HELLBOY: Guillermo Del Toro Weighs In On Mike Mignola's Decision To Reboot The Franchise

Just a couple of months after his failed attempt to get Hellboy 3 off the ground, Guillermo del Toro learned along with the rest of us that a reboot is on the way. Here's what he thinks about that!

Earlier this year, Guillermo del Toro attempted to finally make Hellboy 3 a reality. After a Twitter poll garnered a huge response and the filmmaker met with creator Mike Mignola and star Ron Perlman, fans started getting excited about the threequel happening...until del Toro confirmed it would not.

Just two months later, we learned that a reboot is in the works from director Neil Marshall and that Stranger Things star David Harbour is going to be taking on the role of the fan-favourite superhero.

When The Hollywood Reporter caught up with del Toro, they asked how he feels about the news and it seems like it's got his blessing. "I don’t own Hellboy, Mike does. So, you know, he is the father of the character and if he wants to reboot it, it’s perfectly fine. I got to make two — that’s two more than I thought I would get to make. So you know, as far as I’m concerned god speed and god bless."

Del Toro definitely appears to be disappointed and it's easy to see why. Mignola clearly decided that he'd rather see a new take on Hellboy over the director's plans for a third instalment. There's currently no release date for the reboot, but production is expected to start sometime during this coming fall.

It was the right decision in the end, Perlman is in his late 60s and it's been almost a decade since the second film, there weren't many chances a studio would have greenlit the third film especially with a larger budget

Even though an R rated Hellboy reboot's sounds like the way to go, I still would've liked to see the completion of Del Toro's Hellboy trilogy.

As much as I wanted Hellboy 3, I complete understand why a studio wouldn't want to do a film with a 120 million budget for a series whose last film was almost a decade ago. Love to del Toro films but the odds were always against Hellboy 3 due to the 2 previous Hellboy films not having big box office numbers due to their release dates going up against Passion of the Christ and The Dark Knight.

Right now, I'm glad we have a Hellboy film to talk about and one written by Mignola. Bring it on.

@LEVITIKUZ - Right. I love the first twwo, yet nostalgia shouldn't play a part in progression. It's been long enough that we can now move on to the next phase. Things look good at the minute, so let's see where it takes us.

Mr. Del Torro either needs to make his Mountains of Madness or jump on the Universal MonsterVerse.

Pans Is starting to get very small in the rear view mirror.

The Hellboy movies were ruined for me the moment they made Liz his love interest. Hellboy isn't a love story!

@GeneKhan1964 - No, because I thought that was a good idea when the Ultimate universe did it. It added to the depth of the story when they eventually broke free from the feds and went public.
