BOX OFFICE: Sam Raimi's OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL Set For A $70 Million+ Weekend

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oz: The Great and Powerful is well on its way to earning an impressive $70 million this weekend in North America. With no serious competition (as expected, The Wizard of Oz prequel has left Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Slayer DOA with a 67% drop that resulted in a paltry $2.5 million take yesterday), some analysts are predicting that the Disney film could gross upwards of $80 million. The movie earned $24.1 million yesterday, and it looks set to become the third-best March opening of all time after last year's The Hunger Games and Alice in Wonderland the year before that. With a B+ CinemaScore and a budget north of $300 million, Disney will now be keeping an eye on how Oz: The Great and Powerful performs internationally before a sequel is guaranteed! "Oz The Great and Powerful" imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz.
