Dragon Ball Z: The Saiyan Invasion

An Epic Take on an Epic Tale.

Hello Everyone! First we will start of with the Cast and then a rundown of the movie. Some of my choices May seem Left but if you read my description bellow each choice you would understand. I have made very calculated choices and instead of going the Martial Arts movie route(which tends to lead to failure). I am aiming something more in the Lord of the Ring/Matrix Trilogy epics then the Flashy Brawler flick.

This is a movie that would be leaning into the $250 Million range as far as budget goes. So no low balling(coughMARVELcough) and going for a bunch of no names to save budget. I'm gonna start off with the Supporting Characters and lead into the main Cast to save some suspense.

Ox King - Philip Seymour Hoffman

Philip Seymour Hoffman is a fantastic actor who will really bring the humor to this role. I Love the Idea of him being in this even if it is a small role.

Chi Chi - Kristin Kreuk

Well I wanted to go for a girl that is of mixed Asian culture. Reason being above. I never saw the Ox King as Asian but Chi Chi in the show looks Asian. Beyond the Appearance I think she can play a very Pissed off Women with a martial arts background. She is also in the age range I would Like everyone to be. Plus she has prior training in a major role this will be no more then a few scenes and a montage.

Grandpa Gohan - Jackie Chan

Honestly WHO better to be the goofy martial arts master who trains the Strongest Fighter in the Universe? Jackie at first was my choice for Master Roshi but I can't see him being an old perv. This role would do great and we would get a pretty cool training montage. I would love to see him in the film even if it's only 5 minutes.

Dr. Briefs(Bulmas father) - Gary Oldman

Not just the fact that he can pull off any role he ever wanted because he is a phenomenal actor. No, not just cause he looks a lot like him with the mustache. Not cause I think 5th Element rocks and everything he touches can turn to gold. Actually yes all of those reasons, plus I think he would do it.

Mrs. Briefs - Michelle Pfeiffer

We need a woman in her 40/50's that is still stunningly beautiful. She would be great for this role not to mention I used to have the biggest crush on her growing up. I would also change the character up a bit and make her less ditsy. Just generally in her own world but caring and cheerful.

Yajirobe - Jack Black

I hate Yajirobe but I feel he needs to be in the film. Who seems to be a little much and annoying. Yes, Perfect casting. He would just be some side comic relief.

EDIT: Master Roshi - Chia Hui Liu(Gordon Liu)

You may have seen him in Kill Bill Vol 2 where he plays the Kung Fu Master. He is always playing a bald monk and also tends to play cranky old men who can be very sexist. He speaks english and fairly well so I believe he would be a great choice for the Perverted Master Roshi. This time he will be a real Pervert.

Kami - Jackie Earle Haily

First off I know hes short but I like that. Second He is a great actor and a Black belt. He did most of his own combat in Watchmen and I would love to give him some time to showcase skills in a flash back as well as in plans for a sequel. Third I like the Idea of him giving some wisdom and guidance to the Z warriors when they are in a time of peril.

Bulma - Jessica Biel

Well what can I say she is a great actress, who has proven it with very diverse roles. She looks like she can kick ass and I think she is simply gorgeous. A great pic and she would look even hotter with a full head of blue hair.

Oolong, Puar, Turtle, Icarus, Chiaotzu, and Mr. Popo - CGI
I believe non of these characters should be actor nor puppets. You can come up with the Voice actors. One thing is for sure They Will all be in it.

^^^This would be the supporting cast and a lot of them would not be getting much screen time in this film, some will make more face in the second film like Bulma. I still like to Cast big. If they can make Tropic Thunder with Tom Cruise in Fat Suit, I can afford these actors in my DBZ movie. lol

I decided to Cast the lead roles with great actors, that have little to no Combat experience and surround them with great martial artist. These are My Z warriors. They are all seasoned and accomplished martial Artist. This would allow for the big name stars that we bring in to feed off of there skill and execution to make for the best fight scenes possible.

Tien - Mark Decasco

He may be getting old but he is still in great shape. He has exceptional Martial Arts skill and is a pretty good actor. He has a unique look that I believe will look good with Tien.

Yamcha - Jon Foo

You can see him in the new Tekken movie. I like his look and enjoy his martial arts performances. I think he looks a lot like Yamcha and could see him pulling this one off quite easy.

Krillin - Ernie Reyes Jr.

