DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Promo Art Reveals First Look At Shuma-Gorath

It's been widely reported for some time now that Shuma-Gorath will be Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' lead villain, and that's been confirmed thanks to a very cool new piece of promo art...

For the longest time, it's been reported that Shuma-Gorath will be Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' lead villain. In the comic books, the monstrous bad guy is intent on conquering the entire Multiverse, and it sounds like his MCU counterpart will target the young America Chavez - who has the ability to travel between worlds - in order to make that happen.

Now, a first look at the villain has been revealed courtesy of official merchandise listed on Australian website booktopia

While this is a stylised, comic book-style piece of promo art, it appears Sam Raimi's take on Shuma-Gorath will stick pretty close to what we've seen on the page. Something tells us the filmmaker, known for his horror work, will have a lot of fun bringing this creature to life on the big screen next year.

Arguably the biggest talking point here is the fact that what we do see of the villain appears to confirm he's the same creature teased multiple times in What If...? Given the monster's desire to take over the Multiverse, it makes sense for him to have appeared there, and could be what opens the door to those animated Variants making live-action cameo appearances.

While the sequel's release date was recently pushed back, it's highly likely merchandise like this will continue to find its way online over the next few months. Hopefully, that means more shots of Shuma-Gorath, because his introduction could be a game-changer for the Marvel Multiverse...

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be released on May 6, 2022.

I am glad we are finally getting less grounded charecters in the MCU. Next few years should get very interesting.

@Manmarvel - I was thoroughly disappointed that characters like The Supreme Intelligence, or Ego were humanized. (Yes I understand that Supremor is a giant head in a canister, but we never even got a glimpse of it. And we only saw Ego in planet form for a blink and you'll miss it scene.)

So I'me extremely happy at the prospect of Shuma Gorath being in this in all his Lovecraftian glory.

@Manmarvel - absolutely. We should get better versions of more fantastic costumes that you don’t need an explanation for.

@Manmarvel - Yeah, as far as we've come to adapting more out there concepts in live-action, it still feels as though they need to ground certain things and I think it's totally unnecessary. If DC can do Starro and make it work, then Marvel shouldn't have any trouble embracing the craziest, comic book-y concepts they have to offer.

@Manmarvel - People will complain anyways: "What bad CGI, they should do more grounded characters", "This is so unrealistic", etc, etc.

@colonel179 - Lol, Del Toro has done weirder creatures since the early 2000's, this day when cg looks fake is because they don't care.

@CorndogBurglar - If only I would wish at some point there is a human zised one, Shuma on MVC was a beast.

@colonel179 - If Only there was a way to incorporate practical effects and then clean them up in post? Basically use cgi only when needed.... .
Coughs in del toro, Sir Ridley Scott, even Jon Favreau look at the first iron man movies with their practical suits and his work on the mandelorian with developing the volume....bonus for the whole Loki's television crew... It seems as if Disney's tv team is taking more care to create believable warm visuals than their movie hires!

I still wonder if the reason Derrickson left is that he didn't want it to be as multiverse focused, whereas Marvel Studios just wanted to go all in on it.

@bkmeijer - seems this would be the case.

I guess that’s something you have to reconcile with as a filmmaker, but also understand that this is always a possibility when taking an MCU job: having to pick up story or concepts that bleed over from other MCU projects.

These things are connected and the producers are fans who sit at a table and say “this would be cool” so they settle on A being the foundation of movie B and then ask filmmaker C if they can rock with it. I’m sure Feige is probably happiest when he finds someone who is a real fan of the films because it’s probably easier for them to digest having to accept that they can do what they want but within these confines or as long as you address and weave in A and B.

MoM seems that kinda MCU movie where you have predetermined fixed plotpoints that can't be changed, no matter who is directing the movie.

These days, Marvel Studios wants to talk about the Multiverse and they CLEARLY have plans for Wanda and who knows what else...
Kang? F4? Mutants?

So i can understand if Dr.Strange 2 morphed into something else and Derrickson wasn't ok with it.

My hope is that this movie will still feel like a very much Raimi movie but ehhhh i dunno, man...

@Doomsday8888 - That's the reason I've tampered my excitement regarding Raimi's return. I'm a big fan of his style and sensibility but I don't know if this is the kind of project he can let loose and have creative freedom. I don't know if he can work well in the MCU space, on a movie he also wasn't originally supposed to helm.

But I'm sure he'll bring his visual flair and that's always stimulating and fun.

@bkmeijer - nah, he basically confirmed with a tweet that it was due to the pressure of getting the movie out as quick as possible
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 11/1/2021, 11:19 AM
@DarkDetective - yeah I looked it up in the meantime, and it seems to be a mix of both him wanting to do a different movie than Marvel and him rather not wanting to wait to do another project

@bkmeijer - I can see that.

I really hope the relationship wasn't scarred and Derrickson comes back for maybe something smaller down the road. Loved his take to start Strange off in the MCU and a big fan of his in general.
Menks123
Menks123 - 11/1/2021, 11:23 AM
@Kingdork - Don't forget though, Raimi went to Marvel to take on this project and obviously, Feige LOVES Sam. I wouldn't be too worried about that, plus the reshoots are for Raimi to take his time with it from the things i've read.
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 11/1/2021, 11:24 AM
@Menks123 - I'm hoping we'll get a horror-ish anthology show in the MCU one day, and I kinda could see Derrickson return for an episode or two for that

@Origame - I think there will definitely be a conflict with her but was concerned they were going to try to make her a full on villian
Origame
Origame - 11/1/2021, 11:13 AM
@Shivermetimbers - I think that's bad too but after the events of wandavision I'd rather they just made her a villain at this point (she seriously did something more evil than most the actual villains in the mcu) or retcon wandavision as her being under someone's control.
Scarilian

He's going to be defeated in the opening scene to re-introduce Strange and then the movie will shift focus to Wanda as the antagonist.
