GARGOYLES Creator Greg Weisman Responds To Rumors A Live-Action Movie Is In The Works From Kenneth Branagh

Despite it widely being reported that Sir Kenneth Branagh (Thor) is gearing up to helm a Gargoyles movie, the show's creator Greg Weisman has now debunked those claims. Read on for additional details...

Produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, Gargoyles only ran from 1994 to 1997 but became a cult classic and remains beloved to this day.

The Spectacular Spider-Man showrunner Greg Weisman is widely credited as the show's creator and it's drawn favourable comparisons to other classic animated franchises from the 90s such as Batman: The Animated Series and X-Men: The Animated Series

It may have wrapped up decades ago, but Gargoyles has remained at the front of people's minds. It finally received a continuation in 2006 for a three-year comic book run from Dynamite, though fans remain eager for a proper revival whether it's another animated series or perhaps even a live-action spin on the property.

This past week, it's been widely reported that a Gargoyles movie is in the works from Thor and Death on the Nile director Sir Kenneth Branagh.

Needless to say, the prospect of the filmmaker helming a live-action take on the iconic series was cause for celebration among fans, but Weisman has since taken to Twitter to claim there's absolutely no truth to the news. "I'm thinking," he stated in response to a fan who shared the rumour, "that it's flat-out not true."

While this seemingly puts the story to bed once and for all, it's worth pointing out that Weisman may well be out of the loop when it comes to Disney's plan for the property.

Earlier this year, he was quoted as saying, "I don't own [Gargoyles]. I don't get a dime off of it being on Disney Plus...I've always wanted to do more. I've got a timeline for the show that's 315 pages long. I've got notebooks and comp books full of ideas for it. Spinoff notions and all sorts of things."

Disney likely doesn't have to involve Weisman in whatever they do next (another reason for that WGA strike), but doing so would win over a lot of fans. For now, we're obviously going to just have to wait and see what happens.

Would you like to see a live-action spin on Gargoyles?

Well, we know how respectful Disney is of existing extended IP plans. May as well burn that shit, Greg.

I'd rather have him return to Spectacular Spider-Man.

That’s unfortunate if true.

Branagh is a solid choice if true though a bit “fan-casty” so i can see the “rumor” being nonsense.

I like his directorial work, for the most part.

90s Gargoyles was awesome but I’m scared to see what modern Disney’s writers would do with it today.

The whole creators should get more royalties argument is weird. I’ve worked for fortune 20 companies before. I’ve built content and projects for them that have literally driven millions in revenue. I knew at that time the company owned what I produced. I got my salary, and bonuses and future raises were based on my performance? Why do creatives like this think it’s would be different for them? You work for the company, they own the creation. Your pay is based upon the agreed upon compensation. If you want all the royalties, build it yourself without the bigger company promoting or distributing it. Bigger risk, bigger rewards.

I didn’t think they’d make a gargoyles movie, seems like it could be entertaining but I don’t think it has the fan base.

@slickrickdesigns - It actually has a pretty large fanbase and we have been asking for a live-action movie forever. Even Jordan Peele wanted to make a Gargoyles movie as he's a fan too. Disney has never known what to do with the IP, it ran along with the other Disney shows like Ducktales and it was much more mature than anything else they owned at the time. 1st episode it shows a genocide of the Gargoyles race and the main character Eliza was almost killed by a gun shot by her brother, iirc, by accident in another 1st season episode. It was pretty dark.

Shakespeare, Agatha Christie, Gargoyles. Nah.

To be fair, I know he’s done big box office movies as well but still it’s just seems like dropping down a little bit too far, especially after his masterpiece Belfast.

I have been calling for a live-action Gargoyles movie for years. Years! I loved that show as a kid.
