Steve Niles & Joe Hill Are Sick of Sparkling Vampires, Too!

If you've ever screamed to the heavens out of frustration over the "softening" of vampires (or have dealt with your outrage in a more subtle manner), 30 Days of Night creator Steve Niles and best-selling author/Locke & Key creator Joe Hill share your pain!

There are a number of horror fans who yearn for the days when vampires were the monsters that they were originally intended to be, and writers Steve Niles and Joe Hill are (separately) attempting to do something about it. In the case of Niles, he and IDW are holding the "Sparkles For Blood" promotion at San Diego Comic-Con. The idea is that fans of The Twilight Saga can come to the IDW booth and exchange copies of Stephenie Meyer's novels for a volume of Niles' 30 Days of Night.
Says Niles, "Real horror fans have watched vampires systematically turned into wimpy fodder for years now. It's time to fight back. I'm happy to be working with IDW on the 'Sparkles for Blood' event. Hopefully, working together we can put an end t this nightmare." 30 Days of Night have spawned numerous comic spin-offs (including a forthcoming ongoing series to be written by Niles) and a feature film version. The premise looks at what happens when vampires take over a remote Alaskhan town and those who remain for the night that lasts 30 days try and survive.
Best selling author Joe Hill (son of Stephen King and who has written the novels Heart-Shaped Box and Horns) says that he's working on a "sideways" vampire novel that will address the situation as well. He muses, "Nothing is more tired than the whole idea of the vampire, and I hate sexy vampires. How did that happen? Sexy vampires are like sexy leeches Really? Really?!"

I think the whole sexy vampire thing happened due to anime. Though, ironically, those sexy vampires in anime just so happens to also transform into more grotesque monsters when ever they are either feeding or fighting.

So basically, I am either saying that us Americans don't know how to make vampires badass anymore or that the Twilight vampires aren't really vampires.

Either way, we still have Being Human at least to have us ignore Twilight related stuff.

Amen, brothas! F*ck that sparkly shit! I wanna see vampires explode when they hit sunlight! I was see vampires ripping out throats, not tenderly kissing them!

I actually met Steve Niles at Wizard World Con '03. One of the nicest, coolest guys I've ever met.

Need a good vampire hour with some jokes at Twilight? Watch the episode of Supernatural called "Live Free or Twi-Hard." Starts off with some satirical camp of the Twilight Saga but ends with some incredibly creepy scenes.

I think Buffy and Angel adequately portrayed vampires as both "sexy" and monstrous.

You had characters like Angel, Spike, Darla and Drusila, who were all goodlooking actors, but then they became monsters when they "put their game face on".

Also, they could be pretty viscous.I think Angelus is one of the best representations of a vampire in any medium. You don't really get that with vampires nowadays.

No vampire story compares to Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles imo. The Vampire Lestat is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. But Meyer is responsible millions of kids becoming avid readers, likely for the rest of their lives. That should be commended.

The best part is how rabidly the twitards defend their shit. My wife reads this garbage and watches the flics and that's bad enough that she is a fan and the fights we have over it. I make it a point to become an dick when I catch her watching one. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to deal with every fan of the franchise thinking it's the best shit since sliced bread and treating people like us like idiots for recognizing it as over-glorified harlequin romance tripe. I'll never understand how this shit got so popular. No, wait, I know how, just occurred to me... cause people for the most part are [frick]in' stupid.

@ everyone

I hate the twilight movies. Its the same story over and over again. And the fact that girls like it is so annoying and that society finds it acceptable for a sparkling fairy to watch a girl sleeping at night and stalk her, and then bella cant [frick]in decide if she loves edward or jacob through all the movies, and the fact that edward rapes her in the 4th book and shes ok with it just makes you think that girls are fine with being depressed and like the men raping them and treating them badley, and yes i read them cause of my girlfriend. I prefer Harry Potter over the twilight garbage, its well written and has character delevopment and you actually feel for the characters. And on a positive note I got my girlfriend to dislike twilight after we argued and watched all three underworld movies.

