FANTASTIC FOUR: Rumored Reed Richards Actor Penn Badgley Breaks Silence On Casting Rumors

You star Penn Badgley has broken his silence on the persistent rumours he will play Mister Fantastic in Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot, but is he denying or teasing his involvement in the movie?

After Fox's three Fantastic Four movies, we're almost a little surprised there's so much excitement for the upcoming reboot. Then again, the franchise is back in the hands of Marvel Studios and if anyone can do this team justice, it's them.

The furore surrounding who will play each member of the group is as wild as when Spider-Man was being cast, but one rumoured top contender for Reed Richards, Penn Badgley has taken himself out of the running...we think? It's hard to say for sure, but the actor finally addressed the rumours in an interview with Josh Horowitz

Asked if he's stepping into a superhero costume in the near future, Badgley responded: "Well...no, I can’t reveal that. Neither confirm nor deny. No, I don’t know what to say about that. No. You know, it’s possible that I have [met Kevin Feige], but not in this context. I might have met him years ago and I wouldn’t, you know, I’m not sure."

Pushed on whether there's any smoke to the fire he's playing Reed Richards in Fantastic Four, the actor appeared to deny that it will happen. However, he did so in a very tongue-in-cheek manner!

"You know, where there’s smoke, there’s not always fire. It actually takes a lot to get from smoke to fire. I’ll say that. It takes a lot...That’s not how this fire gets lit. this fire gets lit by Kevin - I don’t even know how to pronounce his name...I’m clearly not in a Marvel movie."

Later adding that he was more of a Spider-Man and Spawn fan as a kid, this is either Badgley having fun or protesting way too much (as Paul Rudd did once upon a time after being asked if he was Ant-Man). With so many Mister Fantastic rumours doing the rounds right now, it would be pretty hilarious if the You star has already been cast as the genius superhero.

Time will tell, but Marvel Studios really needs to hurry up and announce each member of Marvel's First Family. Unfortunately, we have a feeling that won't happen until Comic-Con.

Fantastic Four is set to be released on February 14, 2025.

He would be great in the role

He’s playing extremely coy. He’s definitely been coached

@MyCoolYoung - Something weird about this. If you haven't had any talks then would you reply with "I can't reveal that"?

Like, if you hadn't had any talks wouldn't you just say, "Nope I haven't been approached" or something like that?

And if you aren't playing a super hero or specifically Reed Richards, would you just say "Nope. I'm not playing that character".

The only time you would need to play coy the way he does is if there's definitely been talks about a super hero role that you can't reveal.

The only reason Badgley was ever rumored rumored is because of his role in Netflix's You as a manipulative smart asshole and ScreenRant's clickbaits trying to portray 616 Reed as the same.

F#ck everything about this.

@DrReedRichards - or, here’s another wild theory

He’s a good working professional actor?
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 2/9/2023, 3:38 PM
@Se4M4NSt4ine -

So is Bill Hader or Jon Hamm, for another 616. So is JGL or Eddie Redmayne, if they go the 1610 route.

But these are too likable for a narrative of retconning a genius into an abuser.

@Vigor -

I don't like the narrative behind this particular typecasting. My isssue5is not with Badgley by any means. It's with thinking of Reed's ideal actor being someone who's played an asshole.

I'd have the same kind of reaction if they brought up, say, Jamie Dornan from 50 Shades.

@DrReedRichards - Well if an actor has played very well something very similar to what you need, is it that absurd to consider him, or does it need to always be some out of the box option nobody considered?
FilmGuy7878
FilmGuy7878 - 2/9/2023, 4:41 PM
@DrReedRichards - Reed isn't an asshole by any stretch (pun intended). He's obsessive over his work but his work doesn't turn him into a bad person, it just causes him to make some carless decisions from time to time.
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 2/9/2023, 4:46 PM
@Urubrodi -

"...if an actor has played very well something very similar to what you need..."

My point exactly. Why would Matt Shakman, Sarah Finn, Kevin Feige, anyone from the MCU's creative team, or even any fan for that matter want Reed to be portrayed as anything close to that formentioned signature role of Badgley?
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 2/9/2023, 4:47 PM
@FilmGuy7878 -

Bingo. He might not be the warmest of characters with how aloof he tends to be, but he's never malicious. At least 616 Reed, since the Maker from the Ultimates is more or less the exact opposite.
BraxtonHicks

@DrReedRichards - Eddie Redmayne for evil Reed Richards' The Maker.

I know, right? I think either he or Joseph Gordon Levitt could pull it off.
FilmGuy7878
FilmGuy7878 - 2/9/2023, 4:53 PM
@DrReedRichards - The Maker would be cool to see if they are gonna do the Council of Reeds in the future.
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 2/9/2023, 4:59 PM
@FilmGuy7878 -

I don't think Maker and the Council of Reeds are particularly necessary for each other, but the Council could also be a neat way for them to bring back Gruffud or Teller from the previous movies.
FilmGuy7878
FilmGuy7878 - 2/9/2023, 5:00 PM
@DrReedRichards - That is true or hear me out, Gruffud for Doom.
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 2/9/2023, 5:05 PM
@FilmGuy7878 -

That would be interesting, but I'm still rooting for Adam Driver to get the part. Either he, or Nikolaj-Coster Waldau. My dream pick though would be Javier Bardem, but I doubt he'd be interested.
FilmGuy7878
FilmGuy7878 - 2/9/2023, 5:07 PM
@DrReedRichards - Waldau would be amazing as Victor. I have a feeling they want to save Javier for someone much bigger, maybe Galactus?

CaptainFlapjaks - 2/9/2023, 5:13 PM
@DrReedRichards - javier bardem is still my pick for bane but he would be an intimidating doom for sure.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 2/9/2023, 5:13 PM
@DrReedRichards - The only time I can ever think of Reed being an outright asshole is back in the old 60's and 70's comics where he smacked Sue or was constantly talking down to her. But that's also one of those weird old-school comics things that are seen as really [frick]ed up now, but not so much back then. And I really doubt they do anything even close to that in the movie.

I'm not the biggest F4 fan and haven't read tons of their comics, but everything I know of Reed is that he's one of the nicer heroes in Marvel, outside of always being head down in his work.

@FilmGuy7878 -

Galactus, One Above All, the voice of Eternity, lots of Godlike MCU roles he could play well with his stature and booming voice.
FilmGuy7878
FilmGuy7878 - 2/9/2023, 5:15 PM
@DrReedRichards - Yeah totally! I remember seeing a lot of people wanting Liam Neeson to play Galactus at one point in time.
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 2/9/2023, 5:18 PM
@CorndogBurglar -

If you're referring to that slap on Sue when she was during her Malice days, it's been taken so many times out of context that it honestly tires me. Plus, it's like you said, those days were not the best in general, and there'd been no greater victim on page for Marvel than Hank Pym. They made him legit irredeemable with how he was written to treat Janet.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 2/9/2023, 7:48 PM
@DrReedRichards - I agree Reed isn't an asshole. But I also don't think the ideal version is good through and through. My ideal version of Reed is likable, fatherly, but also obsessed with the idea of furthering the limitations of science as we know it, sometimes at the expense of the now.

Reed is a "greater good" kind of guy, but he's not always "present" if that makes sense. He definitely wouldn't be worthy of lifting Thor's hammer.

I've said this in another thread, but I think the perfect version would be a less campy version of Jeffrey Combs in Reanimator, mixed with just enough Danny Tanner to hold the family together.

Agreed, mate. It's why I described him in one of my previous comments as often aloof but never malicious.
