NATIONAL TREASURE 3 Not A Priority At Disney; Follow-Up May Hit Disney's Streaming Service

Though it has maintained its status as a meme-able franchise for over a decade, NATIONAL TREASURE has not seen any significant movement for years. Thankfully, THE MEG Director Jon Turteltaub has an update.

Its been years since Nicolas Cage has led a blockbuster, and even though he has been starring in disposable B-movies as of late, it is no doubt that audiences would welcome a Cage-aissance with open arms. Furthermore, a return to exposed cinema in the form of a National Treasure sequel would guarantee a hit for Disney. This begs the question - Why hasn't it happened yet?

The franchise, which began in 2004, has retained its status as an extremely quotable film, one that almost relies on Cage as much as Mission: Impossible relies on Tom Cruise. Doing press rounds for The Meg, Jon Turteltaub, who helmed the first two films, had much to say to Collider regarding the potential threequel's development.

Disney feels they have other films they want to make that they think will make them more money . . . they’re obviously doing a really good job at making great films. I just think this would be one of them, and they don’t quite realize how much the Internet is begging for a third National Treasure. The script was close, but not so great that the studio couldn’t say yes. But it’s been good enough that the studio could have said, ‘Yes, keep going. Get closer.’

Additionally, In an interview with Slash Film, Turteltaub mentions the possibility of dropping on Disney's streaming service.

Finding the right script is hard.  It was brutal for the first two.  It’s still gonna be brutal for the third . . . The fact is it’ll probably be made as a streaming film.

Do you think National Treasure 3 will ever come into fruition?

Honestly, I think time has passed on this franchise for a third film. Nic Cage isn't the actor he was back then and this film probably would not do well at the box office.

Well it's been at least a decade since NT2 sooooooooo common sense would dictate that it's not been a priority.

I wouldn't mind seeing Cage try for a 3rd - why not? No way it will be worse than the second one.

On the flip side, the first film had some pretty good Cage moments, no doubt:

The first one was a surprisingly fun little treasure hunt movie. I enjoyed it. The second one was instantly forgettable. I don't remember a single part of it and never really needed a third.

@MrDandy - the only things I remember about the 2nd film is that it has Ed Harris in it and Cage is trying to clear his father's name. Can't remember anything else about it.

I didn't enjoy the first movie at all. Felt like Da Vinci Code lite.

I want this to happen! Met Nic Cage a few times since they filmed the Independence Hall scenes at my work. I want them to close out the trilogy

Off-Topic:

I’m switching from MoviePass to AMC A-List. It was nice while it lasted. Tonight I went to a theater to see a movie. Ten minutes before the movie, I can see showtimes in the app.

Get to the theater 15 minutes before the movie and it says “there are no more screenings at this...”.

Only e-ticket theaters works for me now. RIP.

I can see why this would be on the Disney streaming serivce and I can see why Disney doesn’t prioritize it as a theatrical release. Although I’d totally pay to see it in theaters.

First one was okay. Second was definitely having more fun with the conspiracies and stuff so for the third just go all crazy

I liked them as a kid, but I didn't realize so many people were craving a third one of these.

Whats wrong with having fun entertaining movies. I absolutely love the NT movies. One, I always enjoyed american history and to weave a movie around it rather the facts were accurate or not was fun. These movies are the type that you find yourself quoting to one another. I know my childern and I would always repeat a line when something would happen that relates. Just like the Night of the museum movies. They are just plain fun. Movies are made to entertain.

Well they left the 2nd one on sort of a cliffhanger type situation with whatever was on the page the president asked him to take a look at for him. I for one love the NT films because at the time when they came out they reminded me of a sort of inspiration from Indiana Jones and pure adventure films. The history was enjoyable to learn from as well. Maybe they can connect the 3rd to the history of the Sumerians and how primitive humanity believed we were visited by extraterrestrials?
