JUNGLE CRUISE Debuts Globally With $90 Million Between Theatrical And Premier Access Release On Disney+

Scarlett Johansson may be suing Disney after Black Widow was released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+, but that hasn't stopped the studio from touting Jungle Cruise's impressive opening weekend.

There's been a lot of discussion online over the past week surrounding Disney's decision to simultaneously release Black Widow theatrically and on Disney+'s Premier Access service. The studio and star Scarlett Johansson have issued conflicting statements about the latter's financial compensation for a dual release, and we've since heard that Emma Stone is also considering legal action following Cruella's similar debut back in May.

Despite that, Jungle Cruise dropped on the streaming service for $29.99 this weekend, and Disney has now announced that the movie debuted #1 at the box office. It opened to an estimated total of more than $90M globally, including $34.2M in domestic box office, $27.6M in international box office, and over $30M in Disney+ Premier Access consumer spend globally.

Whether talent like it or not, it's clear this type of release strategy is paying off for Disney.

"Jungle Cruise is the perfect summer adventure film, bringing a beloved theme park attraction to both the big screen and living rooms in a way that only Disney can," Disney said in a statement. "We remain focused on offering consumer choice during these unprecedented times, and it is clear that fans and families value the ability to make decisions on how they prefer to enjoy Disney’s best-in-class storytelling."

In our review of Jungle Cruise, we concluded by saying: "Jungle Cruise is a ride you won’t want to get off; with its charming three leads and a standout villain in Jesse Plemons, you’ll be all aboard (sorry) for a fun family blockbuster that reminds us why we love going to the movies."

If you watched Jungle Cruise this weekend, was it on the big screen or a small one at home?

It was ok. I didn't think I quite met it's D+ price tag, but I've blown 30 bucks on worse things.

If Blunt and Stone sue, betting they wont be making these whole, share profit deals.

wonder how much Johansson would have been paid if she didnt accept that deal

It’s not being touted.

Stop with that.

Read the article on Deadline for a better understanding.

32 mil theatrical is absolutely abysmal.

@SauronthePower - Not really abysmal… pretty much in line with the usual Rock-led non-sequels (Rampage $35m opening, Jumanji $36m, Skyscraper $25m). With Covid concerns, that’s not bad.

@SauronthePower - it's almost on par with both jumanji openings which had long legs and turned out to be almost 1billion $ globally. imo its not bad and with the positive word of mouth could get to 500m. i think the big question is how long will China block disney movies

Studios NEED to stop giving $200 million to movies. Like, all studios. I'll put it like this.

DUNE has a listed budget of $165 million. That is WB's big ass worlds spanning, awards contending, franchise starter/Denis Villanues magnum opus with a stacked cast.

This movie costs $35 million MORE. Hell, Black Widow shouldn't have been $200 either, that should have stayed around $140.

This isn't a Disney alone issue, hell, No Time to Die is apparently extremely expensive (like $250-300 million), WB comic book movies are notorious for being way too damn expensive, but seriously, CALM DOWN ON BUDGETS HOLYWOOD

@DannRamm113 - don’t worry.

If Bob Chapek succeeds in his role as the village dunce, movie budgets will shrink by half and Secret Wars will end up looking like the Hallmark Christmas Movie-of-the-Week.

But…………….Yay Streaming !!!!!

Also off topic...How is it that WB gave out Godzilla vs Kong for FREE on HBOMax and yet its still about to make $100 more than Black Widow, which cost $30 on Disney+

@DannRamm113 - Agreed.

A lot of these flicks that have $150-200 million dollar budgets are hardly "epic" in scale and size and it's often not warranted imo.

That said, with the North American box office neutered going forward, things are looking rather bleak.

@DannRamm113 - imo Godzilla is more of a big screen movie, and HBO max is still expensive even if the movie is free. also when you add disney+ $ BW is at almost $425m world wide after 3 weeks while Godzilla is at $465m near the end of its run (also Godzilla got $200m from china where BW did not release)

I don't understand these law suits. Are they still not getting the original deal of the box office take, but with the added cut of some of the streaming revenue probably than she would have gotten normally? Does she think that if it was only released in theaters it would have made bigger theatrical numbers? Surely it would have but not by a lot.

I'm not industry professional and I'm 100% on the outside looking in, ignorant to a lot. But this just doesn't make sense to me. Theaters haven't come even close to getting back to normal and won't for a long time I'd bet.

@ElricReturns - We don't know how much percentage ScarJo gets off the gross, but presumably she doesn't get any streaming revenue. F9 was released exclusively to theaters. If you just compare that box-office to where Black Widow currently sits, it's pretty obvious that ScarJo probably missed out on AT LEAST 2 to 10 million. MCU fans who would've gone to the theaters, if watching it from home (several times) wasn't an option.

Movie was a fun watch. Johnson and Blunt have great chemistry.
