Like the rest of us, James Gunn woke up to the news that a true legend had passed on. David Bowie died after an 18 month battle with cancer at the age of 69, and the director counted himself among his biggest fans.

Gunn posted a tribute to the man he called "an idol" to his Facebook page, and mentioned that he and Kevin Feige had discussed the possibility of Bowie making a cameo appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. They initially heard back that he probably wouldn't have been feeling up to it, but then afterwards that he was doing okay and there might be interest after all - making Gunn's Twitter discovery all the more shocking.

"Just a very short while ago Kevin Feige and I were talking about a cameo role in Guardians Vol. 2, and he brought up Bowie's name. I told him nothing in the world would make me happier, but I heard from common friends he wasn't doing well. We heard back that he was okay and it could potentially happen. Who knows what that was about? But, for whatever reason, it made my Twitter revelation more of a surprise."

Gunn used Bowie's song "Moonage Daydream" from arguably his most popular album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, for the first GOTG, and reveals that he might choose another for Vol. 2. Even though the director has "cut the scene it was used in from the script", he says he's going to try to figure something out.

You can read Gunn's post in full HERE. Please feel free to post tributes of your own in the usual place, and let us know which Bowie tune means the most to you.

Didn't want to include this in the article but Bowie was a hero of mine, Devastated by his passing, and listening to Blackstar is actually difficult at the moment.

Didn't really listen to David Bowie but I know of his songs and liked a few but I absolutely loved his song that was in MGS V even though he didn't do the vocals it was still his song.

@RorMachine - I usually don't really care for famous people.

But I really felt Bowie's passing. I remember listening to his songs as a kid, I even have 2 Labyrinth LPs to this day... I used to play'em to exhaustion.

Really sad.

I just re-listened to The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, and when it got to Moonage Daydream all I could think about was Guardians.

It is sad when an artists dies from something that is not controllable......instead of other legends who dies from drug overdoses.....now granted some people suffer from depression so much they turn to drugs, so I guess that is something out of their control as well.

Heard about this last night right before I was about to go to bed. Listened to some of my favorites of his instead. Sad to see such an icon go.

@NoPhucksGiven

Are you serious?

I don't believe that. You'd have to have been living under a rock for your entire life. Prob didn't realize it was him you were hearing, but believe me you have heard SOMETHING. For example, seen GOTG? Then you've heard Bowie.

Anyway, he lived an incredible life and prob had a few close calls over the years. 69 is still too young, but what a legacy.

Unfortunately i'm dead serious. I just previewed his songs on itunes and its not the type of music my parents would listen to so I didn't grow up on it.

You have to hand it to an artist that never allowed himself to be defined by anyone but himself. He was constantly taking himself, and his art, in a direction that allowed him to grow. He never got lazy like some of the artists from his generation; the guys that I grew up listening to that were turned into theme park caricatures of the artist they once were. His influence was tremendous, and he will be missed.

t's a shame :/ I was never really a fan of his when it came to the music, but i know tons that loved his music (my parents are in that category). My personal favorite from him is The Labyrinth which i saw as a kid. His character in that movie is my favorite in that movie.

R.I.P David Bowie.

I just talked to some friends, and we agreed that while neither of us would've actually called him- or herself a serious, dedicated David Bowie fan his passing actually hit us all really hard for some reason. He was just such a unique and versatile artist... :'(

Bowie was the human embodiment of every important musical movement in the late 70s and 80s. He's much more than a musician. he's a composer at the level of Mozart

@Nophucksgiven

Yeah that makes sense, I have to keep in mind that my son's girlfriend looks at us weird when we listen to classic rock, Prince, or any music from the 80's!
