I'm not going to lie, when it was first announced as one of the next wave of Marvel movies. I was confused and unhappy. I was confused cause I didn't know who they are. I was unhappy cause I wasn't a fan of the idea of a team that has a talking raccoon and a talking tree. But, thanks to research. I've become more supportive despite still being iffy on James Gunn directing it. Definitely Marvel's riskiest move to date. Not to mention it could end up being a "Green Lantern". A recent rumor suggests, Ronan the Accuser being the big baddie of, Guardians of the Galaxy. It would be a smart move story wise. Especially since they'll probably base him off of the Ultimate version, which is the version I prefer. So, why do I think Guardians of the Galaxy may not be a bad movie? Well, let's give this some thought.
Cast
This is an oddball cast but, maybe that's what Marvel Studios and superhero movies in general need. Something you wouldn't expect. Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, David Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, last I knew Michael Rooker was still in the movie as Yondu, Lee Pace as the villain (will get to him later) and Ophelia Lovibond in an unknown supporting role. The only movie I've seen Chris Pratt in was "Take Me Home Tonight", I personally enjoyed the movie but not him. I've heard good things about his dramatic chops though. Batista, well... let's hope he does good here. Marvel hasn't screwed us on casting choices so far. Saldana is a definite positive for Gamora, the idea of her playing the adopted daughter of Thanos is just all sorts of exciting. Lee Pace as the villain is genius. Unfortunately, I can't comment on Lovibond and Rooker. Lovibond cause she's just a left field choice, don't know whether it's a good or bad move and I've never seen Rooker in anything. Never watched "The Walking Dead". But, it's not a bad cast by any means so far. Definitely odd one though. I do have a good feeling about this though.
The Vibe
Here's where I think the movie has succeeded the most so far. If they keep the vibe we get from this particular piece of concept art, this is sure to get a reaction out of people. I'm wanting to say a positive reaction but, it's so far away and everything is still so early. Anyone else got a, Star Wars vibe? I do when I look at it and it just.. it fits. I'm not sure how else to describe it. If they stick to this vibe, I think it may just work as far as tone goes.
The villain
Here's where it's all pure speculation. Out of all the rumors and suggestions. Ronan the Accuser, the ultimate version makes the most sense. We've been introduced to Thanos, Guardians of the Galaxy is something new and its sole purpose really is to properly introduce Thanos and explain him. Thanos and Dr. Doom have always been the two biggest baddies in the Marvel Universe. Dr. Doom belongs to the Fantastic Four but wouldn't be much of a true threat to, The Avengers. Thanos is an uknown, a massive threat to The Avengers and there's a lot to him that the audience is going to end up learning. Ronan the Accuser as the son of Thanos for story purposes makes the logical thing to do. They've introduced Thanos so, why introduce the Kree? The Controller just never made any sort of sense to me as a villain choice. Not to mention he really comes off as a weak choice both in how they would do it story wise and his powers.
Possibly introducing characters for future films
I'm not talking about Thanos, other Guardians of the Galaxy or Ronan. I'm talking mainly about one character and one character only. Adam Warlock. If you're going to introduce Warlock (hopefully they bring him to the big screen) while Thanos is being introduced, Guardians of the Galaxy is the time. Plus, I really want him to team with The Avengers to take on Thanos in Avengers 3. That and cause I really want some sort of adaptation of, The Infinity Gauntlet. Not to mention I'm not a fan of the version of the character in, Annihilation: Conquest. So, why does this factor in Guardians of the Galaxy being a good film. All the characters and potential characters in the film, it would be a great benefit story wise for Warlock to be introduced. How could this play out? Well, if there should be a Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in Phase Three, it would also make sense for it to be the last solo movie in Avengers 3. In a post credits scene in GOTG 2, Adam gets the soul gem and finds out that Thanos has possession of the other five. Adam then realizes he must find The Avengers and ask for help, he flies away and the screen goes black. That would be exciting and again, it ties to the Guardians of the Galaxy (particularly Gamora and Drax) for Avengers 3, we get Thanos' plan and the whole story of Avengers 3 in one little scene. It's just fanboy thinking although as I said before, it would really make sense story wise. Unfortunately, I don't see it happening.
Why it won't be Marvel's "Green Lantern"
Reynolds and Strong are the only positives about Green Lantern. A lot of people think it should've been taking mostly in space and in particular, Oa. I don't share this feeling. It should have had a balance between time on Oa/space and on earth. But that's one of many problems as with uninteresting characters, bad visual effects, uninteresting villains, lack of character development which helped them be uninteresting characters and going back to the lack of time on oa/space, we don't really know anything about the Green Lantern corps except for what they do. We don't know anything about the characters really which makes it hard to set up a potential franchise and trilogy. Whereas again, we don't know much about Guardians of the Galaxy but I have a feeling we won't have these problems (by no means am I trying to bash Green Lantern). We have the "main villain" in Thanos and potentially Ronan. We get background on Thanos and whoever the other villain is and their motives. Which will then, help further explain Gamora and Drax. That's four in one right there. We're definitely going to be spending a lot of time in space. The only thing we can't know is how good the acting is going to be and how good the visual effects are going to be.
Well, that's all I got for this one. What are your thoughts on this? Should Ronan be the villain? Should he be portrayed as Thanos' son? Do you think the cast is good and what about the movie being potentially Marvel's "Green Lantern"? Comment below and be civil.
