Zack Snyder's big screen directorial debut was Dawn of the Dead, so it's fitting that, as he leaves the DC Extended Universe behind, the filmmaker is returning to the world of the undead. Set for release on Netflix, Army of the Dead is set in Las Vegas, and follows a group of mercenaries as they take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.
It's a crazy, unique concept, and one which points to a movie which should be an absolute blast.
For lead star Dave Bautista (who chose this movie over a role in The Suicide Squad), he's been champing at the bit for years to star in a zombie story. "I’m a zombie fan," he recently told Empire. "I tried to get on Walking Dead for years. I said I would come and play a zombie for free, but they said, ‘You’re too big!’"
As for what makes Snyder's take on the genre special, the actor added: "For me, there had to be something special about a zombie film for me to sign up. What sets us apart is the heist. But there’s a whole bunch of different layers to this film."
We don't have a confirmed release date for Army of the Dead, but we know it's coming to Netflix sometime this year. It's likely the streaming service will wait for the hype surrounding Zack Snyder's Justice League to die down a little before hyping their own movie from the popular filmmaker.
