When Marvel Studios announced plans to expand the MCU on television through Disney+, it soon became clear that the streaming shows would be essential viewing for those hoping to follow what's happening in theaters. With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it appears prior knowledge of WandaVision, Loki, and possibly even What If...? will be necessary to fully understand what's happening.

Loki introduced us to the idea of the Multiverse and "Variants," and writer Michael Waldron penned both that series and the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. According to this movie's producer, Richie Palmer, this helped streamline the former Sorcerer Supreme's next solo adventure.

"It was really exciting. We found that we didn't need to spend a lot of time recapping the rules; we felt the audience would get a lot of that by now," he explains in D23 Magazine (via The Direct). "With Michael, we could jump into telling a good story within what's already been established."

"Michael's strength is the character stuff. As you saw in Loki, all the best moments involved the characters against the backdrop of those alternate timelines. It's kind of like that in our movie, too. Michael's script brought a lot of heart to sci-fi concepts such as the Multiverse."

Clearly, Loki was meant to familiarise us all with the idea of multiple realities and how Sir Patrick Stewart, for example, will make his return as a Professor X Variant. Hopefully, casual moviegoers won't struggle too much, as an overreliance on these Disney+ TV shows to fill in the gaps could leave fans who aren't quite so tuned into everything feeling somewhat alienated by these ambitious MCU plans.

We're definitely excited to see how Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness builds on Loki, though, and it's clear this shared world is about to get even bigger as it embraces the Multiverse.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in theaters on May 6!

OT:
I finished a peacemaker and I thought it was pretty good BUT am I the only one who sees that James Gunn just combined his previous films Slither and Super together?

I liked TSS a lot and thought it felt like “new Gunn” just R, whereas PM felt like Old “not as good” Gunn.

Just all my opinion of course.

The writing in Loki was mostly very strong so I hope that carries over to MOM.

Waldren has been pretty consistent so far. Looking forward to seeing what he does in Multiverse of Madness.

The rules of marvels multiverse are starting to get a little confusing for me. Its seems that time-travel from endgame, alternate timelines from Loki, multiverse shenanigans from no way home, and whatever the hell is happening in Multiverse of Madness seem like completely different things. Can anybody explain this? I really hope everyhting is more streamlined by the end of the movie.

@LeBronStan -

Time travel let's you travel to your OWN timeliness in your universe. But pretty much the moment you step foot in that new timeliness, it's now a branched universe. That's what the TVA were pruning at the instruction of He Who Remains.

Sophie killed He Who Remains. Now there's no more pruning. So the multiverse has been (re)born. Or rather... allowed to propagate.

Alternate timelines In Loki, amazing spider verse, raimi verse, are all just different universes. Different words for the same thing.

Loki broke the dam. Wandavision teased us with its implications (thanks Darkhold). Spiderman busted the dam wide open. And Dr. Strange mom will flood the world with the dam's waters.

Hope that helps!

@Vigor - That helps a ton thank you, but doesn't the ancient one state that the multiverse already exists in the the first Dr Starnge? How can the multiverse be reborn if it already existed?

@LeBronStan - I'm trying to recall if the word "multiverse" is used in DS1. The word "dimensions" is used a lot and it's quite possible that other dimensions and other universes are not the same thing.

@LeBronStan - The way I see it is in Loki, time is shown as a loop, thus it has no beginning or end. We perceive Loki as having happened after Endgame, but as time is a loop in ‘Loki’ when Kang is killed and that timeline shatters, it shatters in the past, present and future all at once thus a multiverse has both always existed and never existed

Also the time loop in ‘Loki’ did have different strands in it so alternate timelines seemed to be allowed as long as they ended up at the same end to create the same beginning

@ptick - Multiverse is directly referenced in Doctor Strange 1 from the Ancient One.

So I guess the new Dr Strange won't make any sense to me huh?

I haven't seen loki or what if, should I even bother to see this movie?

If Waldron is able to get around exposition (something that basically all of us agree drags the movies down), this is really going to be something special. And hopefully, those in the audience who didn’t watch the show get the same experience.

@Typhoon20 - Oh thank heavens for this comment. I've felt even more let down by this series seeing so many people treat it like the Second Coming of Marvel or something. I proper *hated* this show, truly. The writing in particular was horrid. Bizarrely so, in fact--although when you know Mike Waldron used his own (terrible) shelved script for a sci-fi film and repurposed Marvel characters to fit in the (badly) revamped story, it starts (sadly) to make sense.
