Rob Liefeld Speaks Out In-Depth How & Why Deadpool is being Mismanaged

Veteran comic creator Rob Liefeld now talks in an actual interview discussing the movie adaption for Deadpool aside from bashing 20th Century Fox via Twitter. Check it Out!

MTV News' Rick Marshall managed to score a Q&A session with Rob Liefeld, who notably created Marvel's "merc with a mouth" Deadpool. And last week, the veteran comic creator also infamously called out the studio currently managing the character's live-action Ryan Reynolds-starrer adaption, 20th Century Fox. Using this interview further bashing the studio, Liefeld speaks in-depth why he thinks we haven't seen any movement on the film lately, and why we should.

So... Rob... read any good blogs about what somebody said on Twitter lately?
[Lol] Well, what I believe is, if you're talking on Twitter, you're talking out loud — but sometimes you go, "Really? This is news?"

So let's get right to it. What's going on — or not going on — with "Deadpool" these days?
With the "Deadpool" film, it really boils down to to this: all the ingredients are there. What's the wait? I watch everything just like you do. You cover this business, and so do I as an interested party and a fan and somebody who has other films going. You look at development slates and what's going forward. You know how many people would kill to have Ryan Reynolds star in their movie?

You mentioned on Twitter that you'd read the "Deadpool" script and loved it...
You know what they say about "if it's not on the page, it's not on the screen"? Well, it's all there on the page. That script is brilliant. It doesn't need any adjusting, it doesn't need any vetting, it's just brilliant. It's like nothing else that's out there. Anyone who's read it knows that this is the comics film we've been waiting for. It has all the action, the violence, and the unexpected original set pieces that you haven't seen but want to see. It has character, it has heart, and it's laugh-out-loud funny. So you can't help asking, what's the holdup here? Is "Deadpool" not on the priority list? I really do not think they understand what they have here.

Is it because Deadpool was such an unknown commodity in the mainstream world before "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"? Why is there such a holdup?
"I go to the conventions and travel the country every year and I'm deluged with people dressed as Deadpool — people who are dying for this. These people have created such a phenomenon that Marvel has five or six "Deadpool" books a month. I want to say, "Hey Fox, last I counted, that's more than Spider-Man!"

It's not like I don't live in southern California and have management and agents in this town. It's not like I don't hear things around town. If it's an issue of Fox being cheap, what's that about? Open up the pocketbooks. Between a smaller budget and a bigger budget, they might want to go bigger budget — history will tell you that. They should spend what they need to get a director and lock down the star. They have Ryan Reynolds and Reese and Wernick, who if you haven't noticed, are tearing up the town. There's a reason everybody wants them. Fox has the script that everybody thinks is their best piece of work.

Well, it seems like you're not finding much argument with what you said on Twitter. People want this "Deadpool" movie to happen, and everyone seems to like Reynolds, Reese, and Wernick on it...
It's like this: If you have a voice and you do nothing with it, then you only have yourself to blame. I go to these conventions and my signature on a "Deadpool" book makes it go up an obscene amount of value, so I'm partially saddled with this situation, too. "Hey Liefeld, when's 'Deadpool' coming out?!" You know how often I'm asked that? But I don't have a green light on this...

I know the producers are awesome — the Donner people are great people. They have assembled a perfect storm, so let's go! Ryan Reynolds is amazingly bankable. Women love him, men love him. ... He has the Will Smith / Tom Cruise bankability, and you don't even need to ask him to star in the movie — he's already committed! He's a producer!

If you think things were heating up nicely, check out the full, second half of the interview over at MTV News, where Liefeld praises Ryan Reynolds and his commitment to the film and more. In the meantime, what do you think?

UGH!! This is torture! I just want this movie sooo baaaad!!!!

@DCMF cool find, dude!

@LEEE: I agree. Reynolds needs to let deadpool rest in the hands of another actor. I vote, go for an unknown. Let some new guy out there make his print.

ThreeBigTacos @ Then thats pretty awesome news thanx man! ; )

(But would Reynolds actually wear a mask all times?!?)

Damn, why couldn't Fox listen back when they made Origins lol?

kakinurmawth @ Exactly man, exactly, an unknown route would be the perfect way to go!

dp @ Of all ppl, you have to be one of the ones that wants this the most, being a diehard Deadpool fan!

