EDITORIAL: The Potential That GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Brings To The MCU

Today, Disney CEO Robert Iger shared his excitement for introducing the Guardians of the Galaxy to the world saying that Disney believes "it has strong potential." For me and many other fans this is exciting news because at least for me I see the potential success of the Guardians of the Galaxy impacting the MCU exponentially.

When Guardians of the Galaxy was first announced as being a part of the Phase 2 lineup I was completely apathetic to the news because I was too busy rejoicing about the fact that Captain America 2 was offically titled Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Also I wasn't completely sure that I wanted to see this movie because until that point I had never heard of Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon whereas Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America were household names to me by that point. However, Thor: The Dark World piqued my curiosity with its mid-credits scene involving the Collector. As a result I have bought and read Bendis' Guardians of the Galaxy# 1-10 and his Avengers Assemble# 1-8. So far, these have been the best Marvel NOW! comics I have read ever and this is one reason I'm super-excited for this movie.

The primary reason I am excited for this movie, however, is that I share the sentiments of Mr. Iger in that if this movie is successful then it could open up "a whole other realm or universe in terms of where it takes place, the characters that populate it and the stories that you can tell for those characters." In essence this film could be like the first Iron Man in that the cosmic side of the MCU could be explored more if Guardians of the Galaxy is successful. For example, more alien races like the Badoon and Spartax could be introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in future Guardians of the Galaxy sequels. Personally, I would love to have J'son of Spartax be the villain for a sequel since J-Son and Peter are like the Anakin and Luke Skywalker of Marvel Comics.

Second, the success of Guardians of the Galaxy could lead to potential storylines being adapted in future Avengers sequels. As we all know there is a high probability that the Galaxy's Mightiest Heroes will team up with Earth's Mightiest Heroes to take on The Mad Titan. However, if Ronan the Accuser is not killed at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy  then I see one of two storylines being used for Avengers 4,5, or 6- the Kree-Skrull War or Operation: Galactic Storm. I am hoping that it is the former because with the introduction of the Skrulls to the MCU then Avengers 7,8, or 9 could be about the Secret Invasion. Either way the end result will be amazing.

Lastly, Guardians of the Galaxy could lead to other cosmic heroes getting their own movie. For example, the Nova Corps will be introduced in this movie, and I could easily see Richard Rider or some other member getting their own movie. Also if the Negative Zone villain known as Annihilus is used in the Nova movie, then the Nova Corps and Guardians of the Galaxy could team up once again in an adaptation of the Annihilation storyline. For me this would be a dream come true because if Thanos is not killed in Avengers 3 we could see the infamous act of Drax punching a hole through his chest.

So, if you fans see the potential that GOTG brings to the MCU, then I ask that you make this movie a success.

Great article!
I'd love to see Infinity Gauntlet, Annihilation and Kree Skrull War on the big screen. And Marvel's cosmic universe is populated with so many interesting characters: Nova Richard Rider, Adam Warlock, Captain Mar-vel, Ms. Marvel, Quasar, Beta Ray Thor, Inhumans, , Kree Supreme Intelligence, Moon Dragon, Mantis, Genis, Phyla, Cosmo, Celestials, High Evolutionary, Elders of the Universe. The list goes on.
And if only Marvel Studio can get back The Silver Surfer, Galactus, Annihilus and the Watcher from Fox. That would be awesome.

I'd also love to see a Planet Hulk movie with the guardians involved. But yes, a Nova movie seems like a natural extension too, I actually assumed Sam Alexander was in the first one, but they're saving it.

I am really hoping that this next Fantastic Four movie flops then so Fox will give the rights back to Marvel Studios so. I want the Badoon to be an enemy of the GOTG, and a Annihilation movie made.

@CoulsonLives: Aside from Clip Art I've never put an image in a Word document.

This movie is going to be 10 pounds of awesome in a 5 pound bag . I think the way Marvel movies are going that they all need to be group movies or movies with more than one super hero like Avengers , Cap 2 or GOTG that will maximize the money they make and minimize the chance of any movie failing . GOTG has Avengers level potential they just need the right team , I would say to add a Thor character like Beta Ray Bill or Angela and one of Nova or Cap Marvel and they are good to go .

Of course unless they are going to make an Annihilators movie . Which characters do they own that they could use for that .

CBM FANS MUST UNITE AND GO SEE GOTG 2-3 TIMES. OUR MOVIES DOMINATE HOLLYWOOD AND THIS IS THE ONE THAT COULD BLOW THE TOP OFF THE WHOLE THING.

IF MARVEL COULD TEAM UP THE AVENGERS AND THE GOTG FOR AVENGERS 3 THE INFINITY GAUNTLET, THEY WOULD HAVE THE BIGGEST BALLS IN THE HISTORY OF HOLLYWOOD.

MAKE MINE MARVEL NUFF SAID.

PS. (HOW THE HELL CAN BATMAN BATTLE SUPERMAN WHEN HE CAN'T BEAT CAPTAIN AMERICA ?????????????????????????????????????????????????)

Umm......no, we don't have to unite and see GotG 2-3 times. Not unless it's actually good enough to deserve that. And unless the next trailer is better than the first, I'm not sure if I'm gonna see it once, or wait till it's on cable.

@THORION: I'm pretty sure teaming up the Avengers with GOTG to fight Thanos was the plan the entire time. That's probably why Avengers Assemble #1-8 was written so that Bendis could give us a picture of what Avengers 2 might have been like before the plan was changed to make Ultron the villain.

@xStarLordx: Which do you think is better between the two runs: Bendis' Marvel NOW! run or the 2008 run?
