Eddie Redmayne's Newt Scamander Will Not Be The Focus Of Future FANTASTIC BEASTS Sequels

Despite being the center of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, it seems Newt Scamander isn't intended as the main character of the new franchise. Some SPOILERS ahead...

Audiences were introduced to a whole different world of magic in J.K. Rowling and David Yates' Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them last weekend. The introverted Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his case of magical creatures thrilled at the box office and opened up a whole new side to the world of Harry Potter.

Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD

The surprise revelation of the film was that American Auror Percival Graves (Colin Farrell) was actually a disguise for the evil Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). As Harry Potter fans know, the dark Wizard has a very important role in the backstory of Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, who has been confirmed to appear in the upcoming sequels. As it turns out, the tale of the two Wizards is set to become the story's focus, with Newt taking a step back.

I don't think [Newt will be at] the heart of all of them," producer David Heyman told Cinema Blend. "I think he'll be part -- so will Tina, Queenie and Jacob -- will be part of the next one." When asked who the focus would shift to instead, Heyman replied with "[Dumbledore] and Credence and Grindelwald. I think they will be the main players."

The inclusion of Credence (Ezra Miller) is interesting, as the final act of the film supposedly saw the character meet his demise. However, according to Heyman, there was a scene removed from the final cut that showed Credence to be very much alive. "We actually had a scene, which we cut, which was Credence going to a boat, to get on a boat somewhere else. But we cut that, because we didn't want to have it be such an, 'Ahhh, here we go.'"

Are you excited to see the young Dumbledore and Grindelwald square off in future sequels, or would you have preferred Newt as the series lead? Let us know in the comments!

There are growing dangers in the wizarding world of 1926 New York. Something mysterious is leaving a path of destruction in the streets, threatening to expose the wizarding community to the Second Salemers, a fanatical faction of No-Majs (American for Muggles) bent on eradicating them. And the powerful, dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, after wreaking havoc in Europe, has slipped away…and is now nowhere to be found.

Unaware of the rising tensions, Newt Scamander arrives in the city nearing the end of a global excursion to research and rescue magical creatures, some of which are safeguarded in the hidden dimensions of his deceptively nondescript leather case. But potential disaster strikes when unsuspecting No-Maj Jacob Kowalski inadvertently lets some of Newt’s beasts loose in a city already on edge—a serious breach of the Statute of Secrecy that former Auror Tina Goldstein jumps on, seeing her chance to regain her post. However, things take an ominous turn when Percival Graves, the enigmatic Director of Magical Security at MACUSA (Magical Congress of the USA), casts his suspicions on both Newt…and Tina.

Now allied, Newt and Tina, together with Tina’s sister, Queenie, and their new No-Maj friend, Jacob, form a band of unlikely heroes, who must recover Newt’s missing beasts before they come to harm. But the stakes are higher than these four outsiders—now branded fugitives—ever imagined, as their mission puts them on a collision course with dark forces that could push the wizarding and No-Maj worlds to the brink of war.

I feel this decision was made after it didn't perform as high as they hoped so they got worried and decided to just go the fan-favorite character route...which is sad as Newt is an interesting character

@Armageddon26 - A good theory, but I think it was made before the film was released. Rowling changed her mind about the story direction which is probably why it was expanded to five films.

"I think, when you realise what story we're *really* telling, you'll understand that it can't possibly fit in one movie!"

@MattBellissimo - I agree. Rowling had an idea for a trilogy, but then she saw the opportunity to write a better story with the focus on Dumbledore, which is what people would rather have.

I honestly hope that after the fifth film, they do another trilogy or more focusing on the origin of Hogwarts and how Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin were best friends who helped create the most beloved school in fiction but ended up betraying each other and nearly destroying each other.

@Kr08 - .....would've rather seen that over Fantastic Beasts, tbh.

@Armageddon26 - actually I don't think the decision was made after it didn't perform as well as they'd hoped. After all, the script for Fantastic Beasts 2 has been finished for almost 2 months now. And besides, they wouldn't be able to make a decision that big on a dime.

@Kr08 - Eh, that is almost what we will have in here? Like Albus and Grindelwald, betraying each other and fighting each other...

I would love for Credence to be like this source of power or maybe a link to Albus dead sister.

@AleSir19 - Actually, no. The Dumbledore and Grindelwald story is more the Sasuke and Naruto storyline if Naruto was gay and in love with Sasuke.

The storyline between Godric and Salazar is more Anakin and Obi-Wan, or Michael and Lucifer.

@MattBellissimo - Yes, that is clearly what i think when they announced what this movie was reaññy about.

It didnt make sense, after this new saga ends, we will see Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them like the odd introduction for Grindelwald and Credence.

It is clearly odd, but what can i say? They needed this movie for reasons?

@MattBellissimo - agreed...plus I couldn't stand his character. He didn't make any sense to me. Seemed really out of place. As well as the min female lead. (Can't remember her name)

@MattBellissimo - Nah, I know this whole story has been in place, and while Newt was just kind of thrown into the actual plot of this one the film ended with the possibility of him being either more ingrained moving forward, but I mean the decision for him to no longer be the CENTRAL character may have been a decision influenced by this first week

@Armageddon26 - I think the true purpose of this first film was world building as in introducing the MUCSA and the idea of an Obscurial. I feel the obscruial concept will play a major part of the Dumbledore /Grinderwald relationship. Dumbledore sister I believe now was an obscurial; in the book she repressed her magic and it would violenty burst out killing her mother. This fits the description of an obscurial.

I am suprised that Newt, Queenie and Tina arent going to be major characters for the next films; I assumed we would be seeing the Grinderwald conflict mainly from their perspectives. However Im not suprised that the story as awhole is focusing on the conflict; I never understood why they would make a triology of a man capturing fanatsic beasts.

@Kr08 - I would love an series focused on the Founders of Hogwarts. However, I would love to see Voldemorts first wizarding war. It would be great to see the Order face of against Voldemort. I think Ralph Fiennes could easily return as Voldermort just because how extreme the make up is it wont matter that he has aged.

I would love for Eva Green to play a young Bellatrix. Not beacuse she is Tim Burtons new Helena Bohnam Carter. But because she is a great artist and there was a scene in Penny Dreadful were she was dressed in black and had her hair up and it looked extactly like her.

I worried they will attempt the adapt the Cursed Child. I hated the script book. The whole plot was like fan fiction SPOILERS. Why would voldemort have a child; he truly fought himself immortal, why would he risk a successor. Additionally, having Bellatrix as the other makes now sense; would the Malfoys relase she was preganant and had given birth before the battle Hogwarts. She also was dosging spells with ease when the Trio were attempting to flee the manner.
