Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance's Budget Cut From $135 Million To $75 Million!

It looks like the movie will find it even harder to compete against the likes of Batman 3, Superman, Spider-Man and The Avengers in 2012 as Sony have apparently decided to cut the budget for the movie! Here are the main points of interest courtesy of The Wrap:

"That film had an estimated budget of $110 million, and grossed $115 million domestically, and a total of $229 million worldwide."

"This time Ashok Armitraj’s Hyde Park Entertainment has stepped in to cofinance the project because Sony has so much capital tied up in 'Spider-Man' and 'Men in Black 3' and 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.'"

"The budget has been cut from $135 million to a leaner $75 million, according to a knowledgeable insider."

"Even Nic Cage had to take a serious haircut to reprise Johnny Blaze, down from his $12 million fee to what one knowledgeable insider said was $7 million."

Written by David Goyer and directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, production is set to begin shortly with a release date set for February 17, 2012.

Awww, crap!
I was hoping the Romania location was to trim budget for a better CGI. Now it seems more likely that BECAUSE the budget was badly trimmed that they were forced to go there.

Awwwww.......

The first one was goofy. I don't know where all that $110M went though. Most likely on CGI and some of the actor's paycheck. Some people certainly didn't earn their paycheck on that one, though. Keeping in mind how camp and silly the first one was, I'm not all that excited for another round. That said, $75M is still [frick]in' plenty to put on an entertaining movie. I think "X-Men" had a similar budget. If they use this as an excuse as to why it may fail commercially, then [frick] them up their lazy ass. If movies like "Equilibrium" are anything to go by($20M budget)you don't need big budget to make a good and entertaining movie. You just need to be smart. I know that there are exceptions, like "Spider-Man" and the upcoming "Green Lantern" who need the budgets to fully realize the character but "Ghost Rider 2" doesn't. Like I said, $75M is plenty.

Surely the people making the film got news of this a long time ago.

Aren't they gonna start filming next week?

Less Money = Less Ghost Rider = Were Screwed.

Why doesn't Marvel just by the rights back? If they won't invest in the character they can't think its that valuable. Hope that the Crank guys can still make some crazy action scenes. That will probably be the movies only redeeming quality.

WeaponX - You get 10 point for mentioning Equilibrium.

So there is truth to the report which says that FOX & SONY will rather put out mediocre quality CBM or release them direct to dvd, rather than revert the rights to MARVEL.
Prepare for even more sh!tty movies from these studios guys...

That really sucks. If Cage has any sense he'll walk. I wonder if Sony planned this all along, like a bait and switch to get Cage aboard and then pull the rug?

@Dickel - Its supply and demand. Its all about the amount of revenue the actor is expected to generate. Same with pro-athletes.

$75 million is still a fairly decent amount I suppose, even if it is puny in comparison to other CBM's, but after the first (mostly awful) movie I don't really have high hopes for this anyway. And in all honesty, in a year with The Avengers and Batman 3, I can cope with a crappy Ghost Rider movie especially if it means that the rights will go back to Marvel! :P

Wait, so Nic Cage not only gets to destroy the legacy of Ghost Rider, he gets paid 7 Million to do it? Why not do the same thing as Sony did with Spiderman and Andrew Garfield? Get an up and coming actor, pay him his minimum and have more available for the movie's budget? Just watched GR again, just as terrible as before. The ONLY CBM where I seriously considered walking out of the theatre.

Any movie with "actor" Nic Cage must die. Especially if it is a CBM that would have potential if he was not in it.
