Ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' release, rumours swirled about which Variants we could look forward to seeing in the sequel. Professor X's name came up very early on, with the teaser trailer later confirming that Sir Patrick Stewart had been enlisted to play a take on the mutant inspired by X-Men: The Animated Series

Captain Carter and Captain Marvel (with Maria Rambeau in place of Carol Danvers) were later confirmed, but The Illuminati's biggest surprises - Mister Fantastic and Black Bolt - were saved for the movie itself.

Now, some concept art shared by Soren Bendt has confirmed the identities of two alternate members of the team. As you can see below, we have Balder the Brave and Iron Monger, two characters we believe were swapped out relatively late in the day when the decision to make The Illuminati a little more star-studded was made.

Daniel Craig was eyed to play Balder, but was unable to make it to set due to COVID restrictions. It's been said that Bruce Campbell later took over, though we're not 100% on that. The Asgardian showing up was always a strange decision, especially as regular moviegoers were unlikely to know who Thor's brother from the comic books actually is.

As for Iron Monger, his presence better explains the Iron Legion working for The Illuminati. As for who was in the suit, we can't help but wonder whether this might have been Tom Cruise's rumoured cameo as an evil Tony Stark Variant.

It's always fun to see what might have been, but it's hard to fault the presence of Mister Fantastic and Black Bolt. Recently, John Krasinski suggested he won't return for the Fantastic Four reboot, leaving fans disappointed that his cameo was likely a one-and-done appearance in the MCU.

What do you guys make of this alternate Illuminati?

They should have just done the Tom Cruise cameo. Movie feels incredible underwhelming compared to what it could have been

@Matchesz - illuminati suppose to be the worlds greatest minds so what is Cap Carter and Monica Rambo doing in the lineup exactly, just feels hella random and *ahem* forced

@Matchesz -

The Illuminati is a group of leaders, not just geniuses. Black Bolt and Namor are both kings, and nowhere near the intellect of Reed, T'Challa, Tony, or even Xavier. So Monica's variant of Cpt Marvel is their representative of tht universe's cosmis side.

As for Cpt Carter, she's a stand-in for Cap himself, who in the comics was brought in as the team's moral compass, after they themselves realized how they had f#cked up beyond repair with Civil War and Secret Invasion.

I liked Multiverse of Madness (especially the parts that had Raimi's signature style) and I like what we got with the Illuminati line up. But the fact we didn't get to see more of the multiverse was a BIG disappointment. Also, as cool as it was seeing Krasinski as Reed, I'm glad they are going with someone different for the FF movie.

Honestly I think this line up would've been better. You get a variant of the main 3 avengers plus captain marvel, who is meant to be arguably the most powerful. It illustrates the threat level scarlet witch poses.

Would’ve been nice to have one more character in the Illuminuti.
The Tom Cruise Ironman variant thing sounded like an entertaining idea. Also Thors brother Boulder would’ve been cool and I wouldn’t have mind seeing a Panther variant too. So many characters to choose from. But ultimately they had a cool line up, just wish they didn’t get taken out so quickly and the smartest man Mr Fantastic saying the dumbest thing possible pre fight was a bit off putting. Other than that I enjoyed that movie and the Scarlett Witch dismantling the Illuminati.

They should put Justin hammer as the alternate iron man where tony stark was an evil rich guy and hammer is not

Craig and (especially) Cruise would've been fun to see, but hopefully this means that they can save them for bigger roles latter on.
