Captain Marvel featured the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of Gemma Chan (Crazy Rich Asians, Humans) as Minn-Erva, and although the blue-skinned warrior made an impression thanks to some impressive action scenes, it wasn't exactly the type of role that an actress of Chan's talents could really sink her teeth into.

Thankfully, Chan was given the opportunity to return for Chloe Zhao's upcoming Eternals as one of the movie's main characters, Sersi, and during an interview with Empire, she spoke about playing a completely different character in the MCU.

“I feel very lucky to have been welcomed back into the MCU so quickly after my first appearance; the reception has been very warm,” she tells the mag. “I feel fortunate because we had a lot of crossover in the crew between the two films so there was continuity in that sense, but these are completely different projects, in completely different times, the characters are different.”

Based on everything we've seen and heard, Eternals is also going to be a very different sort of Marvel movie, with Zhao (Nomadland, The Rider) given the go-ahead to bring her distinctive style to the project.

“We shot it like it was an indie film, almost completely on location using natural light, pretty much all at magic hour,” adds Chan. “It’s such an epic, ambitious film, with [Zhao] bringing her signature style and sensibility.”

You can check out the first trailer for Eternals below.

Marvel's Eternals also stars Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as the cosmic-powered Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Salma Hayak as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, Lia McHugh as the eternally young Sprite, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, Barry Keoghan as the aloof Druig, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena. Kit Harrington will also appear as Dane Whitman, aka Black Knight.

Marvel Studios' Eternals features an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind's most ancient enemy, The Deviants.

Eternals is set to hit theaters on November 4.

Gemma Chan is a goddess. She was absolutely wasted in Captain Marvel. Glad Feige offered her this to make up for totally screwing her over.

@globaltravels - She was underutilized, absolutely, but she was great with what little material she got.

@Godzillakartt - Yeah no 1 remembers the legendary Glen Close in GOTG vol 1. But marvel knows what they're doing with their story and their parts (big or small) so no complaints here.

I feel bad for Mickey Rourke in Iron Man 2 though, he was such an amazing actor after coming off of The Wrestler but Marvel didn't like Favreau's dark take on Whiplash so they cut out all his scenes which caused Favreau not to return for IM3.

@mastakilla39 - I thought Disney was the one that was interfering with Iron Man 2.

She went from being wasted in CM to leading that ensemble.

I don't generally like the washed out aesthetic that Zhao seems to love, but I'll give it a chance. Eternals is sort of like Guardians used to be: since few people really love the characters, it's an opportunity to let a creator go a little more crazy.

She said y’all wasted the hell out of me, RUN IT BACK

Going forward, I hope that more directors bring their “signature style” to the MCU. I love and appreciate its cohesiveness, but sometimes I wonder what it would look like if they were as visually varied as the comic books.

@WeaponXCII - I suppose for live action there's only so much you can change to be different, but tonally there's definitly differences. Just look at how differently Thor Ragnorok ended up being to the last 2.

I think the only way they would vary visually, is if the characters were continously recast, kind of like james bond movies.

@WeaponXCII - Phase 4 is looking to be a bit different though. Can't wait for Eternals.

@WeaponXCII - right? Ever since Favreau created the official tone for the MCU going forward with IM2008, Feige has aped it ever since. I truly don’t feel we’ve gotten a film that stands out from the pack since Cap 2. infinity War, Civil War, all the Guardians films, Thor Rag, all those films are so very similar in how they play out. Action comedies. Like we won’t ever get a Matt Reeves the Batman under Feige, or a rated R property for a movie like Blade. The director of Blade should have the same exact free reign that Hamada gave James Gunn for his rated R Suicide Squad film. I don’t think the writers room approach to creating screenplays makes
Interesting creative output. We need creatives to be more empowered to give us brand new, fresh experiences with the genre. I am thankful Feige is bright enough to realize DP3 deserves its R rating tho.

@Jaykay21 - Thor rag just aped what Guardians did but with more more more jokes more one liners more sight gags. It’s a MCU film through and through just with even more tension deflating humor than normal. But still completely status quo

“Signature style and sensibility”...... hasnt she only made one film? I know it’s critically acclaimed but hard to have a signature style when you only have one film to your resume. Correct me if I’m wrong

@McMurdo - Three films. I've seen two, and there's definitely a similar aesthetic. Nothing we haven't seen before, really, but they are very nicely shot.
