Johnny Depp Meets The Night Stalker

Johnny Depp Meets The Night Stalker

This could very well be Johnny Depp's version of a mid-life crisis: portraying all of his childhood favorite characters on the big screen. It's starting with the currently shooting Dark Shadows, in which he'll play vampire Barnabas Collins; will continue with him as Tonto in The Lone Ranger and now comes word he'll play reporter Carl Kolchak in The Night Stalker.

Writes Deadline in an exclusive report, "Depp had fond memories of the ABC telepic and series The Night Stalker, and got Disney's Rich Ross and Sean Bailey sparked on a pitch for Depp to potentially play tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak. Originated by Darren McGavin, Kolchak was the dogged journalist first seen in the 1972 telepic (where he hunted a killer who was draining the blood of beautiful girls on the Las Vegas strip) and later in the ABC series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Kolchak's investigations always seemed to lead him to the doorstep of vampires, zombies, werewolves and aliens. For its time, it was pretty scary stuff. The studio will go out to writers shortly. David Kennedy will be exec producer."

Deadline failed to mention that there was a 1973 TV movie called The Night Strangler (co-starring Richard Dean Anderson as the creature, soon to be cast as Oscar Goldman in The Six Million Dollar Man). There was also a teleplay for a third TV movie called The Night Killers, about robot duplicates being put in the place of people in crucial power positions. Additionally, in 2005 X-Files producer Frank Spotnitz served as the guiding force behind a revamped version of the show, there have been a number of novels and a wide variety of comic book adventures as well.

The two TV movies were directed by Dark Shadows creator Dan Curtis and written by legendary writer Richard Matheson. The '70s TV series was guided by David Chase, who would go on to create The Sopranos.

@bodwulf I remember it too. Depp is playing Tonto? I thought he was going to be TLR. Weird.

I saw this on tv as a kid and really liked it. Guess it must have been some kind of feature length pilot? I thought it was a proper movie anyway

Both The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler were 90-minute TV movies that aired on ABC in 1972 and '73 respectively. The series version, first called The Night Stalker then retitled Kolchak: The Night Stalker, ran for 20 episodes in 1974.

Here's where I date myself again, but I saw the original Night Stalker TV movie when it aired in '72 and I was 12. It scared the hell out of me! I freakin' loved Kolchak.

Ugh. Why can't Johnny just disappear for about 5 years. I'm tired of hearing about how he's playing this TV character, or is in this Tim Burton film.. It's kind of depressing, really. How about something that HASNT been done before? just a thought. Maybe give Roman Polanski a call and see if he'll sell you a script to 9th Gate part 2... Or something..

Wow I loved this show when I was kid. I waited for eternity for new episodes. (Here in the Philippines it only showed 5 episodes). Johnny Depp may seem too young for the role but I guess he can pull it off.

One of my all time favorite shows. I have the DVD Set. The 2005 version failed to capture the eerie atmosphere combined with humor of the original. Let's hope this one does. Depp wouldn't be my choice to play Carl Kolchack, but we will see.

Depp is great actor when it comes to Kolchack type of characters. Rango and Fear And Lothing In Las Vegas proofs that.
As long as the movie isnt directed by Tim Burton i give my blessing.

I would prefer Robert Downey Jr. as Kolchack thou

Great Show, They tried a re-vamp a few years ago with Stuart Townsend, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXm8tllWnEI, but it was horrid. Kolchack was X-files long before the X-files IMO. and MoonStone did an excellent comic series too.

Cool the Night Stalker rocked in its day. Its a bit dated by todays standards a remake would be awsome. Not sure about Depp though. Seems Hollywood thinks there are only half a dozen actors.

The Night Stalker was the biggest inspiration for the X Files. The actor had a cameo. There was a short lived remake of the tv series but it wasnt good.

I remember seeing the Night Stalker when I was really little- like 9 or 10. Cool stuff. I wouldn't necessarily mind a revival of the character if the story is good, but I am getting mighty damn tired of Johnny Depp. Can't someone else do it?

^^i don't know why, but i don't get tired of the guy. That being said, I don't run out and watch everything he's in either. I can definitely see how to some he's overplaying his welcome.

Nightstalker was also one of my childhood favs. I've got nothing at all against Depp, I just hope this doesn't suck like the rebooted series a few years ago. That load of crap should have met the same fate as the Wonder Woman reboot.

This show was great, I think Depp will be a great Kolchak, Is Darren McGavin still alive? If so, he needs a cameo in the movie. I just finished watching the entire series on Netflix. One of my fav shows growing up.

My mom and I would watch Kolchak when he was on, man those were the days. Dad would tune in for Sanford and Son ,occasionally he would watch other shows with us but yeah bring on the Night Stalker film. Many feel as though the show was a prelude to X-Files. Kolchak ran into some seriously fricked up shit!

Sadly Darren McGavin passed away in 2006.
