Gemma Arterton Discusses Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Quantum of Solace's Strawberry Fields discusses all of the "gobsmacking" work that goes into making Disney's latest action-adventure film!

Yesterday, we heard from Jake Gyllenhaal talking about the physical aspects of starring as Prince Dastan in Disney's upcoming action-adventure movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and his preparedness to film a sequel. Now, his Sands co-star, English actress Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace), chimes in.

Arterton, who plays Princess Tamina in the film, says she didn't allow herself to be star-struck when working with Academy Award-winner Sir Ben Kingsley.

"I tend to go into things head first, not really thinking about what I'm doing, which is sometimes better, then going, 'Oh My God, I'm about to act with Ben Kingsley!' because then you're all yourself, and that's what they want ultimately anyway, and you're just another actor working with them on this film ultimately, so that is brilliant, but I don't really get to worry about it. I probably should. (laughs) I probably should when I'm being all cheeky and campy with Sir Ben Kingsley, but no, it's brilliant and an honor."

Like Gyllenhaal, who spent months weight training, practicing Parkour and learning to sword fight, Arterton had to learn some new skills to star Sands.

" I had to learn how to horse ride 'cause I'd never done it before in my life, and it's kind of become a real new sort of passion for me. Pretty much the whole cast went to Spain and learned to horse ride for 2 weeks, which was incredible to have that opportunity and then we all kind of continued it. Then I have to do loads of fighting but there isn't a particular style to my fighting. It's quite wild 'cause she's never really been trained to fight so it's just kind of go 'aaaagh!' like that, but just doing it with some sort of skill. Where I went to drama school I trained in stage combat quite heavily so I had quite a bit of experience before.

"I love all the action stuff. I think I should have really been a stuntwoman. I really enjoy it even though sometimes you think, 'Oh, God, there are actually people that are trained to do this and they're trained to get battered and bruised,' but I've loved doing all of that and the fighting. It's gobsmacking the sets and the costume and the sheer scale of this film and then you're kind of put into into this completely different world and that is really, really fantastic. You don't have to really imagine much 'cause it's there designed right in front of you, and so that's been brilliant as well."

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Mike Newell. The film also stars Toby Kebbell, Alfred Molina, Reece Ritchie, Richard Coyle and Steve Toussaint.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time opens May 28, 2010!

I still haven't seen Quantum of Solace, so I'm not familiar with Gemma's work. She is nice to look at though, plus she knows how to sword fight! That's two pluses in my book!

Doc Ock is in this movie!
After watching the trailer again, they are going to be marketing this movie in a way similar to Pirates. Even the the movie logo looks like the Pirates one... go ahead, compare the two!

@LEEE: Yeah, I loved Royale. I don't know how I missed it. BTW, if you like Parkour action, check out District B13. Not a stellar movie, but some cool "free running" fight sequences.

@Rokrad: Dude, your avatar kills me! It looks like George Burns!

I'm really looking forward to this movie - great article Brent!

Personally, I actually preffered Solace to Royale. :)

What! I love movies..Im a movie buff..thats why when shite is made I speak on it brother! Casino Royale reinvented Bond very successfully. They lost the smarmy git Bond, upped the realism, and basically "Bourned" the shit out of it..and it worked. Solace undid all of that good work, A nonsensical plot, a piss poor villain that was about as useful as a cock flavored lollipop and after Eva Green made the bond girls actual characters, Olga whatsername brings em back to the silly tart that can kick. Sure there were a few decent action scenes but who gives a shit when you don't care what happens to the characters!

@Ror: Casino Royale was a far superior film, but Solace wasn't horrible. I think that's true of most James Bond actors though. The first is always the best. You're right though. Eva Green was the best bond girl ever.

I think this will be a fun, but not deep film. The trailer showed a lot of promise.

I generally preffered Solace all round - I think the pacing was better, the story more interesting and the action far superior!

I haven't seen Solace yet either. I just never had the urge to see it the way I did with Royale.

Gemma looks sultry and she sounds like a tough chick so this looks pretty good. Kind of in the same universe as the Pirates movies. That's the vibe I'm getting.

Casino was the best for me best adaptation of Flemming's novel in my opinion. I agree with Ror if a movie is crap it's crap, Quantum wasnt good for me all that stylised font for the locales etc.

Speaking of James Bond, why do studios nowadays go for reboots instead of just recasting after all we've had 6 bonds and thats been good, then you get talk of rebooting Daredevil and X-men. If a franchise can comeback from the lows of Moonraker why cant CBM's do the same. Hulk doesnt count as recasting for me because even though it started and Brazil and they slightly changed the origin, the fact that people are oblivious to the hulk means that he wasnt captured in public like the first film.
