Disney Will No Longer Report Global Box Office Numbers Meaning No More Weekend Top 10 Lists

With most theaters across the globe now closed, Disney has confirmed that they will no longer report global box office numbers, something that makes weekend top 10 lists an impossibility. Check it out...

For the past two weekends, Onward has been #1 at the box office. However, with the Coronavirus pandemic shutting down theaters nationwide, Disney has confirmed that they will no longer report numbers moving forward. This is hardly a surprise all things considered, as there aren't really very many theaters anywhere in the world that haven't closed their doors.

Deadline notes that theaters in China could be open again as soon as next weekend. The country is looking to rebound after a difficult few months, but the plan is reportedly to release "local catalog titles" for the time being.

A statement released by Disney about the decision not to report numbers reads, "Given the current large number of theater shutdowns around the globe, Disney will suspend global weekend reporting for the time being.  Wishing you and your families the best during these testing times and please be safe."

No other studios have weighed in as of yet, but with Disney/20th Century Studios not sharing box office date, it will be impossible for analysts to release any sort to "Top 10" lists.

Believe it or not, there aren't any major theatrical releases coming our way between now and June 5th's Wonder Woman 1984, and with Disney forced to cut Onward's run short, it will be interesting to see whether they decide to give that an early Digital release similar to Bloodshot and The Hunt.

Do you think Disney has made the right decision?

"Do you think Disney has made the right decision?"

That depends upon what basis you think should be used to determine what would be a "right" and "wrong" decision. Did it have a financial negative impact? Did someone get depressed because they couldn't see it anymore and committed suicide? What basis could be used that would be relevant?

I personally don't think it matters, didn't know they had a top-ten list, never wanted this list, and I don't understand why anyone would think it is important to anyone else but Disney.

It's their business, not mine. So, if I "had" to answer the question, then "Yes.", they made the right decision, because it's their decision to make. If it has no negative consequences, I can't see how it would be "wrong".

It's kind of a weird question. It's like if I made a decision that was mine to make, and it didn't have any concrete negative effect on me or anyone else, and then people started discussing if I made the "right" decision. I would also wonder why they thought it was a question worth bringing up and why they might think it is their place to decide if it is "right" or "wrong". I'm sorry, but it seems like a really weird question. Maybe I'm missing the point of it, unless it is just an excuse to get a conversation going.

It is rather pointless for them to bother... on Wednesday, Onward led the domestic box office with $61,500, and that’s just going to keep dropping as more restrictions go into place. When you’re usually measuring the top of the box office in millions, that’s chicken scratch.

Apparently drive-in theaters are doing good business where they still exist, though. That’s kind of fun.

What a coincidence, I'm not reporting my global box office numbers either.

While the theaters are closed and movies are delayed indefinitely, you gotta give props to The Asylum for their dedication to releasing direct to bargain bin mockbusters.

They can report the weekend "bottom" 10.

Box office reporting until this pandemic is under control is pointless. There is barely any box office to report, at the moment and doing so will only hurt company stock which has already taken a pounding, so why do it? Once things are back to some sense of normalcy, we will be seeing the numbers again - Simple.

@FoxForce5 -
Yes, I am sure not reporting the box office and just letting the films continue to result in unprecedented losses for the studio is bound to help.

Without informing the share holders, the share holders will assume the worst and back out of fear/panic.

Normalcy is not going to return and even if something remotely akin to normalcy ever does occur the box office is still going to be impacted for years.
