HANCOCK 2 EXCLUSIVE: Director Peter Berg Briefly Updates the Sequel

One of the surprise hits of summer 2008 was the Will Smith superhero film Hancock, which the critics didn't exactly embrace, but, based on box office, the audience did. Now director Peter Berg provides an exclusive short update on the potential sequel.

Says Berg, who is currently getting the scifi action-adventure Battleship ready for its release in May, "We've been talking about the sequel between us, Will Smith, [producers] Michael Mann and Akiva goldman and myself. We're all interested, but we literally just have trouble getting into the same room at the same time. We did have a series of meetings last year and started to hash out an idea for sequel -- and Will Smith actually had the idea -- so I think it will happen, it's just a question of timing."

I liked the first. Not sure where a sequel would go. A prequel fleshing out the beginnings of the super powered beings seems the obvious way to go. I shall wait and see....

The first was okay, but I really didn't care for the thing with Charlize Theron's character. It's just a weird story.

I'm not sure where they'd go with #2. He can't go back to being a drunk homeless guy, so where's the humor?

I never cared for it, nice action but that's it. Don't care if they do a sequel or not.

The first started nicely.

But then came the explanation on the superbeings and the movie went down the toilet.

It should be a prequel about Hancock's teenage years spent with upper class relatives in Bel Air during the early 1990's.

Started off good but once it was revealed that Theron was his wife, it all went downhill from there. I'll pass.

I liked the first. Interesting mythology. I think a second film should be part sequel part prequel. Where we'd start in the present, find out that Will and Charlie's characters were NOT the last, and that there is one more. He's been in hiding this whole time, and his mate was killed by humans. he hates humanity and has been undermining our lives for ceturies. He'd be like Ra's Al ghul with powers, and now that he knows he's not the last he wants company. We would flashback and see some of the earlier stuff of course. And when Will doesn't join him dude goes after humanity AND Charlize!

@Nomis - lol, how is Jon Stewart of The Falcon established Superheroes?? Half the world didn't know who Hal Jordan was or Green Lantern let alone care, you honestly think they have either of those two 'token-black' Superheroes on the tip of their tongue?

At this point in time more people around the world know who Hancock is as opposed to The Falcon or Jon Stewart!

Loved the first movie, was bold enough to try something new with the genre and deliver a mythical premise to the origins of the superhero concept. All three acts were superb in their own tone of merit, too bad some modern audiences are unable to deal with a movie evolving while they watch it unlike your run of the mill popcorn flick. Rather they didn't make another one though, sequels are becoming a nasty way of Hollywood turning every successful film into a long rinsed out and monotonous franchise!

if they can explain alot of things from the first one, i don't mind. like why they come in two and from where, and also how do i get that done to me. things along those lines?)

I hate when people say critics hated it but audience loved based on numbers. The audience isn't allowed to to the ticket stand and say "Hey! That movie sucked, I want my money back." So numbers mean nothing. Even rotten tomatoes isn't that great of a resource because it is based on people who "actually" went to the site and voted not every single person on the planet. It wasn't a great movie, it wasn't a good movie, it was simply another Will Smith saves the Planet (or Country or State or City or Friends or Family). If they don't make a sequel they will just make a different Will Smith movie and your friends or family will drag you there or you will drag someone else there.

First half of Hancock was frikkin' awesome, but once they got to the origin... made me roll my eyes. Didn't care for the villain either, but I heard they were going to address that (the villain) in a sequel.

Meh :/

First half was good and so was Eddie Marsan as the villain (although it would have been interesting to see him become a supervillain or something)
Everything went downhill when Charlize turn out to be superhero too.
