Expecting A Third THE HOBBIT Movie? Think Again!

Despite rumours circulating the San Diego Comic-Con that Peter Jackson and Warner Bros. are planning a third The Hobbit movie, that definitely won't be the case. Or will it? Well, the studio MIGHT just be considering splitting the second film in two, despite denying it. Read on for details.

Variety reports that despite rumours running rampant around the floor of the San Diego Comic-Con that Peter Jackson was planning to announce plans to helm a third The Hobbit movie, these claims are NOT true. A studio spokesperson told that site that there are, "no planned or surprise announcements," and that, "The plan was always for two." However, they offer the theory that a third film would not be at all far-fetched. Early on in the development of the adaptation, there was talk of a third film being added in order to better bridge the gap to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. With a budget of around $500 million for both The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, it wouldn't be a huge surprise if the studio split the latter in two in a similar style to the final Harry Potter movie. There are various other reasons (mostly financial) why adding a third picture would make sense, although the site has been told that Jackson was left with far more footage than expect, so it MIGHT happen...but probably not!

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Make it and I will go most surely. I would even like a prequel to these prequels. Let us learn more of Elendel and Saurons battles. The destruction of the island that caused the Men of the West to come East.

god i hope not, i love the movies, but lets not take one book and make a trilogy out of it. If that happens i think way to much non-tolkien material would be added.

We don't need it.

But if it does ever come out I'll be there... hehehe.

@captainbeta - These Silmarillion stories would rock if made into a series like Game of Thrones. The previous tales are too many and too complex to be in a single movie or even in a trilogy.

It's good that studios and production companies are finally trying to be as faithful as possible to the source material by taking their time. In this process, they make fans happy and they're able to increase their profit. However, it's getting a little ridiculous. It was okay to do it with material that was lengthy and CLEARLY could not have been done justice. Like The Hobbit, The Dark Knight Returns, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, HELL EVEN TWILIGHT! But now, everyone's doing it. Even Hunger Games just announced they're doing it.

What ludicrous about this is that they're splitting a novel that really isn't all that long into two.. which is fine. And now talking about three different parts? I don't think so. Not worth it. Majority of THE HOBBIT can be told in one movie. ALL of it can surely be told in two.

If they want to CREATE a new film using some info from the Silmarillion and original material to help explain more about Middle-Earth and bridge the gap... I wish you well. But just make it a film or two. Don't over do it...

thats money for old rope and to make the hobbit in two was bad enough now thinking of extending it further is a joke.

Two movies is MORE than enough to tell the story of The Hobbit.

Though I love the Lord of the Rings I'm not sure how I feel about that. Just stretching out the story to make a third movie doesn't sound like a good idea unless they really add stuff to bridge the gap and maybe some Slimarrillion history and the other history Tolkien wrote.

They can make it three two hour movies. Or maybe six one hour movies? Release in 2D, 3D and IMAX. Money, money, money, money!

The Hobbit "story" has places where Gandalf disappears to do other things...the appendices explain he's working with the white council (Saruman, Elrond, Radagast, Galadriel) to battle the Necromancer (Sauron). That will be plenty to expand the story into at least two films.

Dude, I wasn't expecting a second Hobbit film. I still don't understand why there are two films. Is "An Unexpected Journey" a completely unexpected original story or based on Chris Tolkien's expansions or what?

@Duke: The Hobbit has two separate titles: There and Back Again and An Unexpected journey. I believe Bilbo referenced this in the LOTR trilogy.

PeterParker1991@ So is this just the novel, but needlessly hacksawed into two very long, self-indulgent films? Because I think Peter Jackson needs to realise that LOTR and The Hobbit are two very different beasts.

Silmarillion happens many hundred years before the Hobbit so they won't be taking material from there

Remember The Lord Of The Rings is main story. Tolkiens tale is of the story of the ring. The Hobbit is just a small part. There is a ton of story that could be told about the Men of Westernese the decline of Gondor's power and the Battle of the Witch-King. The problem is of course it would only be loosely based on what Tolkien wrote. If it wanted to be made into a movie and Peter Jackson was involved is the only way I would be confident it could be done correctly. But there is plenty of material in the Lord of The Rings Universe to make another movie.

Also I started a rumor in Hall H as well that I would be Anne Hathaway's date for the TDKR opening...... it has yet to be confirmed.....

I was unclear at first as to why a third film would be necessary, after thinking about it I realized the positive effect more Middle Earth details would have on readers. I am a writer by hobby doing most of my work while traveling on business for Dish: there is a lot more time in airports and hotel rooms than at home for my passion. When I heard about the upcoming hobbit film, I was excited and subscribed to Blockbuster @Home so I could live in the nostalgia of "LOTR" films before the release of "The Hobbit". Middle Earth keeps drawing me back repeatedly, but above all the fantasy world makes my trips more fun.
