again pardon my art, I know that she looks very manly :) these are the times that I hope I got half the talent of Ed Benes
To finish off my DC Trinity I came up with this design for Diana. My thoughts about her costume:
Again Wonder Woman’s look is iconic, but still not really practical. It’s really hard to take seriously someone who fights in her bikini.
In coming up with a design, I always try to think of a backstory for the character, why she wears what she wears. To go back in her roots we have to think about Themyscira, what is Themyscira is it an ancient city, a modern city or a combination of both? I opted for the latter, seeing Themyscira steep in tradition but not really behind when in comes to technology. God’s and goddesses might exist in their world but so do modern equipments.
So the design I came up with WW is, or hoping to portray is, something modern with hints of their Greek roots. She wores a less revealing garment and I was thinking of making her vambraces bigger to actually protect her more.
She’s wearing pants and some loin cloth(looking at it now I’m not really sure if I’m happy with that design). I’m also not particularly happy with the reason that she’s wearing those “designs” is because she’s an ambassador to America. I’m not American (I’m not sure what you guys think about it) but I find it kind of offensive to have your flag worn as someone else’s intimate apparels. So in the back of my mind Themyscira and the U.S. have the same fondness of the design, that means they fly similar banners (which is not unlikely because there are several countries who share similar looking flags). I guess which also gave the Themyscirans some kinship with Steve Trevor when he landed on their island, which in turn they allowed Diana to return him to the world of Man.
With the lasso it’s just my preference, I find it more magical to have it behave that way (which I felt like lightning).
So, that’s what Wonder Woman is to my mind back in 2004.
Here’s another design:
This one is closer to her comic design (and still I’m having problem drawing the female form :) )
Here’s another one:
My thoughts here are similar to what I’ve written above. It’s just my Alex Ross phase (but of course not that good).
