The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all - a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself - the Dragon Smaug.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. The international ensemble cast is led by Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and Orlando Bloom as Legolas. The film also stars (in alphabetical order) John Bell, Manu Bennett, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Lawrence Makoare, Sylvester McCoy, Graham McTavish, Dean O'Gorman, Mikael Persbrandt, and Aidan Turner.

WHAT?! How was DoS not epic! Maybe not in an obvious way, but it was epic in a more subtle way. Massive fights and destruction don't constitute the grounds for an epic movie.

I have no intention of seeing this film, so can someone tell me whether or not they left in Bilbo's 'Attercop, attercop' shtick?

Also, The Hobbit isn't supposed to be anymore epic than, say, Nickelodeon's adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events. Or the first two Harry Potter films.

The first two HP films were epic.

@ maninfinehat

You sound like one of those people who read the Hobbit and never read any of the surrounding background information Tolkien wrote to bring it into line with the events in Lord of the Rings.

The same people who moaned about it being three films instead of just one because they have no understanding of the amount of events Tolkien wrote in the appendixes for the timeline surrounding the Hobbit in order to lift the narration from a childrens book into a part of a grander scheme on the whole of Middle Earth.

The same people who STILL don't understand that these movies are an adaptation of Tolkiens TIMELINE and not just the mere events of the childrens book!

Ignorance is bliss, knowledge and understanding will set your free. Read the Appendixes for the Tolkien books and go see the movie instead of asking other people to do it for you!

@Ceejay My response to your comment is best conveyed by Godzillafart's:

Most people I know who complain about Jackson stretching out the story into three movies know full well that much of what is included is from Tolkien's notes about event happening at the same time.

However, they also recognize that as a charming stand alone story about discovery and personal growth, The Hobbit is far and away the best thing Tolkien ever created. It's a real shame we won't get to see that gem on the big screen.

When I read The Hobbit, I know it's connected to three other books. I simply prefer to enjoy it on its own terms, just as I would have enjoyed its film adaptation on its own terms had the director allowed me to.
