Marvel's THE ETERNALS Finds Its Director With SONGS MY BROTHER TAUGHT ME's Chloe Zhao

Well, that was fast! We only found out that Marvel Studios was planning an Eternals movie fairly recently, but it's now been announced that Chloe Zhao (The Rider) will helm the project. More past the jump.

According to THR, Marvel Studios has tapped Chloe Zhao to direct the studio's next potential franchise, The Eternals.

The script from Matthew and Ryan Firpo is said to focus on "super-powered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants that were created by cosmic beings known as Celestials." The report also confirms that the main characters will be Ikaris, "a man fueled by cosmic energy," and Sersi, "who relishes moving amongst humans."

Zhao garnered acclaim for indie flicks The Rider and Songs My Brothers Taught Me, and was actually on Marvel's radar to helm the Black Widow movie before Cate Shortland landed the gig.

Apparently, Nicole Kassell (HBO's Watchmen pilot) Travis Knight (Bumblebee), and Birds of Passage duo Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra were also in contention to
direct The Eternals

Never heard of her. This movie is going to be grand on scale. I would gather a 250 mill production budget.

@Ronan3Accuser - They would NEVER have that large a budget for an unproven, untested franchise.
Ant-Man was like 135, Captain Marvel 152, Dr. Strange 165, Black Panther 200. Yes, it might be more expensive due to the potential for its scope, but SO much of that is VFX, that there's no reason to think it would have to be over 200 and I wouldn't be surprised if it weren't 15-20M lower than that.

@fabnic - Yeah because all movies that have had a 200 million plus budget have been tested and proven franchises.

@Ronan3Accuser - sorry I'm so late to responding to this, but you pretty utterly fail to see the point.

I wasn't talking about "all movies," I was talking about MARVEL STUDIOS, who have consistently shown an unwillingness to open a franchise with too large a budget. The CLOSEST they've come is Black Panther at 200M.

They are actually a very budget-conscious studio for the kinds of movies they make, so it would be a surprise if they went as high as you predict. Maybe they will, but historically they haven't.