Time we actually see such a pivotal character to this story, rightfully included in the film. You may remember Ernie from Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze. He is also hosted his own show on MTV, the Final Fu, Beat the crap out the Rock in the Rundown, and had a little film called Surf Ninjas that sucked but I used to love. lol He is a great martial artist and has the natural personality to play Krillin. Hes 5'5 and Built like DBZ character. Again, Perfect!

Piccolo - Michael Jai White

Well Piccolo needs a strong and imposing man that has great martial arts ability and good screen presence. For those who think Michael Jai White is a non versatile actor who plays the same role, GOOD hes playing that role again here. He will give the wise, angry, calculated and ruthless character a natural feel. I always wanted to cast but believed he was too short. At 6'0 he will be more then great for this role.

King Kai - Jonah Hill

Hill is may not seem like the wise all knowing master but his very sarcastic and cynical humor will be a nice update to the very cheesy yet humorous character king Kai. He would really be hilarious telling the Z fighters how much they suck for all dying to a bunch of little green guys and a 7 foot bald man in spandex or a speedo. lol

The Saiyans Were hard for me to Cast at first. I didn't want them to look like good old all American actors nor did i want them to look like they were Asian. I was looking for a Mediterranean look seeing as I always associated the Saiyan race with Spartans.

(The Fathers)
King Vegeta & Bardock - Gerard Butler & Christian Bale (The Fathers)

I chose them but it would be for a short cameo and kind of just for fun. If they were both willing to do some short screen time I would love for them to play these roles.

Raditz - Kevin Durand

Hes 6'6, which in my opinion is awesome lol. I think he would make really good for the first villain introduced and the first big fight scene in the movie.

Nappa - Nathan Jones

He Looks Like him and definitely has the build and aggression. Not much more to say about this choice. He is also a practitioner of Muay Thai. You Just don't teach big people how to fight!

Those are some of the Saiyans now we move on to our Leads. I wanted to get someone who can play an arrogant prince with an obsession and a skilled warrior who never really grew up and has a natural charisma. Also they need to look the part.

Vegeta - Johnathan Rhys Meyers

Johnathan Rhys Meyers is a great actor and has played quite a fantastic Royal Asshole. He stared in The Tudors as King Henry the VIII. He has the look and can play a devious prick, yet you can still see the Hero in him.

Goku - Jake Gyllenhaal

This May seem a Little off to most but I really believe his perfect for this role. A high caliber actor who would deliver an intense, humorous and passionate performance. He is one of the great actors of our time and actually does look the part. He has this awkward charm to him that I believe really gives off Goku. He is truly in the best shape of his life and if you get him trained in some martial arts I see no one better for this role, in a serious take on it and not a b rated, popcorn, wannabe Kung Fu flick.

Gohan - ???

I Would Cast a young unknown martial artist. If you have any Suggestion go ahead. Not Noah Ringer, he is too old for this role but he would be good for Young Goku in Flashbacks.

As for visuals I would go with Zack Snyder(300, Watchmen) and Edgard Wright(Sean of the Dead,Scott Pilgrim Vs the World) to do a Director/producer combo of the century. These 2 together know how to treat source material and make it a visual experience. With Scott Pilgrim having this over the top Manga visual style and 300 and Watchmen feeling like they were pulled from the comic pages just make sense.

As for Fight Choreography and Stunts I would Like to see a team of Isaac Florentine(Undisputed 2 & 3), Larnell Stovall(Undisputed 3,Blood & Bone), and Koichi Sakamoto(Power Rangers RPM,Guyver: Dark Hero). All of these men I would like to see being lead by Donny Yen who to me is the best Martial Arts Film Talent today. From His Choreography, Directing, Producing, to His Acting he is the real deal. I recommend you check out "Dragon Tiger Gate", "Flash Point", and "Bodyguards and Assassins" to get a good Idea of the Direction I would take the fights but with Snyder's Story Boarding, Wright's dialogue and there combined visuals.

Just Picture this on the Big Screen

Hope This was not too meaty of a Fan cast, usually they are shorter but I feel detail was necessary. I Hope you all Enjoyed. Please Mouth Off Below.

Why, Oh Why? You had me on a cruise towards a great build-up which includes amazing cast that I've never seen suggested on the internet before.

And then you had to ruin it all with Jake Gyllenhaal as Goku? NOOOOOOOO.....

