Conan the Barbarian Producer Fredrik Malmberg "There Are Some Scenes That Will Make You Cringe"

Check out what producer Fredrik Malmberg had to say about the differences between this Conan the Barbarian and the original 1980's films.

Conan the Barbarian producer Fredrik Malmberg had some very interesting remarks to share with Fangoria about the upcoming film. First he discusses why we will once again see a Conan origin story in the movie. He then goes on to point out some things that he feels, separates this version of Conan from the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger films so many of us are familiar with.

On telling the origin of Conan...

“If we get Conan right, we have re-established the franchise and we can then go ahead with adaptations of the original stories. First we have to get the Conan character into people’s minds. He’s a complex character, and I believe we, like [1982 film director John] Milius, had to tell some kind of origin story. Fans don’t think that’s necessary, but we still have to please the studio system and the executives and marketing. And you see, the majority of the audience will not know where Conan comes from. They never saw the Milius movie. We need to create something that today’s audience will appreciate. ‘Give the people what they want but not what they expect’ is the mantra.”

On distancing the film from the previous Conan movies...

“We respect [that feature] for what it was, but we capture Howard’s Conan better. We really wanted this one to stand on its own. There were even a couple of actors from the original who came and wanted to do little parts, but we had to say no.”

“Jason just feels very contemporary, yet he fits the description that Howard wrote for Conan much more to me than Arnold [Schwarzenegger]. When you see Jason, you’ll say, ‘That’s Conan.’ Better than that walking special effect.”

“It’s a more gritty, realistic violence. This is a world where a sword cut is fatal and heads fly and arms get cut off. Marcus has an extreme visual knowledge. There are some scenes that will make you cringe. Then there are others where we said, ‘Maybe that’s a little too dark, and we’ll put that on the extended version.’ ”

Marcus Nispel's Conan the Barbarian featuring Jason Momoa, Rose McGowan, Stephen Lang, Ron Perlman, Rachel Nichols, Leo Howard, Saïd Taghmaoui and Bob Sapp is set to hit theaters August 19th.

Hawksblueyes: Personally, I can't wait to see this movie. Everything I've seen about this film indicates that it stays closer to Howard's writings than the original films ever attempted to.

"There are some scenes that will make you cringe."

I'm sure there are. The trailers make me crindge.

"It’s a more gritty, realistic violence"

Yes; a little kid slaying a tribe of warriors and bringing their heads back is very realistic.

This guy better be ligit with his assessment of the movie- he better not be b*******ing us to get us into the theater sets, because if he expects this to be the 1st of many other Conan movies and it turns out NOT to be as he says here in this interview, the others that follow will crash and burn. Besides there's nothing too dark in Hyboria. In the Dark Horses comic version of Conan ,I've seen the dude cleave guys in half vertically-I ain't squirming.Hey Fredrik, it's 'R',just put the stuff in there and don't worry about it.

this movie is not even written to be good, literally. the overseas market is so important that story and dialogue have to take a back seat to action and "universal appeal" to boys in other countries who don't speak english. so lame. they didn't even get the logo correct; the sword should be going through the lettering, not behind it completely. lame.

1982 version much better. remake bad movies, not good ones hollywood clowns.

Jason Momoa does look like Conan should look. Much more than Arnold. This movie looks fantastic from every single teaser I have seen. My only concern so far is Ron Perlman. There is something about his voice or maybe it his manner or tone of speaking...whatever it is called...that just sounds off. When I watched the teaser scenes with him addressing the clan it felt really odd and out of place for a man that sounds so very very white to be part of a barbarian horde.

Has anybody ever seen those old black and white printings with Jusko covers??? Momoa has the look of Conan to a t! IT IS VERY DARK IN THIS WORLD! This needs to be a gore fest to be accurate and we all know it. I am ready for some serious blood and boobs! I think it will be great for what it is.It is not "The Color Purple" remember that.

brewtownpsych@ apparently you haven't seen the red band trailer. This is Howard's Conan, not some lame sluggish oaf and world that they threw together and called it Conan. It is Hyboria brought to life. You do know what Hyboria is, right?

Neo@ A kid slaying a a band of warriors, severed heads and arms is realistic violence to Howard's Conan. ;-) Who wants to see sword fights whee someone gets hit with a sword and it scratches them? That isn't realistic violence, especially in the barbaric world of Hyboria.

Ranger14 Ok, I get it; you will like the movie no matter what. But you don't have to stop and address every single non-flattering comment against it. Dude made a remark about realism and I simply pointed out the irony. It's not a big deal.

The soundtrack can sometimes make or break a movie, and CtB had one of the greatest film scores ever. This movie would have much less of a challenge winning over fans of the original movie if it used that score. WIthout it the chips are already stacked against it. Arnold really owned that role.

I don't like the modern music of the original. The musical scores of the old Conans were seriously better.
NeoBaggins

superpooper Music is a major component to a movie. People think I'm crazy when I say that STAR WARS wouldn't be as popular today if it didn't have a classical score. Music demands the tone and represents quality. So, when you slap a generic rock guitar to a supposedly epic adventure to your trailer, your saying hey, we don't give a [frick]. You shouldn't either.

AlexDeLarge87 - 8/5/2011, 2:28 AM
hawks@ Agree with you! Cant wait!:)

The rock music is hopefully just for the trailers. I bet the movie itself has a totally different score.

"Yes; a little kid slaying a tribe of warriors and bringing their heads back is very realistic"

You are aware that said kid is CONAN, yes? Besides, he's a 12-year-old barbarian, not some 9-year-old inner city kid.

"I don't know, but I don't specially like this arrogant way to distant themselves from the first movie."

It isn't any more arrogant than the way the first movie distanced itself from the source material.

"Too dark so you put it in the extended version? You [frick]ing kidding me? Put it in the movie pussy."

I'm sure he wanted to, but there are 11 other producers on this film, you know. Some of whom wanted to make Conan PG-13.

"Conan is the damnedest bastard that ever was.

He got a long black mane of hair, crystal blue eyes.

He’s a fighter, born on the battlefield. To him, combat’s a way of life. It’s all he’s ever known, all he ever wants to know!

He’s no soldier who was taught to fight. To him fighting’s an instinct, it’s a part of him.

Like his legs, his arms, his chest, his bull neck.

And believe me, he don’t take it from nobody. He’ll fight man, beast, devil or god.

And when those women feel those tree-trunk firm arms around their waist, they melt like butter on a hot skillet."

Aside from not having blue eyes, Momoa's Conan fits this description better than Arnold's Conan who was trained as a samurai gladiator.
