DOCTOR STRANGE 2 Costume Designer Reveals Who Was Responsible For Professor X's New Look (Exclusive)

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Costume Designer Graham Churchyard has revealed who came up with Professor X's X-Men: The Animated Series-inspired look and how the costume was pieced together.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness took us to Earth-838 and introduced a team of "heroes" known as The Illuminati. Since the movie arrived in theaters, various comments have left us under the impression that they ruled over their reality with an iron fist, hence why they seemed to have few qualms about killing Doctor Strange when he crossed the line.

However, arguably the most heroic member of this group outside of Mister Fantastic was Professor X.

He gave the MCU's Doctor Strange the opportunity to do the right thing, but ultimately failed to overpower the unhinged Scarlet Witch upon entering her mind. Clearly based on how the character appeared in X-Men: The Animated Series, Sir Patrick Stewart reprised the role of Charles Xavier for a fan-pleasing handful of scenes.

It made sense with the X-Men '97 revival on the horizon, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Costume Designer Graham Churchyard recently told us about how that look based on the TV show came to be.

"That was straight from Kevin [Feige]. In his youth, he watched the 90s animation and said, 'We want to do, instead of the wheelchair, the yellow [one].' That's in the animation, as you know, and so is the green suit," he explains in the video above. "I sent Kevin pictures of Sir Patrick's fitting and he was just over the moon that we'd done the green suit and the striped tie exactly like the comic."

"I made that as a Saville Row tailored suit with Yorkshire woollens. Patrick reminded me that, many years ago, his mother used to work in the woollen trade in Yorkshire, so he was he was very happy he was wearing something from that heritage," Churchyard continued. "He doesn't need a superhero suit, right? He's Patrick Stewart. That was just taken directly from the animation and Kevin was the first to say, 'That's what we're doing. Can you make it?'"

We're not surprised that Feige was the one who came up with giving Professor X a makeover that was identical to what we saw in X-Men: The Animated Series

While creating this look for Stewart doesn't sound as complex as it was for a character like Captain Carter, it's still fascinating to get some insights into how Churchyard and his team made it happen. Regardless of how Xavier is portrayed moving forward, fans will no doubt forever be grateful to see this take on the X-Men's leader in live-action.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now available on Digital and will be released on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD July 26.

Hearing the theme when he rolled out was a big time nerd moment. I was glad I was able to avoid spoilers even though I didn't see it for 2 weeks until after it released.

@QuietStorm - "... I didn't see it for 2 weeks until after it released."

Wow! That's some serious discipline there! Congratulations! That would have been very tough for me.

@QuietStorm - Best moment for me I love when they do stuff like that.

I love Stewart but he’s so old now. I think Macavoy would have looked perfect in that chair as animated series Charles.

I was expecting this to be about why he was wearing a turtleneck.
No one of the 90’s proper questioned his green suit and clunky chair, especially once that glorious music kicked in.

Hopefully that puts an end to everyone saying this is the 90s show Xavier. Even his suit is British, when the animated Xavier was American.

Green suit? Oh shit, am I color blind?

@UGLYsonic - in fairness its a very dark green.

Ngl, I thought that was all Raimi. But this is not surprising, either.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I think it was on Leonard Maltin's podcast that Feige said the 90s X-Men cartoon was what got him into Marvel in his 20s, having been a Star Wars/Star Trek kid growing up.

For me, this moment was evidence that the CBM audience is spoiled. Charles Xavier cameoed in an MCU movie wearing the suit and the chair from TAS. With the theme tune.

10 years ago people would be freaking out it was such a cool moment. Like I was haha. But instead it's treated like run of the mill and people like to talk negative shit about the movie.

I'll say again what I've said before, this was the most comic book comic book movie I've seen in ages and I loved it.

The theme, suit, tie, and wheelchair were all great, but I loved that they also included the cheesy wobbly circles coming out of Xavier's head when he used his telepathy.

@DalekCraigWasson - That was a really nice touch!

The big floating chair looks cool in comics, toys and cartoons but in live action movies it looks kinda big and clunky.

@AnthonyVonGeek - Yea they made it too big for him. The way his arms layer over it like a baby sliding down a high chair lol

Someone got paid to design him wearing a basic suit. Also color grading was so bad it came across looking too dark to emphasize the green, so the reference was lost.
