GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE Already Struggling At The US Box Office

The weekend is far from over, but Friday's box office figures indicate that Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will fail to reach the top spot in the US. It may in fact struggle to even hold on to second place! Hit the jump for details.

Deadline have their early analysis of last night at US box office, and it looks as if Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will struggle to reach the top spot this weekend as it faces off against holdover The Vow. A big budget 3D superhero movie being beaten by a critically panned romantic film is something of an embarrassment for the studio. It's likely that it will only just end up missing out, although one Sony exec told them yesterday that it, "could go higher as the night goes on". The gap is a narrow one, but the first movie made $45M during its opening weekend in the US and over $115M in total, considerably more than the Neveldine/Taylor helmed sequel is expected to earn. Whether this is down to the overwhelmingly negative reviews or the bad word of mouth left over from the last installment is unlear, although one rival exec has their own theory: "Once they started advertising it with Nic Cage, it went downhill."

Here are the early results and predictions also courtesy of the site.

1. The Vow (Screen Gems/Sony) Week 2 [2,958 Theaters]
Est Friday $7.1M (-53%), Est 4-Day Holiday $29M, Est Cume $90M

2. Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance 3D (Sony) NEW [3,174 Theaters]
Est Friday $7M, Est 4-day Holiday $25M

3. Safe House (Universal) Week 3 [3,121 Theaters]
Est Friday $6.5M (-52%), Est 4-Day Holiday $26M, Est Cume $80M

4. This Means War (Fox) NEW [3,189 Theaters]
Est Friday $5.1M, Est 4-Day Holiday $18M

5. Journey 2 3D (Warner Bros) Week 2 [3,500 Theaters]
Est Friday $4.4M (-33%), Est 4-Day Holiday $26M, Est Cume $59M

6. Chronicle (Fox) Week 3 [2,556 Theaters]
Est Friday $2M, Est 4-Day Holiday $10M, Est Cume $53.5M

7. Woman In Black (CBS Films) Week 3 [2,559 Theaters]
Est Friday $2M, Est 4-Day Holiday $8M, Est Cume $46.6M

8. Star Wars 3D (Luscafilms/Fox) Week 2 [2,655 Theaters]
Est Friday $1.9M (-78%), Est 4-Day Holiday $10M, Est Cume $35.9M

9. Secret World Of Arrietty (Studio Ghibli/Disney) NEW [1,522 Theaters]
Est Friday $1.5M, Est 4-Day Holiday $8M

10. The Grey (Open Road) Week 4 [2,107 Theaters]
Est Friday $800K, Est 4-Day Holiday $3.7M, Est Cume $48.6

Box Office Mojo meanwhile have some even more up to date figures which put The Vow at $7.4M and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance at $7M.

Why is it an embarrassment? Those Nicholas Sparks' movies always do good business.

Called it. If it reaches $200 mil worldwide in its total gross I'll be shocked.

It isn't getting beaten by a romantic comedy, its a straight romance movie. And a really, really bad one at that. My old lady forced me to go see the drivel that is The Vow. And it still looks better than this Nic Cage abortion.

think about it this way, girls make the world go round. correct? every girl out there wants to see the vow. correct? every guy wants to get with a girl. guys will do what girls want to get what they want.that is how the vow is killing the box office right now.

Reviewers who viewed an early preview screening at the December 2011 Butt-Numb-A-Thon in Austin expressed negative reaction to the film, with two attendants saying it was worse than the first Ghost Rider film, which one of them stated was made to look like The Dark Knight in comparison with the new film.[33]

Critical reception has been highly negative. The film currently holds a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 59 reviews with the consensus stating: "With a weak script, uneven CG work, and a Nic Cage performance so predictably loony its no longer amusing, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance aims to be trashy fun but ends up as plain trash."[34]

@Supes17: not really, Green Lantern was hugely hyped up and everyone expected it to be good. SoV wasn't hyped up and very few people expected it to be good. So other than the bad reviews and box office failure its not the same.

By the Green Lantern
Comparison I'm saying that they both underperformed at the box office and were ripped apart by critics.

It's deserved. I like Cage, I loved N/T's previous films, but it was just an embarassement to sit through this. FF4 2/Blade 3 type of failure... :(

I have not seen this movie yet. Nick Cage in anything is a huge drag on any movie for me. Not a huge fan of ghost rider anyway.

To me, the best part of this movie was when someone two seats below me made a text message.
CapA
CapA - 2/18/2012, 9:39 AM
The problem is there's no story besides the plot and every action/money shots have been seen in the trailers. It's a drag to sit through the many moments of (stupid) dialogues. The CGI are ok, but wow, Cage really REALLY went over the top on some scenes, the whole theater just disconnected from the movie. VERY disappointed.

@tea,haha im gonna try that tonight, tellin the ol lady that i want some of that sweet huge front bum haha, she will actually prob like it,thanks for the sweet talkin tip

@supes, hell ya i went to see it,its a cbm and its fn ghostrider,it was def a good time!!! It's a comic book come to life, very different from all the others, very fun popcorn flick, wasn't meant to be huge, hell it only had half the budget, but had some very good effects. The rider looked great, cage was only over the top once or twice but not too bad, a lot of small jokes that might go over a lot of peoples heads that were funny(i liked the twinky part with blackout). It kind of reminded me of sam raimis early work with the evil dead/within the woods movies with the camera styles and trippy camera shots. Ill def watch it again!!! If you like action movies with cool effects and psychedelic camera shots go see it.

Not really surprised tbh, watched it last night and while it was a meh experiance, I also felt cheated considering the entire end sequence of the film is in fact the trailer -.-
