"Kato" Complains About The Green Hornet Production

Jay Chou, famous in Asia for his pop music, said that he "had to" play Kato in The Green Hornet, but that he was impatient with the production process.

The name Jay Chou may not be very familiar to American audiences yet, but the award-winning musician, singer, producer, actor and director from Taiwan is hoping that a stint in Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry's adaptation of the classic radio serial character The Green Hornet will help put him on the map over here.

Chou will portray Kato, the Green Hornet's trusty sidekick, in the movie, a role that was famously portrayed by Bruce Lee in the '60s TV series. In a recent interview, Chou said that the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Lee was a big part of his decision to take the role:

"I had to do it. It's a role that Bruce Lee once played, plus it's a positive Asian role which is rare in Hollywood.

"Over [in the States], I'm a newbie. There is a lot of waiting around before my scenes and I cannot speak too loudly. I have to be well-behaved. But overall, it was fun, and a good but different experience. Anyway, I went to Hollywood not just to make it big and develop my film career. I went there to also introduce my music to the Americans. So that they will notice me."

In a separate interview, Chou said that he had fun working on The Green Hornet, but that the Hollywood-style production tried his patience:

"In Asia, we get through a movie very quickly. We get the script, we get working and it's done. In Hollywood, they have rehearsals that go on for half a month before they begin shooting and shooting can go on for months."

The Green Hornet was adapted for the screen by Rogen and his frequent collaborator, Evan Goldberg, and also stars Cameron Diaz, Christoph Waltz, Edward Furlong and Edward James Olmos.

The Green Hornet is scheduled to open December 22, 2010.

I'm looking forward to this. These guys wrote the excellent Pineapple Express, so I have much respect. I know the tone's different, but it's good to have a quick witted GH. Also, the action was pretty good in that movie, even if used to comedic effect. I think this will be a surprise. Rogen really seems to have some dedication to the character. We'll see.

All I got to say is....KATO better be Incredible for this movie to succeed.

I still haven't decided if I want to actually pay Money to see this at the show or if I should just wait for the DVD if its even WORTH getting on DVD.

I wish this had Batman's Director maiking this film or even someone like Tim Burton.

Yes, this movie is a disgrace to all Green Hornet fans. I can say that confidently because, I haven't seen the movie yet, let alone a trailer. Thus, I know for sure the movie is a disgrace.

*ends sarcasm for those that didn't figure that out*

I have to wonder if Seth Rogen is a true comic book fan. If he is, it will probably go a long way in determining whether GH will be any good or not.

I grew up with the show and was a big fan. I always hold off on judging something, especially when it comes to information that I read. If I believed everything I read online, then I would be quite the pessimistic person. My main concern is Seth Rogen as the lead, but I am going to wait and see. It sounds to me like they are going to be dealing a lot with the origin of the characters, which I have no trouble with. I am still reserved about the film due to all the inconsistent information that has been released (which is a cause for some concern), but to call it a disgrace just seems over-dramatic to me.

How can anyone judge this picture from the few photos
shown and some inaccurate stories about the production.
Nick Cage ain't in it so the Cage haters don't have
anything to bitch about anymore.

Then Steven Chow pulled out, so what? whoop-de-doo!
Who cares. I didn't think his style fit GH anyway!
The new Kato is a very good martial artist and an OK
actor.

Edfward James Olmos is in this and I have never seen him do
a bad acting job in his life!

The only thing I can see is everybody hates Seth Rogen all
of a sudden! And I don't know why? PINE APPLE EXPRESS was
absolutely cool! The boy can do action.
He was very good at the drama parts in Knocked Up, which
was a very good movie! WTF, why does everybody hate Rogen
lately!
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 1/3/2010, 9:29 AM
DDD, I am not one who hates Seth Rogen, but I am only familiar with him doing comedy roles, so I am tentative, but hopeful as to how he play the role of the Green Hornet. I guess I would need to watch Knocked Up again (though I didn't care that much for the movie), because I can't remember much of dramatic parts in that movie.