Guys, Twilight is porn for girls... as simple as that. They love to think that all men are pale slim rich homosexuals that shit rainbows and somehow will take them to bed and give them cute babies. That's it. TWILIGHT IS FOR HORNY 15 YEAR OLD GIRLS AND LONELY OR STUPID ADULT WOMEN.

I read that first book of that shit and I had to push myself to finish it. Same about the first movie, which is even worst than the book.

I love vampires, in my opinion the things in Twilight are a hybrid between Vampires and Teen Idols like Justin Bieber. There some good stuff about vampires, just like music, but you won't find it in MTV (which is for girls too).

PD: Girls rule the world now, we have to get used to it.

WHAT IS THE EFFING DEAL WITH THIS TWILIGHT HATE ALREADY? @GUNSMITH, what is your [frick]ing problem? How is it different to like costumed superheroes than to like sparkling vampires? Twilight has been around forever, and by simply choosing to ignore it, I have never - EVER - felt fed up with it. Actually, it's hate like this that spreads it all over the place. If S. Meyer managed to turn her novels into a minor phenomenon by giving her own interpretation of vampires - completely FICTIONAL creatures that are in the public domain, mind you - then good for her. If you don't like it, then --
Just. Effing. Ignore it.

Cheers.

I have a question - Why can't Twilight exist in its own world? And the other vampire stuff in it's own world. What is up with all the hate? Frickin' Fanboys. Do you guys EVER get tired of hating stuff? Obviously not. I am a fan of Twilight and Anne Rice's work for that matter, and I definitely don't get the hate. In fact - I give all vampire fiction a shot, and then decide whether I like it or not. Vampire Diaries is one of the BEST vampire stories out there, and the TV show is even better. The Vampire Fiction Genre is unique in the sense that it can have multiple takes on a style. There is no one right way to tell a vampire story. I personally don't like/can't stand the "mindless beasts/rabid/parasite/zombie plague" vampire stories. I like vampires & vampires stories where the vampires can think for themselves, and NO - "Buffy The Vampire Slayer WASN"T it (but that's me); and at the same time; you'll never here me slamming (attempting to portray them in a negative light) those types of stories. I love (not) how Steve Niles says "Real Horror Fans..." as if to say, if one likes Twilight, they're not real horror fans. Wow. The audacity of some people. And then all you simple minded birds who can't think for themselves reads this garbage and says "yeah me too". 80% of the people (mostly males still living at home that know nothing of a woman's affections. That's pretty much the majority of fanboys) that "slam" on and "hate" on Twilight (and books like it) have NEVER even read one book in the series or seen one movie. If you've read it and don't like it - fine. But all the hate is just asinine and unwarranted. What you're upset & Bitching about is it's popularity and you all sound like little punks on the school yard crying because your football team lost. Stephanie Meyer wrote the story she wanted to write. So her vampires sparkle. So what? I like Twilight simply because there's nothing else like it on the market. It exists in it's own space and if one really read the book, they'd know that. Isn't that what you fanboys like - "different"? Oh I get it - only if it plays along with your limited unrealistic preconceived notion of what's good and acceptable. You don't like it - write something better, OR shut your mouth. Guys like Guillermo Del Toro and Steve Niles (and all of you) that constantly rag on the twilight style vampires sound like little b*&%$s. Put out good stories and people will buy your stuff. It's that simple. Put up or shut up. Anyone who HAS to talks s&%t about something else in order to get their stuff looked at or accepted is a sad individual. And any professional that has to sink to that level idiocy doesn't deserve to have their stuff published in the first place. You don't SM hating on other types of takes on the vampire mythology, but yet and still, everyone wants to burn her at the stake because she wrote an entertaining story and it has sense become very popular. I so glad the actual real world doesn't work the way it does inside a fanboys head because it really would be a boring Dystopian mess. It's truly funny to me how these guys' stories just don't resonate as well as Twilight does (with the masses) and so they feel the need to talk s^%t about Twilight. That is so sad. What's even more funny/sad is all the fanboys who drink the "hate" kool-aid now, loved Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Hahahahahahahaha. I mean really? You guys............

