We had been assured that Hugh Jackman would be hanging up the claws for good after James Mangold's Logan, so it was a huge surprise when we learned that the actor planned to come out of retirement for a team-up with Ryan Reynolds' Merc With a Mouth in Deadpool 3.
Though nothing has been confirmed, Wolvie and Wade are expected to find themselves (trapped?) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (possibly facilitated by Loki's TVA), which begs the question: will Jackman remain on board as the MCU's version of the fan-favorite mutant, or will his return be a "one and done?"
Jackman was asked that very question during his interview with the Empire Podcast, and while his response was non-committal, it certainly sounds like he'd be open to the possibility of sticking around.
"I imagine every movie as a one and done, that's how I see it," he said. "I'll be honest, I had a two picture deal at the beginning, but I still assumed it was a one and done. You know, back then there were no comic book movies, so I just take it one at a time. I’m lucky that way, I don't have to think beyond that, but I think it's the best way to go."
Jackman also teased the dynamic between Deadpool and Wolverine, and it sounds like he'll get his wish for that 48 Hours-style love/hate (mostly hate) relationship!
"How do I categorize it? Ten being really close, zero being the reality, we're zero, we're opposites, hate each other. I'm just talking from my perspective, [Logan's] frustrated by him, wants to be a million miles away from him or wants to punch him in the head. Unfortunately, he can't be a million miles away from him in this movie, so I'm probably going to punch him in the head a lot."
We're sure they'll ultimately get on the same page (ol' Wade even managed to wear Cable down in Deadpool 2), but witnessing these guys butt heads beforehand promises to be a major selling point of the movie.
Deadpool 3 hits theaters on September 6, 2024.
