Well, this is definitely a big surprise. Even though Martin Campbell-directed comic book adaptation Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds didn't get big numbers at the box office, Warner Bros. is still planning to move forward with the sequel. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, studio is indeed disappointed with the results, but they don't want to walk away from the planned franchise.

Warner Bros. is already planning a sequel to Ryan Reynolds' superhero pic Green Lantern, despite the film’s soft performance at the box office. Sources say Warners still believes in the franchise, even if the studio is "somewhat disappointed" with Green Lantern’s result. Over the weekend, Green Lantern fell a steep 66% at the domestic box office, grossing $18.4 million for a cume of $89.3 million. That’s a big decline.

I think that sequel will happen eventually, but it won't be anytime soon. So, what do you think? If they make a sequel, what would you like to see? Share your thoughts below.

Directed by Martin Campbell, Green Lantern is in theatres now.

This will be it! Sinestro and Hal Jordan will through down! The most epic battle of all comicbooks are coming, this is it! Get a new director, fewer writers. Stay to the relationship between Hal and Sinestro and more of Oa and the Corp! Every scene in space stole everything! Everyone deserves a second chance, this will be deserving!!!

Eh, I don't know how I feel about this. They were already working on the script before Green Lantern was even finished filming.

They need to find a new director and new writers. Completely rewrite the script since they had the same writers working on it. If they keep the same writers I am definitely not gonna waste my money to see it.

I'm excited, I really enjoyed the movie so I don't think this is much of a surprise
@Corpse I don't think Sinestro will be the villain in this movie. It would be epic but they want to build a trilogy out of this so I want to say we will see Sinestro and Hal's relationship explored more and we will most likely see the expulsion of Sinestro from the Green Lantern Corp but for sufficient build-up he will be the main adversary in the final movie. That's how I would want it done anyway, but we'll see of course. Either way they have all the right tools to make this movie incredible

Needs a new dirctor, which is probably what they will do, and they need to not just focus on hal so much and give a little more screen time to other green lanterns and explore how the ring works with their will power. Hopfully it'll be better then the first, even though i still dont think it was that bad.

New director... Better script... Same cast... The movie was NOT that bad it was a beginning so everyone stop bitching and give me more even though John Stewart is my favorite green latern

Yes, its time for a major overhaul on the production end. Get Mark Strong, keep Reynolds, get a new director, better storyline, and only one writer. Also it would be nice to see John Stewart if they are taking on the Sinestro Corps. The Lanterns are going to need all the help they can get.

I will hope they push thru with the sequel I have been waiting for this movie for years it was not that bad ,it was not the greatest I have seen but it deserve a better rating than it should. The sequel should delve in the GL mythos better that means the book of oa ,mogo ,atroticus and bring in john stewart and guy gardner. They should get a better storyline, I think they should treat the storyline like a harry potter story and I think if you wanna get the harry potter director too I think it would good. The key in the sequel is story that's what got into trouble is the storyline not the visual effects ,although some parts of it does not looks believable,I think geoff johns should be more involved in the story

Merchandising, DVD/blu ray, tv station syndication. WB will make money off GL. The sequel can't help but be better with sinestro as the main villain

@Fan4life I agree with you 100%, this movie was taken way out of context. It was a good movie but lacked the potential it should had been but for damn sure was not the worst comic book movie of all time. Plus I would love to John Stewart by far my favorite Green Lantern. Derek Luke for John Stewart.

@logicoflame: Like I said, it's just my opinion. Objectively speaking, I think the two are on about the same level-- fantastic visuals, generic (and sometimes nonsensical) plot, etc. The Tron Legacy soundtrack, however, is better by itself than both films combined.

Batman begins followed batman and Robin
X-men first class followed X3 (or worse wolverine)

So you can follow up a disaster (quality wise) with a solid movie

GAH THIS MOVIE WAS JUST SO BAD! How can they make the next one better when there was no depth of the origin in the first one? More bad editing and bad green screen suits. Make a damn set!

I totally agree Cable23! & great point spiderneil!

Great support & posts every one!

I feel that Green Lantern can and will be better the second time around I love the Green Lantern mythology and Hal Jordan has always been my favorite and hopefully we will see John Stewart & Kyle Raynor in the future but for now let's have our sequel!

There has to be a sequel since this first movie was all about the second. And there in lies the problem of this first movie. Tried to do way too much for a first movie. But I think the second one, focusing on Sinestro vs Hal could be really good.

The only way this can work is with a major budget cut. The closest similar case I can think of is with the Star Trek film franchise.

In 1979 Star Trek The Motion Picture was released to mixed reviews (Although, it was a huge box office success). A sequel wasn't even thought of until a new guy was bought on board. He was able to make the million times superior Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, at four times less the budget.

Any die hard Trekkie can tell you what happened after. Ten films later and the Trek franchise is still going strong (With number 12 on its way).

@spiderneil, with those cases, none were direct sequels. After Batman and Robin, we saw reboot everything. X3 and Wolverine were both financial successes, and First Class was still in a different direction.

The best comparison to GL is the first Hulk. A lack of critical and commercial success lead to a full reboot.

Get rid of the scriptwriters and get people that understand story structure.

While I thought the movie was terribly flawed, it didnn't screw up anything so much that they can't make the sequel good. I don't even think they need to recast. Just better writing and new director please.

It has yet to open in Australia, so it may make more money yet. I think a sequel is a great idea. Redeem the first one. With a good director it could be great. I like the cast. GL has so much potential for greatness.

I just saw Green Lantern today, and while it was not perfect, it was still a very enjoyable film. I'm glad that their may be a chance of a sequel, because it certainly deserves it. The Green Lantern comics have such a rich mythos that saying you could make a franchise out of it would be an understatement. If this is true, thank you Warner Brothers for believing in this potential franchise.

I'll believe this bit of news when it hits the pre-production stage. If this is true, then I say hire a better director who knows the character, better skript writers, fire Geoff Johns, fire Reynolds, fire Blake Lively and bring in Chris Pine for Hal Jordan. And definately keep Mark Strong as Sinestro.

And get rid of that LAME bubble wrap around the Guardians heads! :(

Good, I'm glad they didn't cop out and reboot. As long as the sequel makes up for the original, then I have no problem. It could be like Marvel's Iron Man series in reverse, where Iron Man was awesome and Iron Man 2 was not as good, Green Lantern was mediocre and the sequel will hopefully be the epic film we've been waiting for.
And no-one needs to be recast! Perhaps a change in director, but definitely better writers and editors.