I think Vampires as a whole are pretty played out right now actually. Twilight and all this other teen angsty vamp **** is just the genre hitting it's lowest point. I think Vamps just need to be giving a rest for a few years (looks like Werewolves are trying to make a comeback so let them have the spotlight) and then some horror maker with talent come in with a awesome, bloody film that effectively makes everyone forget about sparkly pedos (cause as my mom pointed out to me, Edward really is a pedo, going after a teenage girl he's like decades older than).

And no, I wouldn't credit Meyer with getting a generation to pick up a book. The Twilight audience are mostly those type of girls who you normally find reading those supernatural tween romances anyway. Word of mouth among their camp is what got those books popular.

For over an decade, Rowling had boys and girls from all ages and backgrounds running out to grab her lengthy (and not to mention, much better written) novels, each longer than the last and finishing them in days so they can discuss them with their friends. She got a generation reading. Just saying.

@ askanison40,

Vampires are supposed to be horrible monsters. The was a time in my life, when I was younger, when I had a fascination with the vampire myth. I have read many books about vampires and it's origin in eastern European folklore. Originally, vampires where the mindless reanimated bodies of evil people, like criminals or people that where not particularly religious in the local village.

The vampire with brains is a creation of Victorian gothic literature, starting with "The Vampyre" by John Polidori and culminating with the best of them, "Dracula" by Bram Stoker. And Dracula, in the original novel, was NOT a suave, handosome guy. He was a monster with foul breath and hairy palms.

The "vampires" in the Twilight books share very little with the true mythological vampire. For people like me, that are knowledgeable about the vampire myth and origin, the Twilight book are a joke and an insult to what can be considered true vampire literature. And btw, it is not just the loose concept of what is a vampire that makes Twilight so bad, but also it's low-brow style. It IS comparable to trashy romance novels.

The truth of the matter is that Twilight was written to cater to the fantasies of teenage girls and lonely older women as stated before by another commentator in this thread. If the majority of the people on this website scorn it, it is not because of any of your juvenile reasons that you stated in order to defend it, it is because truthfully, Twilight is not something that we can consider to be true vampire stories.

@Priest - Actually the truth is, There is NO authoritative "correct" version of vampire literature as its all entertainment. Or let me say it in a way that you'll understand it better - IT'S ALL MAKE BELIEVE!!. There's no such thing as "true vampire stories". Are you for real? That's like me saying "I don't like Heavy Metal music, because it's a sub-genre and it wasn't the first kind of music recorded. Really? That's all you got? Like I said previously, vampire fiction is open to all kinds of takes, and SM "sparkle" is just one take of thousands. And by the way - Count Dracula was suave and handsome. Have you even ever read the book?
Priest
Priest - 7/16/2011, 2:31 PM
@ askanison40,

First, I have read Dracula, have you? Have you read the description of him? He was nothing like the modern fairy vampires of Twilight. Jonathan Harker describes Dracula as a tall old man, prodigiously strong, clean-shaven except for a long white moustache. His eyebrows are bushy, virtually a single brow, and he has “peculiarly sharp” teeth and notably red lips. Dracula is thin-cheeked but with a broad, strong chin, and the tops of his ears are extremely pointed. Harker’s overall impression of Dracula’s face is one of extraordinary pallor. He describes Dracula’s hands as coarse and broad, with squat fingers, hairy palms, and long, fine nails cut to sharp points. He also observes that Dracula has foul breath. Not handsome at all.

Your statement regarding Dracula makes me think that you base his appearance based on the movies and that you, in fact, haven't read the original Dracula novel by Bram Stoker.

Secondly, vampires ARE mythological figures, but based on that mythology, we do have a basic description of what a vampire is. According to you, we can have a giant banana with wings and call it a dragon simply because "it's all make belief". But you know what? It is still retarded.