LOL....On a more serious note, most of the casting here is genius. Michael Jai White as Piccolo stands out from the rest. This is a 'must-have' casting choice for the next movie. So, now I'm gonna pretend I didn't see Gyllenhaal's name, and give you a big fat A+. :D

I'm not sure about Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jackie Earle Haily and Jessica Biel.
But the others are awesome choices. Now this is a Dragonball movie.

yowsaman - 8/24/2010, 2:34 AM
my god. why is jessica biel so fiiiiiiiine! :p
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 8/24/2010, 5:52 AM
@ Yowsaman: Jessica Biel is "so fiiiiiine" because God LOVES Justin Timberlake and Chris Evans THAT MUCH!

@ superheromoviefan: Thank you those are a little sketchy for me as well seeing as they all appear to be very white in a more or less diverse cast. I personally added them because I like them as actors and would be the type of director to use the same actors in my films. Also Jessica Biel has been my crush since "Seventh Heaven", which is around the time "Bulma" was my animated crush.

@ Protonite: I figured he would be the one most people had a problem with. I never saw goku as the guy you look at and go man....hes gonna kick my ass. I think Jake brings that to the part as well as the ability to then surprise you and kick some major ass. plus he has the build to be all battle Damaged, which is a must. Thank you though. Any suggestions on Goku?

P.S Look Out For Edit, I forgot to Include Master Roshi!

UnfriendlySpidey
UnfriendlySpidey - 8/24/2010, 11:29 AM
@ThaMessenger07 great casting! DBZ was my fav anime growing up and I would love to see this live-action movie on the silver screen! (now to me Dragonball Evo never existed and I believe there's a special place in hell for the people that created that god-awful abomination...) all kidding aside, a couple of things: Jake as Goku...I;m kinda undecided 'bout that one, but I can see where you're coming from.

King Vegeta, now it says Hugh Jackman but the pic is Gerard Butler...I'm not trying to correct you by any means, I just wasn't sure which one you meant? haha

Anyways great work! :D
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 8/24/2010, 11:46 AM
@ UnfriendlySpidey: I fixed it lol oops. Yeah I meant Gerard Butler, originally I was gonna go with Hugh Jackman but I changed my mind and i guess i forgot to edit it. Thanks!

As for Jake I know it may be tough but in looks and personality from film to film he gives me that feeling he could pull off a good Goku. Also this picture i found on Deviant art sealed the thought i of him as Goku in my head. The Pic kind of looks like Jake Gylenhaal lol. It was done by someone named "mistermoster".

This is a near PERFECT cast. Well done to you sir. Well done.

TheOneWhoRoseUp - 8/24/2010, 1:39 PM
Pretty Good Cast
I love your Raditz choice, small role but the absolute best person for him!
Im thrilled to see that someone has had the stones to cast a Krillen! i didnt!
Jack Black is a stroke of genius:)
Master Roshi is a bit predictable but sometimes you need a bankable actor! I went with Charlie Sheen as a white alternative.
I think you've had enough critism with Gyllenhaal so il let it slide...
AND HELL NO TO YOUR VEGETA! Not him! He would totally ruin Vegeta! im sorry but Nah-uh!
Biel is suuuuper hot but isnt really a 'Bulma'....but she is after all, SUPER HOT!

Dynamo
Dynamo - 8/24/2010, 1:52 PM
I perfer Durand for Nappa though. I like Karl Urban for Raditz.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 8/24/2010, 2:14 PM
@ Dynamo: Thank you Ive had this on my mind for a while and my ruff draft for a script is pretty good IMHO. As for Durand I thought about him being Nappa but he would have a more commanding role as the initial threat in the first 45 minutes of a movie I would hope to be about 3 hours long. BUT I do like the Karl Urban idea, He was actually my Bardock at first.

@ TheOneWhoRoseUp: Thank you! Sheen is a good one. Lol I was surprised on your dismay for my Vegeta lol but I'm interested to hear why. I personally feel he has that Asshole Vibe. Put some muscle and disipline in him and Hes Vegeta imo. As for Biel she can do it....cause shes hot and I would like to see her with the blue hair lol.

Dynamo
Dynamo - 8/24/2010, 2:23 PM
@ThaMessenger
I thought Durand could play Nappa more comandingly but also he plays subordanates well aswell.
I like the Jackie Chan choice, he was my choice for Roshi.
I don't really like Jonah Hill for King Kai I'm affraid.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 8/24/2010, 2:30 PM
@ Dynamo: Jonah would be hilarious. Just the way he talks would be a good movie update for the character. Who is always joking and kind of annoying.
Dynamo
Dynamo - 8/24/2010, 2:38 PM
@ThaMessenger
but you also need someone who can portray wisdom even if he is a little eccentric. I was thinking someone like Sammo Hung.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 8/24/2010, 2:42 PM
@ Dynamo: that was my first choice but then i decided to go a little less serious. I want King Kai to portray the shadow opposite of the master in movies. The wise yet fun loving master we will get from Jackie and Gordon. I want to switch it up and has a kind of odd wisdom that just doesn't fit him in any way. I mean when you think of it the character never seemed like he should be giving advice and even when he did it was kind of a short lived moment of clairvoyance, that instantly turned to a shit joke. lol Samo is still a good second choice.
Dynamo
Dynamo - 8/24/2010, 2:46 PM
@ThaMessenger
I can see your reasoning behind it.
What do you think of Donnie Yen as Tein?

