Since Marcus Nispel’s new Conan film received the green light to begin production, many fans of the original Conan books, comics and films have been on the fence about supporting it. When actor Jason Momoa was announced as the man who would next portray the Cimmerian warrior on screen, fan approval seemed to spiral downward. The film did land a solid supporting cast, made up of Ron Perlman, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan and Rachel Nichols; which has helped some fans hold their judgment until footage is released.

Today we have our first look at a Conan set from Bistriza, Bulgaria, courtesy of OperationKino.net. Though none of the cast members are showcased in the stills, it does give us a feel of the film's overall tone:

No official synopsis for the film has been released by Lionsgate Entertainment, but Conan is scheduled for release sometime in 2011.

soperman @ Stop saying "FIRST" then lol! : D

Damn couldn't give too [frick]s about this movie (and I'm a big fan).

Ruined before they even started filming picking STARGATE BOY for the role!

I'm sure he's a nice guy but hell i can't see him carrying a movie anyways, let a lot this one?!?

How long we been waiting for a CONAN movie, and we end up with this?

Anyway, all the power to him for landing the legendary role!!

It's looking good. Still not sure about Momoa, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. It's hard to compete with the Schwarz in his prime...

Unfortunately for us in California, the Schwartz is strong with us. If I didn't think it'd be insulting, I'd say, "May the Schwartz be with you."

Hopefully, with the advent of The Expendables or the end of his term in November (that is to say, January), he'll return to what he knows best.

Wow. Exciting stuff, lol! :P

Seriously though, I'm not a Conan fan but if these represent the tone and feel of the movie then I guess it'll be pretty drab and bland! I'm with LEE on this one! :)

My biggest problem with this movie as a HUGE Conan fan myself is simply the dditions to the back story. I don't see why they feel the need to add so much as a father and the other BS that I've read in the plot synopsis. I would be much more optomistic with this even with Mamoa if they were making any attempt to stick to the source. It worked pretty well in various spagetti westerns and others to not have a detailed background on a character, in fact some of the best stories of many genres don't even bother.

It's unfair to blame Momoa for the downward spiral when the leaked script and casting sheet did so much damage for two months before Momoa was announced. Once it was clear the story was genuine, just about every Robert E. Howard fan on the web lost any faith whatsoever in the project. Momoa was just the straw that broke the camel's back, and got the casual fans who didn't know much about REH against the film.

If Momoa was in a film with a different director, crew and script, most Howard fans would be willing to sit on the fence: with Nispel at the helm and the guys from Sahara writing the story, there's no chance.

Hard to compete with Arnold? Momoa is a way better actor than Arnold has ever been. I don't get all the hate for Momoa. I am staying optimistic about the movie until we see how Momoa looks. I read every Conan book as a youngster, but never did the comics. I am very cool with Momoa as long as he has beefed up a little. 15-20 lbs would be sufficient for me. Considering Patrice Louinet is cool with everything, that gives me a good deal of comfort. No one alive knows more about Howard's Conan than he does.

Yeah I remember Time Bandits. Love Terry Gillian movies.

I recent pic of Momoa may be an improvement but still without the muscles he still looks more like Tarzan to me than Conan.

One possible way to make me like this movie is maybe to have an Arnold Schwarzenneger cameo at the end. Remember the last two Conan films features an aged King Conan brooding before the credits. It would be cool if they retain the tradition-- still with arnie!

According to the source site, they have photos of Conan that they will be posting. Curious to see how they look. I see Conan more like the build of the Conan on that page...muscled and lithe, but not as bulky as Arnold. Howard described him as agile and panther-like, so that doesn't compute with big and bulky to me.

I have never understood the love fest for Arnold. He's a blah actor. The only thing he had going was his physique, which gave him a physical presence on screen. He still couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. That being said, I enjoyed Arnold for what he was. I never watched one of his movies expecting an Oscar-worthy performance, just some kick-ass action
