's been keeping up to date with the "strategic realignment" that's being implemented at WBD.

Last month, Warner Bros. Television underwent a major restructure, laying off 19% of its workforce across the scripted, unscripted and animation divisions. Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios’ development and production teams were merged, and there was an indication that they might be looking to outsource animation to third parties.

We have no idea what this new animated content will focus on, but fans will be hoping for a shift away from the likes of Superman and Batman in order to give some lesser-known characters the spotlight.

Zaslav selling animation to make a few bucks😕...

Why not keep it on your streaming service?

Zaslav needs extra money to produce 90 day fiance content😐....

Fail.

This is probably a smart move on WBs part. WB is trying to cut cost from producing content in house for HBOmax. So why not get paid to have someone else do it.

Makes sense, especially if it's part of the DC content not canon to the DCU.

Gunn hinted that a lot of content will be part of the DCU, so it makes sense to me to keep that on the same service. Outside of that, it doesn't need to be on the same one.

Not all non-MCU Marvel animated content is on Disney+, and that's no problem either.

Zaslav hates animation. The guy probably thinks only kids like animation 😐

What a weird thing to do😕

So to watch DC content not only I have to pay HBO max but also that amazon abomination??

And that same amazon that tarnished middle earth's lore??

@MaxPaint - Doesn't everyone have amazon prime? I'm not trying to come off as elitist or condescending, but Prime video comes with your prime subscription. Do people actually use Amazon without being a prime member, or do you just not use Amazon.

I'm genuinely curious.

I could see how this could make sense...if HBO Max wasn't still one of the most expensive streaming packages out there that is NOT a channel package service. They need a LOT of unique content to justify $10-$15 a month when they're competing with services that are $5 a month (or less annually), especially against those that naturally produce more unique content via broadcast network roots (Peacock, Paramount+, etc.).

@JosephCronos92 - So I asked someone else this question but I'll float it here too. I guess I'm crazy because I thought pretty much everyone had a prime account. I did and then they started producing content and it was just an added bonus.

Aside from HBOMAX don’t they slow own a little channel called Cartoon Network? Between the 3, Max, CN and DC there should be synergy.

I get that they’re tight on money and I’m sure Amazon lured them with big bucks, but it waters down the brand when you spread it out too much

Plus it only seems logical that if they produced quality animated shows on own of their own networks it would benefit fit them more as they retain complete control over all aspects of the ip’s.

Last thing we need is DC getting into a Sony Universal type deal that hinders them from really putting out the best content possible.

DC is always making the wrong moves.