I am in complete agreement though, it's far too early to be bashing the movie based on the information we do have.

why is everyone hating on it if there's no trailer or shit just photos and thats it. i bet the movie will do good and Seth could do action after watching pineapple express and he could write great scripts

So Astromerc@ you're some kind of psychic huh?
You can just feel its gonna be bad with your all-wise
powers and you're genius mind that can see into the
future and discern all there is! You can just feel its
bad from a few pictures and reading all the stupid press
this poor movie has gotten.

First Cage was supposed to be in it but he wasn't.
Then Stephen Chow (The all-wise knowledgeable one about
all things Green Hornet backs out so the movie is gonna
be crap!). What the hell does a foreign director
know about Green Hornet anyway? I'm glad he backed out!
I don't like his movies anyway.

Now its Rogen only knows comedy so he only knows crap
about funny stuff and he can't act. I seem to
remember when I was a kid people saying something about
this guy who was a comedian, how he couldn't do drama
so this certain Superhero movie is going to be sh!t!

I wonder what ever happened to that "Dark" supehero
movie and that moron comedian who couldn't act named, KEATON!

I was going to mention that DDD! No one thought Keaton could pull off Batman, despite showing some surprising dramatic chops in even his earliest comedic movies.

Yep, this movie WILL be amazing, no doubt. But from most comments I've read, I'm also sure most ppl won't appreciate it.

And watch him in freaks and geeks if you need proof Seth Rogen can play the straight man.

I have a friend who works in this industry. He explained to me the many facets- screen test, scrutinizing process- the casting or choosing of an actor, have to go throughto specifically play a character. You should read the choosing of Chris Evans to play "Captain America",very interesting indeed. Now,with Rogen, He miscast himself as The Green Hornet. Do you understand where I am coming from?. If I were Rogen, I would shave my head, grow a goatee and play a psycho. That would be the breakthrough he is looking for. Just because the new fad in Hollywood is to play a crime fighter to get noticed, it does not mean that Rogen canput a Green Mask on his face and say: "Let's roll Kato". Make no mistake, I have nothing against Seth Rogen, he is a good stand-up comedian and should stick to it. Portraying The Green Hornet is a leap of faith, he does not have the "chemistry",the acting experience and the charisma w/ the hard-core fans to play a dark and edgy character as The Green Hornet. This is a huge mistake and it will show at the box office if Hollywood does not send it straight to DVD. I had a chance to see some of the fight scenes in L.A. and Rogen does not have any credibility as a hand to hand combat expert,he looks like the doofus-nerd character we are used to seeing in his movies.
You'd think that Sony would just be busting its buttons with pride to show off "The Green Hornet" which stars Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz But if the early word of mouth on the movie was already bad, it just got worse with the news that Sony has now acknowledged - via the Associated Press' - that the studio won't be screening the film ahead of time for critics. It's a tried and true strategy that studios use to prevent bad buzz from spiraling out of control, at least until they've had a chance to squeeze some moola out of opening-weekend audiences who've been gulled into showing up on Friday night by the studio's trailers and TV spots. Still, it's one thing to keep critics away - and another thing to come up with a preposterous excuse for doing so. I guess people in Hollywood just love to tell whoppers, which is the nice way of saying that when things go wrong they come up with explanations that are about as believable as BP's rationale for why its Deepwater Horizon oil spill has been sending as much as 100,000 barrels of crude oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico every day.

rdcitraro - 6/15/2010, 7:24 AM
DDD,Funny to you but not funny to the large majority of the Green Hornet's hard core fans. I have seen some of the fight scenes in L.A. and his stun double does not even look like Rogen. On close-up shots, on the fight scenes, Rogen face expression does not carry the intensity of a fight. He basically looks like Seth Rogen (doofus-geek character) wearing a Green Mask. These are details that "Marvel" studies very carefully when choosing the actors who are going to play their characters. Sony should take a cue from Marvel.

@DDD Yes, as you can see I am.

The last I heard TDK is the highset grossing Comic book movie to date along with its other critical achevements, no I did not see anyone starring in the TDK with the name Keaton.

Now on to your lame future.:P