ROR @ Lol, I'm cool with REYNOLDS but if he don't wear and keep the mask on he can [frick] off lol, same goes with DREDD!

Lucky to even get the chance after that Barakapool train wreck lol.

@ intruder

marvel should of set a release date that they wanted the film out by & then if it didn't make that date the film rights went back to marvel because fox couldn't deliver.

@ leee777

from the script i read,i think yeah make this film keep to the script & it'll be great. :D

but the way fox handles characters is shit,"deadpool" needs to r-rated like "wolverine".

if you make "deadpool" kiddy friendly & alter the source material too much,i'd rather it didn't get made.

when i saw what changes where made to the character in x-men origins wolverine made me want to cry man tears. :(

@LEEE what makes you think RR wont wanna wear the mask? Have you even read the script? Dude, stop putting such ridiculous words out there. RR is dedicated to this. Without him, you can just forget about the movie. read the script if you have those thoughts. It's awesome. Everything works. If you need it, i still have the file for ya.

@Deadpool 100% agree. R rating for both. Deadpool isnt kid friendly, and Wolvie isnt supposed to be kid friendly, so if they're "semi-rebooting" the wolvie movies, R rating all the way.

Lee & DP

I've said it before, but Disney distributed Marvel would not make a Deadpool movie you would think is fitting. If anyone is going to make it how you want it in regards to violence, sex, and language, it's going to be Fox. Like it or not.

Deadpool is my FAVRET, I just want fox to pull there head
Out of there ass and make tie epic. It makes me sad
To see that fox's big ass Ego can't see that this movie could be
Biger thin batman and avatar. RR will make it sell BIG.
I would cut my wrist if that's what it would take for fox
To take the script the zombie boy's wrote and make it happen
Come on fox just do it.

as a comic reader the deadpool books that come out every months 1 out of four are worth reading.

Deadpool ongoing by Way is great
Corps. needs to go
Team Up depends on the writer, and artist
Max is new but okat not having high hopes
Pulps is a cool noir story for the character

LEE - The script has an even split of "mask, scarred face and pretty boy" in there to keep Reynolds or any actor happy. But surely, after all RR has done for this character, he would happily wear the mask throughout. He loves Deadpool that much! It'll be the studios who want the face time and like I said, the script gives it and gives it well. Not like Spiderman's "I've put my mask on and two minutes later it's ripped because the world needs to see my face" kind of way.

I’ve had the privilege of reading the awesome script, and must say its nerdgasm overload for a Deadpool fan and comic book movie fans too!

The scarred face, the mask and of course a little bit of actual wade Wilson face time is required, and I believe the script delivers all three of those aspects of where Deadpool came from and partly why he is the way he is perfectly, and most importantly and thankfully, its NOT connected to Borigins!!!

If this film were to get made, it would explode and redeem FOX ever so slightly and get them back in peoples favour!

Yeah RL is more widely known for his crappy art and dodgy feet but at least hes making some noise and creating a rumble about this film getting made, which cant be a bad thing.

@DP

Miramax was operated as a separate company from Disney. They did not show any affiliation other than the accounting books. Unfortunately, it looks like Marvel will carry the actual Disney brand name with their movies as the distributors. Any movie using Disney's name will not get an R rating. I just hope they at least go for PG-13 at this point.

As for Starship Troopers, Buena Vista only distributed it through their International branches. In the US, it was a Columbia Tri-Star/Sony Pictures production and distribution.

Marvel's movies, post C.A., will probably be along the lines of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in terms of tone/violence/language.

If Ryan Reynolds falls through I say they go for Michael C. Hall. From his work in Dexter I could totally see him playing Deadpool. He already is all about the self narrative on Dexter and he doesn't just talk to voices but sees visions too. He does all this in a way that comes across as real. His humor isn't as zany as Reynolds but I think he would be a good second choice.

I'm not into Deadpool at all. can't take the character seriously so why should i care? however, i still think fans of the character deserve a good film becuase they are so dedicated and i respect that. FOX WAKE UP YOU MORONS!!! stops making everything pg-13 and go for the R like you use to in the 80's!!! THE NEW ALIEN SHOULD BE R! DEADPOOL SHOULD BE R!!! stop being cheap!
