GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Director James Gunn Debunks Galactus Theory And Shares Surprising Ego Detail

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has debunked a new theory about Galactus possibly appearing in the 2014 movie, while also sharing a surprising detail about Vol. 2's Ego the Living Planet...

Filmmaker James Gunn has spent years teasing us about a hidden Easter Egg in Guardians of the Galaxy, so it's no wonder some fans have started seeing them everywhere they look. While Galactus is likely to make his MCU debut imminently now that Marvel Studios has regained the rights to Fantastic Four, Gunn recently debunked the villain's possible introduction in his 2014 movie.

As you can see below, one fan wondered whether Gunn had decided to include Galactus' birth during that scene with The Collector explaining the role of the Infinity Stones in the MCU. While there's a striking similarity between whatever that moment is depicting and the comic book panel found by the fan in question, the director was quick to make it clear this was just a pure coincidence.

It's a shame in some ways, as it would be fun to think about the groundwork being laid for Galactus this long ago, but it might be better to properly introduce the planet-eating baddie on a grander stage. Marvel Studios once offered Fox the chance to keep the rights to the Daredevil franchise in exchange for Galactus and the Silver Surfer, but the rival studio ultimately declined. Clearly, these are characters Kevin Feige has been thinking about using in this shard world for a long time.

Talking of rights issues, Gunn later explained that Ego the Living Planet was a last-minute addition to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with things worked out very late in the production process. More details on that can actually be found in The Story of Marvel Studios book, but it's certainly interesting to wonder how the writer and director would have handled being unable to make use of Ego!

Where is the surprising ego detail? I really gotta stop clicking on your BS articles...

@DarkeyeZ - I think it's more explanation on the Ego and Negasonic trade.

@TheDpool - same. I'm still waiting for him to confirm the hidden easter egg though (if it even exists)

I really hope at some point they explain how EGO turned out the way he did vs the other Celestials in Eternals.

@Dacci - My guess would be he isn't even a celestial. He makes such a point about being alone that he likely doesn't even know celestials, or what they even are.

@Dacci - i think they werent sure how to aproach the celestial at the time, and leting James Gunn have a strong input into the Cosmic side of the mcu is something i'm not fond of

@Dacci - I don't think it needs to be strongly explained. Ego simply is an abomination. Instead of hatching out of a planet, something went wrong and he merged with the planet.

Almost like a deviation from the norm

@Vigor - I can get behind that reasoning, just wish they'd actually mention it. My theory with him actually related to Galactus. I have a feeling Galactus will be a celestial, but whose purpose is to destroy life instead of creating. I think Ego was marked for destruction but somehow evaded it completely but lost all him memories in the process floating in the void of space until he become Ego we saw GOTG2.

@Vigor @Dacci - you two are probably on to something. My guess is Galactus will indeed be also a Celestial, and when he appears my guess is we'll get explanations for him, Ego and other (off-shoot) Celestials

@GwenLantern - I don't read as much into it, but there have been small things that have been retconned so to speak (Peter Parker at the Stark Expo, Quill's grandma getting Cap's signature).

I'm sure there are Galactus plans, but as they are not sure what they're not letting one thing be confirmed already. Could be nothing, could be a tease (like Okoye's tremors in the ocean).

Didn't James Gunn once say that if a fan has a theory that doesn't contradict a particular vision too much, that he had a personal policy of confirming it to just "Let the fan have that"?

Unless he's forgotten or changed his mind, that may mean that there are indeed plans for Galactus and the whole 'Survivor of a previous universe'/Galan of Ta origin would contradict these plans. Otherwise he would let this fan have confirmation of their theory.

Veeerrrry interesting.

I like that James Gunn debunks fan theories that people try to pass off as inside info.
