Simon Kinberg Discusses The "Disappointing" FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot
We've heard from various other parties that were involved with bringing Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot to the screen, and now the movie's screenwriter/executive producer Simon Kinberg shares his thoughts, and ponders what went wrong with the Marvel adaptation...
Is it fair to say nobody liked Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot? Obviously some disliked it more than others, and many felt it had its share of redeeming features, but you'd be hard pushed to find anyone who would argue that it was completely successful... and that includes the movie's writer and EP, Simon Kinberg.
In an interview with THR, Kinberg was asked to outline where he felt things went wrong with the production, and began by stating that he didn't believe there was "a direct correlation between the process and the product", and that he'd worked on troubled shoots where the film turned out great, and easy, joyous shoots that yielded a finished product that was lacking.
"I haven't really done a full diagnosis. It was a hard movie to make, but I've made a lot of hard movies. I do think that there is a great Fantastic Four movie with that cast. But there's so many different elements that need to come together perfectly. It's like a collaboration between all these strangers. And if there's a few things that don't go right, it's hard to recover from. I went straight from that into X-Men: Apocalypse. I haven't had a lot of time to decompress. I'm obviously disappointed with the way it turned out."
And what about that widely publicized Tweet from the movie's director? Does Kinberg feel Trank's rant against the studio's interference wound up hurting Fantastic Four's performance at the box office?
"Honestly, I have no idea. I've had other movies not work before. For whatever reason, that movie not working became very public — and that was hard because you put a lot of time and effort and love into everything you do, and I really love a lot of people on that film and felt really close to the actors. Those are the guys whose faces are on the poster and are the most exposed. I hope we get to make more movies with them. But it was disappointing."
What do you guys think - could anything have been done to salvage the film? Will you be revisiting and reevaluating Fantastic Four when it hits home release? More at the link below.
