THE LORD OF THE RINGS TV Series Gets A Title And Fiery Teaser; Will Chronicle Sauron's Rise To Power

Amazon has announced today that their big budget The Lord of the Rings TV series will be titled The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. As the title suggests, the show is going to follow the forging of the original rings (yes, rings) of power while also following the rise of the villainous Sauron.

"This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics. The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men," showrunners J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay said today. "Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring - but before there was one, there were many...and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all."

Shot in New Zealand, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's first season cost a whopping $465 million to produce. It's also been revealed that it takes place during "the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history," taking us "back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness."

"Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle-earth," the synopsis continues. "From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone."

The massive ensemble cast includes names like Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charles Edwards, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Lloyd Owen, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker, Daniel Weyman and Sara Zwangobani.

We're definitely excited to see some actual footage from the show, but don't dismiss the teaser below as a lazy CG effort. It was all shot practically and suitably sets the stage for this series.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on Friday, September 2.

Excellent! Hope this succeeds. So that one day…in the distant future…we can have a series about the Dark Lord Morgoth and the 1st Age.

@IronGenesis - for some reason I though this was gonna be a show about the first age. Guess that's next

I'm not that familiar with the Silmarillion, but it does sound like it will adapt some stuff from it right?

Also, that title makes so much sense now that I think about.

@bkmeijer - A small part of the middle of its story, apparently - the second age with the fall of Númenor, forging of the rings and the 1st war against sauron we see in the beginning of LoTR.

@bkmeijer - it’s a phenomenal, and phenomenally difficult, read.

It is interesting to see the progression of Tolkien’s prose from the relative childlike ease of ‘The Hobbit’ to almost full-on James Joyce in ‘The Silmarillion.’

The book is an all-encompassing history and narrative of the legendarium. It runs through their creation mythos up until the earlier events of The Third Age (LOTR era). By far the most covered and interesting facets of the book are those that deal with the original dark lord, Melkor, christened ‘Morgoth’ by the Eldar races as ‘the black enemy of the world,’ and his war on all life that he is not able to subjugate. Sauron is but a servant (and a trembling one, at that) to Morgoth’s power.

The second half of the book deals with the primary source material for this series (hence, Bezos’ initial 250+ billion dollar outlay) which is the Second Age and the rise of men through the Kingdom of Numenor and Sauron’s various wars, plural, to continue the philosophical quest for the subjugation of all free peoples.

@Fogs - yeah it seems like this shows will explore the Second Age.

Wouldn't be surprised if they condense the timeline a little too and have Second Age events take place much closer than in the books

@SauronthePower @Waddles - the First age and Second Age stuff does sound interesting to give a try again sometimes, but creation stuff really felt pretty biblically written.

Maybe the creation stuff can be used as an opening for this show, because I think stuff like that can be done great visually

@bkmeijer - yes, the Estate has sold rights to use parts of the Silmarillion. Actors have been photographed with that very book in hand on set in fact

@Waddles - 🤣🤣🤣 so true

@bkmeijer - from what I’ve read in terms of source through One Ring, expect hundreds of years time jumps at times.

@McMurdo - Could also see timejumps between seasons, but think they will try to tell one story within a season.

@McMurdo - The Silmarillion is the ONLY source material for the Second Age mythos that this project encompasses. The legal divide is that The Tolkien Estate only allowed Amazon to use the Second Age material and is not allowed to touch the First Age stuff, which encompasses a far greater (and better) portion of the book.

@Fogs - since we will be seeing the rings forged i wonder if Celembrimbor is in it? 🤔

@RokoVII - Should be, alongside Annatar whom I shall not spoil here.

Finally seeing Círdan is also a nice things, hope it happens.

My guess is they will expand the books a lot, specially with the Witch king backstory in Angmar.
