Yesterday Jon Chu talked about how the Cobra Commander for G.I. Joe Retaliation wasn't the same as the first film Rise Of Cobra. Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura echoed those thoughts when he talked with Moviefon. "No", said Di Bonaventura, "Different guy. Someone else took over, yes.". Part of the reason that Cobra looked the way he did in the first film was that the Director Stephan Sommers thought he looked too much like he was in the Klu Klux Klan. A point that Di Bonaventura agrees with. When asked why they didn't use the version of the Commander that will appear in Retaliation he said production was rushed one the first film and there wasn't enough time to make those kinds of decisions. " Well, you know what. The first one suffered from one thing a lot: which was we had no time to make it. They green lit the movie and we were shooting ten weeks later. That's insane. In this movie we were designing things seven months before we shot. So when you have no time to do anything, your first design comes through. Literally, Storm Shadow's costume, we never saw it until it showed up on set," he said. He also said that Sommers wasn't a fan of G.I. Joe growing up unlike Jon Chu and that the first film served its purpose of starting the franchise up.

Di Bonaventura also addressed how he though they could get fans back after being let down by the first film saying, "Well, it's pretty evenly split. There are some people who feel as strongly (that it was bad) and there are some who feel like, 'Well, it wasn't really that, but I enjoyed it.' Look, you learn a lot the first time out. Did it not take itself seriously enough? Was that part of the problem? Because, for me, these movies are about tone." He also said that its difficult to please every JOE fan because some people grew up with the serious comic books where other grew up with the light hearted cartoon. He went on to praise Jon Chu for knowing the source material and doesn't think fans will be disappointed this time around.

No wonder the film felt so halfassed. Shooting about ten weeks after being greenlit. Reminds me of. Transformers: ROTF

Not only was it rushed, but it was dumber than hell.

I thought the movie was horrible. For the most part it was terribly miscast, save for Snake Eyes, but that's only because Ray Park is perfect for those kinds of characters. I facepalmed with the whole Duke sidestory. The only thing I liked about the movie was the Paris chase.

Nailbiter, is that really hard to believe? Those suits were ridiculous. It takes me all of 5 seconds to come up with a better alternative...ready? DONT DO IT. There. I win.

Joe shouldn't be that hard to do. Make a cool ass "Marine" style war movie, but with the addition of a few ninjas and some high tech gear (NOT MECHANICAL SUITS, DAMMIT!) and voila! Sometimes they take the fact that these movies are based on cartoons and comics as license to go crazy with effects. Joe doesn't need that. When they first came out they were just soldier dolls. All that cartoony crap came later. Just make a realistic war movie with some slightly larger than life characters and you should have it.

Black Hawk Down. Replace the Skinnies as Cobra troops and you have GI Joe. That's what it should've been.

The first film suffered from poor casting mostly. It's supposed to be a little outlandish so I can forgive a lot of the plot. There wasn't anything in the first movie that wasn't consistent with the plots of many a comic or cartoon episode. The acting was far below the quality of even the cartoons though. Quaid is poor, Tatum looks like he's reading queue cards and JGL was ridiculous.

The second failure was the terrible costumes. I mean, whether you watched the show or read the comics or just simply played with the toys and used the cards for bio's we expect the heroes to look a certain way and have certain talents. 10 weeks or not, they should have looked to the source rather than attempt to come up with "better" designs.

Outside of Snake Eyes there was none of that. They all wore crappy black armor. They needed to have the various military uniforms and a better crop of Joes (like Shipwreck and Gung Ho). To have CC and Destro only appear at the end was super weak too (just like Vader in Episode 3).

I think this new movie looks right on the mark and can possibly save or improve the first film depending how they move the plot along.

I'm ok with a director who's not a fan, like Abrams with Star Trek. And some fan directors actually can make the project worse, like Singer with Superman Returns. But it depends on the amount of research they do and amount of respect they give the fandom. My main problem with this one (along with what everyone else mentioned about miscasting and it not being very accurate) was the script. It was so unbelievably *dumb*. More months of prep can't help that unless they change the writing. Worst, most pointless love story ever. And the "I'm angsting because I've never lost a fight" scene was just painful. So he has a point that they were given way too little time. But while time would've helped, I don't know if it would've been enough.
