The Los Angeles Times reports that while Stallone is returning in front of the camera as aging mercenary Barney Ross, he won't be stepping behind it. Sly is reportedly meeting with prospective directors, however, indicating that he still has a large creative role and investment in the success of the "Expendables" brand.
Frankly, we're excited about the idea of a new director coming in and taking aim at the hard-R action franchise, even if we're sad to see Stallone step aside. After the jump, check out a few of the directors we'd gladly accept in his place.
Michael Bay
The king of explosions, destruction, mayhem and explosive destructive mayhem getting to work with action icons like Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren — honestly, it feels like a no-brainer to us.
James Cameron
As the director of "Aliens," the first two "Terminator" films and "True Lies," Cameron's cred as a hardcore action filmmaker is second to none. Our only reservation is that we want to see those "Avatar" sequels, but if he could get in on a quick-and-dirty "Expendables" shoot, we'd be thrilled to have him aboard.
Quentin Tarantino
We know the man can shoot his way through violent masterpieces, but even "Kill Bill" pales in comparison to the bloody potential of an "Expendables" sequel. With Tarantino behind the lens and, we'd hope, pitching in on the script, these rough-and-tough heroes would be rougher, tougher and chattier than ever before.
Shane Black
He's going to have his hands full with "Iron Man 3" fairly soon, but before that, we think the "Lethal Weapon" creator and "Predator" star could knock "The Expendables 2" out of the park. If nothing else, the carnage and mayhem that Stallone's universe offers in spades would make the explosive "Iron Man" franchise a walk in the park for Black.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Stallone can't direct the "Expendables" sequel? No problem—get his old pal Schwarzenegger on board to co-star and direct. The Austrian Oak has already mentioned Clint Eastwood as a man to emulate in the later years of his career, and a move behind the camera is a logical step in that direction. "The Expendables" could very well be Schwarzenegger's glorious comeback.
