In an exclusive interview with our friends over at
/Film, GI Joe Retaliation director John Chu discusses why he thinks the sequel deserves a chance and how he went from directing films full of dancing and singing to a blockbuster sequel.
Said Chu about the upcoming film:
We are not trying to compete with that movie, we are trying to make a different movie. To me, the GI JOE product means something very different than the filmmakers of the last movie.
During the interview he discusses how playing with GI Joe action figures taught him the art of storytelling, how he believes the first film wasn't true to the GI Joe look and feel that many of us grew up with, Cobra Commander's new look and what it takes to pitch a movie.
He also explains the connection between his Justin Bieber feature and the upcoming action film:
I think my relationship with Paramount, when they saw that[Never Say Never] and we would talk about other movies and we started talking about JOE and I told them how much I loved JOE and what I thought that the JOE franchise could be in an era when we are trying to figure out what it means to be a hero and a leader in the world, for America to be a hero and a leader.
