In 2018, Deadpool 2 was re-released in theaters over the holidays as Once Upon a Deadpool. A PG-13 version of the sequel, it featured a small Christmastime twist, and it was a spin on the movie Ryan Reynolds was clearly passionate about.
With that in mind, perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that the actor has a full-blown holiday adventure in mind for his Merc with the Mouth. During a recent interview with Big Issue, Reynolds revealed that he, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, teamed up to write a Deadpool Christmas movie that's never been made.
"I would love to see a song-and-dance number in a Deadpool movie," the actor said, talking about his new holiday movie Spirited. "Four years ago, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and I wrote a Christmas movie starring Deadpool. But it got lost in the shuffle of Disney acquiring Fox and it never got made."
"Maybe one day we’ll get to make that movie. It’s not a musical, but it’s a full Deadpool Christmas movie. So one day."
That sounds like a perfect Marvel Studios Special Presentation, though it appears the trio put together a movie here that would be worthy of a theatrical release. However, we can't imagine it would be too hard to pare it down a little and turn this idea into a 50-minute Disney+ special along the lines of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
Deadpool 3 will bring Wade Wilson into the MCU in a movie that will see him joined by Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. Rumour has it Owen Wilson's Mobius will also be part of proceedings, making us think those two will be heading on a journey through the Multiverse that ends with the Merc finding a new permanent home in the MCU.
This project becoming a reality will likely hinge on the upcoming threequel's success, though we anticipate that easily grossing over $1 billion a couple of years from now.
Deadpool 3 is set to be released on November 8, 2024.
