Lionsgate Courting Simon Beaufoy To Write Hunger Games Sequel

The Hunger Games doesn't hit theaters until March, but Lionsgate is already looking into the sequel, Catching Fire (slated for late 2013). Slumdog Millionaire writer Simon Beaufoy is apparently the studio's top choice to pen the script...

A few months back, Lionsgate set a November 2013 release date for Catching Fire, based on the second novel in the hit Hunger Games series. Now, with the first installment hitting theaters next month, the studio is looking for someone to write the script. Deadline is reporting that, after director Gary Ross declined to write the script (due to post-production on the first film), Lionsgate is courting Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) to pen the script for the sequel. Though negotiations haven't started yet, the studio is pushing hard to get Beaufoy the write the script.

The mini-major is courting Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire scribe Simon Beaufoy to write Catching Fire, the second installment of the three book series that tracks the life and death adventures of Katniss Everdeen. I’m told that Gary Ross, who directed The Hunger Games, is coming back for the sequel. He originally intended to write the outline for the second film and script it with author Suzanne Collins (they teamed to do a lot of writing on the first film), but the post production schedule on The Hunger Games has made that difficult.

Below is the synopsis for Catching Fire...

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

Do you think Beaufoy is a good choice to write Catching Fire? Sound off your thoughts below in the usual place.

The Hunger Games hits theaters March 23rd, 2012, while Catching Fire is scheduled for November 22nd the following year.

I dont know anything about this franchise, and I think the movie looks decent. But I dont feel the movie will get the audience it will need to garner a sequel. It feels like its missing something. But i cant figure out what exactly though

While I don't doubt Hunger Games will make enough money to warrant a sequel, they seem to be jumping the gun a bit. Movie goers are extremely picky these days and the pattern of successful films is all over the place; the films you think will make money...don't and vice versa. Having said that, I'm sure we'll see this sequel in 2013 regardless.

It's not really jumping the gun. This is a trilogy book series that are very very good. The Hunger Games wouldn't be right as a stand alone feature. Some of you are hating on this and haven't even touched the books. The Hunger Games isn't some sappy love story with glittery vampires and 20 foot long werewolves fighting for the affection of a human. The Hunger Games is a lot more captivating and inspiring. I can only hope that the filmmakers do the books justice with the first movie.

I love the hate for a movie that hasn't come out and a book that most haven't read or can't read.

Please do not post the plot for Catching Fire. That ruins in a way what happens in the first book for those who did not read it (or decided to cheat and do the Cliff Notes/Wikipedia reading). You pretty much gave away who came out of the arena which you are not suppose to do. When I talk about Hunger Games to people who have never read it, I am careful to only talk about the first book and not the others so I do not spoil it.

For those who think this is "Twilight like" need to get hit upside the head by NCIS Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs and have sense knocked into you, cause when you read the books, you will be amazed. No glittery, mopy wimpy vampires, this has murder & mayhem in it.

Not to mention those who think it is Battle Royale like and just an American version so don't have to be bothered. This movie is going to rock hopefully they will spend the time on the action.