You should recast the saiyains with Asian actors and martial artists, they're like the asian version of Kryptonians for crying out loud, lol.
Dynamo
Dynamo - 8/24/2010, 5:33 PM
@Sweetre.
They're more like barbarians. I think you can get away with them being caucasian. As for the earthlings, their race should depend on where they're from. Krillen and Roshi are from the East of the planet while Bulma is from the Western Capital.
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 8/24/2010, 8:38 PM
Love this cast! You just sold me on Gyllenhaal! Biel as Bulma and Jackie Earle Haley as Kami are the only ones I cant see though. Id perfer Djimon Hounsou myself. Also love your pics for the fathers!

I cast Tom Welling as Goku and Ian Somerhalder as Vegeta...
I like the idea of Jon as Vegeta...
Jake G as Goku? NO!
btw,Bale would make an awesome Vegeta
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 8/25/2010, 7:02 AM
@ Dynamo: Cause I want to save him for a Villain. I have several more fan cast I plan on doing. He is my Asian Vegeta. My Lower Budget Goku is Scott Adkins or Jon Foo lol.

@ LEEE: Thanks bro! I figured this would also help with the general Audience. If you saw the show you mite get a better Idea of the characters and why I chose who I chose. Akira Toriyama(the Creator) combined Eastern/Mediterranean/Western Legends to create the concept of DBZ. It was the Spartans that inspired the Saiyans, Superman that inspired Goku, Journey to the West that inspired Dragon Ball.

@ Sweetre15: I Didn't want to go Asian because I thought Goku would be more alien as a Caucasian in the East being raised by a Chinese man. Also as I posted above I wanted to make them look like Spartans Hence, King Leonidas being King Vegeta. But I do have Asian alternates for everyone.

@ OmegaBlack13: That was the Plan. A lord of the Rings approach. But in my script I kind of break down the story of Dragon Ball in the intro with a combined style of The Incredible Hulk Intro and Hellboy 2. Using Animation and actual actors.

@ IncredibleHulk: Both Great but not for this movie. I need heart in the film not just punching kicking and flash. I include the martial artist to push the actors to be better fighters and give better performances. Stunt man that lack in acting tend to be harder to make good actors then to make good actors look act like good martial artist. The Bourne Series, Matt Damon didn't learn any MA he just acted like he did for all the fights. THATS F'N IMPRESSIVE. Good actors make a better movie.

@ GambitAceOfSpades: I like Tom Welling and he does look the part. Problem is he ALWAYS acts far to dramatic and serious for the role of Goku. I Need a balance that I just feel he cant pull. Ian is cool but I can see him as a hero before a villain. Bale in my opinion could play any Saiyan except for Goku lol.

SoItGoes
SoItGoes - 8/25/2010, 10:09 AM
Probably the best fan cast I've ever seen.
Johnathan Rhys Meyers as Vegeta is amazing.

BUT... Jake for Goku = no
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 8/25/2010, 10:34 AM
@ freakybatman: Thank you! I'm glad I got mostly positive feedback for the cast. Yeah Jake's not a Fan fave but I know he can do it. And yeah there was no1 else I would cast as Vegeta unless my budget called for a B rated action kung fu movie lol

Hey man you should do a fan cast for the Freiza saga next.
IncredibleHulk
IncredibleHulk - 8/26/2010, 12:04 AM
@ThaMessenger07: Goku is not that hard to portray. Because he's innocent and child like. Jon Foo can easily portray that.

@Sweetre15: I agree with you sweetre15. The Saiyan race resemble Asian people. And Kryptonian's are more Western.

And Jake Gyllenhaal is too Western, He looks like Mister Satan.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 8/26/2010, 6:35 AM
@ Dynamo: I will, Most likely tonight.

