Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) joins a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across a crashed extraterrestrial spaceship buried in the ice of Antartica. She discovers a creature that seems to have died in the crash eons ago.

When an experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate joins the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them and taking them over one at a time, using its ability to perfectly mimic any lifeform it touches, and eventually reaching civilization.

Twenty nine years later and we're getting our next Thing fix. Star of Oscar-nominated Australian drama Animal Kingdom Joel Edgerton is pictured above in this new photo image from Universal's The Thing. Not a lot really, but fingers crossed this movie will have the magic the original one had.

Stars: Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Kate Lloyd

Eric Christian Olsen as Adam Goodman

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Derek Jameson

Joel Edgerton as Sam Carter

Ulrich Thomsen as Dr. Sander Halvorson

Jonathan Walker as Colin

Kim Bubbs as Juliette

LEEE777 The Thing is released on Oct 14 and thank you Hollywood for not making this one a remake, thank you.

IF they're smart, they'll use more creature effects and next to no CG. The original is one of the greatest horror movies ever.

The original is such an under-rated movie, for me at least, I consider it as a classic and one of the best horror films. The ending was thought-provoking and surprising.

Hopefully the prequel will be good.

so a team of humans finds the monster, unleases it, it starts to take the form of some of the humans, and they have to kill it........exactly how is this not a remake? is it because the humans are norwiegans and not americans? sounds like the exact same story line to me.

What's with all the prequels lately? Make new stories already. I remember the original wasn't Kurt Russel in it?

Where are those awesome Norwegian antartica sunglasses he is supposed to wear like in the original when the moron drops a grenade on himself.

Why do you all keep refering to Carpenters movie as the original? It was the remake and this is its prequel...
Carpenters movie is damn near perfect and has definately stood the test of time.Love it.
@superdog
Its not the same story at all.In The Thing we see the aftermath of this movie and I for one am very interested in what must have happened. In The Thing, the americans have no idea what they've found for the first half of the movie. They think they have a dog and thats all.In this movie the scientists will know from the start that they have somekind of alien species,so it puts a completely different slant on the movie imo :)

amazo@ read the synopsis above and tell me that it doesnt sound exactly like the kurt russell movie. i just dont see them discovering that its an alien 20 minutes earlier in the movie makes all that much of a difference. i mean look at the photos above, a bearded guy in cold clothes and flame throwers. gee, where have i seen that before?

@ amazo

you're 100% correct, the thing from another world is the original.

john carpetners the thing is the remake & this movie is the prequel to the remake.

i think people just shut the original movie out.

@superdog
But having seen the Carpenter movie you must be able see where they WILL differ?!? Surely? They may share a location and theme but the story itself could be acres away from The Thing. If they've hired good writers...
And I don't know what planet you're from but most guys in the arctic wear winter gear and have beards....
I just fail to see anything to get hung up on.You're nit-picking before knowing anything bro :)

Or they're too young to know any different and only know Carpenters movie because of hype and the computer game :)
I sometimes doubt that anymore than a handful of people on this site know diddly about the characters/histories or movies they're spouting off about lol
All the 15 year old Batman 'experts' on here crack me up mate!

Well I have to agree with superdog here, this movie is just another same old story, but with new effects, and a silly non original concept, it isn't anything different from the Carpenter movie, only in that the team are Norwegian, and it's set some years before the Carpenter movie. So really it's nothing to jump up and down to......we can argue till we are all blue in the face, but it's looking like it won't introduce anything new. I suppose a couple of years will pass, and we will be heading to the cinema for the sequel to the prequel of the sequel........

I still think, hope, and can see ways to make this more than a repeat.
Tbh though I can also see the potential for them screwing it up.I just think it's too early to start writing it off :)

I did dude! Totally! Still a little disappointed that Baldur is A.W.O.L though, but on the whole I thought it was as good as they could make it with the Avengers and the whole cross-over thing in mind :)
Pumped to watch the movie!

Can't wait bro!
I used to collect a few Marvel books,X-men books,Amazing Spider-man,but over the years each has let me down so now I'm only collecting Thor.Love it.I have high hopes for this movie and really have my fingers crossed that we get multiple solo sequels! Not really all that bothered for The Avengers or the other movies Marvel has on its slate.I'll watch them and probably enjoy them as comicbook movies but Thor packs a special punch with me.Although I am slightly predisposed towards Thor as I have Norwegian blood lol :)
Just realised I spelt 'Baldur' (Balder)the mythical way and not the Marvel way too! lol

i know what you mean, some titles have been a bit of a letdown over the years from marvel their cosmic stuff has been the best.

i read couple of dc titles green lantern, the flash, brightest day & whatever the mega event story is of the year i.e 52,blackest night, final crisis & so on.

as for the avengers i'm very excited for this its gonna be a contender for best cbm ever.

the original movie is on the best sci-fi movies of all time. I don't think it is right for them to mess with the story by adding a prequel..... but im still going to go see it just to see how it turns out.

I love THE THING. I mean it. It's by far my fave monster movie. I am excited to see how them swedes dealt with this thing even though we know the outcome. I'm betting we'll get a good look at how they got there and where they're from. Very Cool.

I'm not bashing Marvel.I don't know it if was their quality dipping or just my tastes changing. With T.A.Spider-man it was definately the quality though. After Stracynski left it struggled on for a couple of years before I'd had enough. It was a mess.Like I said,I still love Thor and Marvels back catalogue though.I am more of a DC boy tbh.Its just what I was raised on and I like their darker edge.More twisted motivations and less showy than Marvel. Its all individual taste though. All comics and All companies rock in their own ways and I think it would be a tragedy to lose any of them or their output.Comics forever!!!!

I know that this "The Thing" movie is supposed to be the prequel, but it kinda looks like a full-blown remake. Does anyone else think it's weird that Joel Edgerton's character resembles Kurt Russell's MacReady?
