There have many deaths throughout Comic Book History and just about as many resurrections. I offer you a list of CB characters that have died and been returned to life, for better or for worse.

Over the next couple of days I will be posting 2 character deaths and resurrections, (one better, one worse) leading up to the two most influential and interesting comebacks. Part 2 coming soon!!!

Both of today's characters have 2 things in common:

1) It was a bad idea to kill them off

and

2) I am glad they were brought back

Alfred Pennyworth (dead 2 years, 4 months)

Died in Detective Comics #328 (June 1964) while saving Batman and Robin and was subsequently crushed by a boulder.

Resurrected as villainous Outsider in Detective Comics #356 (October 1966):

and later returned to normal by Batman in the same issue.

Ruling: Better

While I think that killing him in the first place was idiotic and the way of bringing him back to life was a over the top, I have to say that, over all, it was an interesting twist. I am glad Pennyworth is with us again today. Without Alfred Pennyworth Batman would have crossed the line long ago and fallen into the dark abyss never to return. Alfred is Bruce Wayne's moral compass, father-like figure and friend. He is his closest confidant. Without Alfred, who knows what Bruce would have become?

Sabretooth aka Victor Creed (dead 4 years, 5 months)

Beheaded by Wolverine with the Muramasa Blade, a sword that blocks the healing factor, in Wolverine vol. 3, #55 (July 2007).

Later in Wolverine vol. 4, #20 (December 2011) Creed is somehow alive again. It has still not been explained (as far as I know) as to how he survived his supposed unrecoverable and grisly death.

Ruling: Worse

I love Sabretooth. He is the Wolverine Logan could be if he was pushed and fully embraced the animal. The dynamic between Creed and Logan is legendary and mysterious. To kill him off was a bad move on Marvel's part. But to leave him dead just have him come back to life after such a cataclysmic and emotional story arc with little to no explanation as to how he survived is, in my opinion, cheap. I am glad he is alive again though and will continue to be the bane in Wolverine's side that he was created to be.

@FRIG: I know! Marvel hasn't even explained it. He is just back.

@dellamorte: Thanks. I plan to use those in later articles.

The explanation of Sabretooth's resurrection is coming in the next story arc of Wolverine.

Although in a recent story, Wolverine went up against group of people called the Black Hand. All the members had some reason for hating Logan, so they lured him to a mansion and forced him to run a gauntlet and fight a bunch of deranged wackos who ended up being Logan's own kids. Point is, one room in the mansion had a bunch of glass display cases that had all kinds od artifacts from Wolverine's past in them. One had Sabretooth's decapitated head in it. Whether that was just a nod to the story, or if it has something to do with Victor's resurrection is still to ne seen.

The best has to be when Superboy punched a hole in reality and it resurrected Jason Todd as a result. Did I say best? I meant worst.

@dellamorte: I agree. I will touch on that a little more when I post the next set. And BTW, I know I will regret asking but, I get the GG I healing factor/euro-trip thing, but what is GG II (BND)?

That one is coming Corndog....as well as Aquaman, Superman, Captain America, Barry Allen, Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Hawkeye, Kilawog, Human Torch, Jackel, Kang the Conquerer, MODOK, Mysterio, Betty Ross, Cable, Clolussus, Doc Ock, and many others!

Without Bucky back, there'd be no Winter Soldier. and the world would be a shabbier place.

Character death... just doesn't mean anything in comics.

Captain America and Bucky were the only deaths I cared about in comics, and their resurrections were handled really well, at east Marvel let them stay dead for a while.

So, to make this absolutely clear, Sabertooth could survive getting his head chopped off IF it were not done with the Muramasa blade??? Serious question...

good question @MoonDoggyX. I believe, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but in the Ultimate universe, Wolverine cut Sabretooth's head off using his claws but apparently some tendons or skin or something were still attached, so he eventually healed. how his head ended up back on his neck though, is another question....

@dellamorte: Ah, I see. I will go into that soon. Not today though. More pressing matters to attend to.

@Run and Moon: Ultimate universe is irrelevant IMO. It's always been the stated that the only thing that could truly kill Wolverine would be the severing of his noggin. The same was alluded to for Sabretooth. But it has also been shown that Wolverine and Sabretooth's healing factors are incredibly strong and sometimes seem to increase in healing rate, so I guess Logan thought to make sure there was no chance of Creed's return, he used the Blade.

Make sense?