@ IncredibleHulk: Goku is not only Innocent and child like but he maintains that personality while holding the safety of Earth on his shoulders. He is a master, a father, a husband, a friend, and a hero. Jon Foo would never give any of those qualities on screen. And I Really don't think they look Asian. Just because it's an Anime don't mean by default there Asian. They are aliens and they are based on Kryptonians and Spartan, Neither of which look Asian. I believe a Mediterranean look is what they need. If not a heavily mixed culture. But that's just me. Also when I wanted to cast Asian I had Jon Foo as Goku.
IncredibleHulk
IncredibleHulk - 8/26/2010, 7:04 AM
I'm not saying it's Anime therefore they should all be Asian. Son Goku is based on Sun Wukong(JTTW) not Kryptonians and Spartans. Saiyan's have dark eyes and hair similar to Asian's. The Dragon Shen Long/Shenron, Chi/Ki and the entire Dragon Ball theme are mostly East Asian influenced. However there are Western influenced places and characters such as West City, Bulma, Tournament Announcer, Mister Satan, General Blue, General Red, Officer Black etc. It's kinda easy to tell who is Asian based and who is not.

Considering we already have a Caucasian(DBE) version of Son Goku why not try an Asian actor and give them a chance.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 8/26/2010, 8:18 AM
Yes! GOKU is based on Sun Wukong(The Monkey King) & Superman. Dragon Ball is based on Journey To The West.

Goku was found in a Spaceship by an old man who raised him with his values and belief system. He was sent to earth to destroy it which is a deviation because the Saiyans unlike Kryptonians are a Warrior race. Bardock(Gokus father sees the future) and realizes that there planet will be destroyed. So he confronts Frieza with a small group and is defeated. He sees another vision of hi son redeeming the Saiyan race as he dies and sends a Telepathic message to Goku awaking him in the pod. Goku is the Eastern Superman. Not to ention Vegeta and his Team are Clearly a take on General Zod.

As for the Spartans take it's the whole warrior race concept and the weeding out of the weak Saiyans. Also the Assault that King Vegeta as well as the assault that Bardock lead against Frieza was very similar to the fictional/historical takes on the Battle of Thermopylae, even down to the last beam that almost hits Frieza abut he barely doges.
IncredibleHulk
IncredibleHulk - 8/26/2010, 8:29 AM
I can see the similarities on Superman's side and that's about it. But if we would measure on where is Son Goku is based and more heavily influenced. I'd say he's 90 percent based on Asian(Chinese & Japanese).

Just like you said he is the "Eastern Superman". So an East Asian actor should portray him. Not Western.

Anyway I don't want to make this into a debate. I just said my opinion. And I'm not trying to force it on anybody.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 8/26/2010, 10:19 AM
No debate, I actually agree with your choice. Just not for the type of film in mind. I don't see him carrying a big budget epic. But I totally agree. And the reason I chose a Mediterranean look was to stray mid way.
sweetre15
sweetre15 - 8/26/2010, 10:38 PM
@ThaMessenger: Just remember one thing for a big budget vehicle you'd also want to avoid the controversial heat that The Last Airbender got, lol.

Anyway asians could work in a big budget fantasy epic as long as they're right for the part and studios would be willing to take a chance on them my friend. But you could throw in some popular supporting cast members to ensure people go to the theater ala Batman Begins.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 8/27/2010, 6:13 AM
@ Sweetre15: lol good point! The problem for Avatar wasn't the casting, it was the Director. I personally agree with mixed casting, especially with movies that have very diverse/fictional cultures(there is no Fire nation). My Saiyans are definitely all white guys but they have some very Diverse Features. This gives the Saiyans an Exotic look and truly brings out the kind of Perfect Race of warriors look that I aimed for.

I agree Asians can do big budget films and I tend to like a lot of Asian big budget films, Especially the Japanese ones. My problem is a cast of all Asians with a few Caucasians thrown in there seems weird. I cast everybody very carefully and pay attention to detail. Ox King clearly looks white but Chi Chi is definitely Asian. So I choose a mixed Asian actress. I didn't feel that the Saiyans would conveniently launch this child to destroy Earth and make him land in a nation that he fits into. They didn't care lol. Goku is not Asian, hes a Saiyan. lol I believe race is more of an issue for a character like Ryu, who was originally Japanese but was later said by Capcom to be half Japanese and Half Brazilian. In hes a Human so he needs a Race that exist on earth, Luckly Jon Foo already played Ryu and is of mixed Race.

But all Valid Points, I'm just happy I got this many comments. lol I will have up my Frieza Saga Tonight Everyone. So Look Out! ;)
